Certified Forage Testing Laboratories Laboratory analyses are important for the evaluation of nutritive value in forages. Hay growers and livestock owners are encouraged to use forage testing as a management tool to improve forage production practices and feed efficiency. But how do you know which laboratories provide accurate and reliable results? The National Forage Testing Association (NFTA) was founded in 1984 not only to address this question but to also improve the accuracy of forage testing among laboratories. The mission of the NFTA is to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of laboratory analyses that are important for the evaluation of nutritive value in forages. Accuracy can only be determined by comparing results to a reference value that can be defined unambiguously. The NFTA uses a certification testing (check sample) program to provide an unbiased assessment of the accuracy and reproducibility among participating laboratories. Proficiency is measured on check sample results of dry matter, crude protein, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber. NFTA is a joint effort of the American Forage and Grassland Council (AFAC), the National Hay Association (NHA), and forage testing laboratories. It is governed by a 12-member board of directors. Six directors represent laboratories, three represent AFGC, and three represent NHA.

  • REFERENCES The current agricultural paradigm in the U.S. is heavily biased towards the production and marketing of crops as commodities. This paradigm is kept in place by grain handling and marketing infrastructure, as well as government farm programs, designed for crops as commodities. Sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) and maize ( Zea mays L.) grown for grain certainly fit into this current paradigm. A new approach to agricultural production and marketing, identity preserved products, is gaining in importance. This is made possible through new technologies and markets demanding products designed specifically for their needs. Examples of investment in identity preserved products include Pioneer Hi-Bred's new research facility for grain quality (Johnson 1995), DuPont's current emphasis on value-added maize (Freiberg 1994), and Iowa State University's value-added grain marketing program (Wrage 1995). However, marketing strategies for such new grain products must be outside the current norm of sale to a local elevator and resale of a bulk commodity to grain consumers. Sorghum and maize grown for forage are already outside of the current marketing structure for grain crops. They are typically grown, stored, and fed on the same farm. Management decisions including choice of hybrids can be based on end use. As such, it could be argued that the current paradigm for production and utilization of forages in the United States, especially annual forages, is very favorable for the development and marketing of identity preserved hybrids and varieties designed for specific end users.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Bull feeding on grass Forage is the plant material (mainly plant leaves and stems ) eaten by grazing animals. Historically the term forage has meant fodder consisting solely of plant material. In a contemporary sense, it refers to pasture hay silage crop residue , and immature cereal crops. Since it is generally considered to be high in fiber, cereal crop grains (such as shelled corn) are not normally regarded as forage.

edit Animals that make use of forage
Monogastrates (Ex. swine) make little use of the nutritional value of forage because their digestive tracts are not designed to break down fiber. For these animals it mainly serves as roughage to insure gut health and regular bowel movement. In ruminants (Ex. cattle) and hind-gut fermenters (Ex. horses), the microorganisms in their digestive tracts break down fiber, so forages serve as their main energy source.

    Finally! Finally...
Yes, that is what Max wore to his birthday party last Saturday in the park here in town. What's wrong with this picture? It was about 56 degrees F. What's right with this picture is that he's wearing his favorite pants - his "rock star" pants in a lovely snakeskin stretch velour. Nice, eh?
He and Annie have finally found some songs that they won't insist be turned off. We're singing together to MY music again.
    ...ahhh summer!
So, how much to we love Bill Callahan? I've got "A River Ain't Too Much To Love" from back in his days as Smog, but his Woke on a Whaleheart record from this year makes me really happy. And we all sang Footprints over and over and over in the car on the way home from family camp. The "dog walkin' dog" part has got to capture any little. Diamond Dancer is a good one too. Max actually listens to the whole record. Did you know Bill Callahan and Joanna Newsome are two? You probably did, but I didn't. For the doctors office magazine readers among us....

We've been listening to this one for ages. It's (sadly) my only Cafe Tacuba record, and the littles ask for "the Spanish song" all the time. It's hyper and fun - a folk song about coffee and berries and other delishes raining down in the fields. Cafe Tacuba does a suped up version in a beautiful huapango (I think?) Mariachi style. Oh, how I love them and this song. It's off their old-oldie-old-old Avalancha de Exitos record of cover songs from 1996. I don't guess most of us Norte Americanos living more than 100 miles from the border know the originals, so you'll probably dig this, even though they're covers. And if you do know the originals, these are still super rad, rocking versions, so check it anyway.
