Entomology is the study of Insects it also includes their cousins with jointed legs like spiders, mites, Collembola that are not insects but closely resemble them.
In agriculture that is where most of us know the insect better. Yes, the weevils in our granary, the army worm in our maize garden. In vegetable garden we find a diverse number of caterpillars damaging our vegetables. All the caterpillars you encounter are either young moth or butterflies.
This area that looks at insects of agriculture importance is referred to as Agriculture entomology.
Malawi needs not to ignore entomology especially being in the tropics where there area a lot insects.
Forensic entomology:
In an interesting recent case the absence of insects in a decomposing body, in a seemingly straightforward death scene, led to a killer's confession. In the murder room there was an open window when the body was found, the investigators’ first assumption was that the murderer had forced his way into the room through the window. It was the department’s forensic entomologist who pointed out that you couldn’t have a decomposing body without flies. This changed the whole course of the investigation. It was later discovered that the killer had a key, and had returned to "set the stage" by opening the window just prior to feigning discovery of the corpse. The insects thus had insufficient time to colonize the body because the window had been closed ever since the murder took place to the time of the false discovery. When confronted by this biological reality as pointed out by the forensic entomologist, the killer confessed.

"For example, when a cadaver is found six months after death, we can pinpoint the date of death to the week. In other words, we can narrow it down to within a day per month of the corpse's age", says Lt. Emmanuel Gaudry, (first on the right) and his team. © Franco Zecchin
Given the chronological precision in which the various insect species come to colonize the corpse, like these kinds of Coleoptera, forensic investigators can ascertain the date of death with incredible accuracy. © Franco Zecchin

It requires a meticulous analysis to identify the insects sampled at the crime scene since there can be thousands of species within the same insect family like in the case of this fly magnified on the TV monitor at the IRCGN lab near Paris.

FORENSIC ENTOMOLOGY
What is Forensic Entomology? Forensic entomology is the application of the stdy of insects (and their arthropod counterparts) to the medico/legal system.
Insects can be used to determine elapsed time since death (also known as Post Mortem Interval or PMI), but they can also
be used to determine if a body has been moved from one location to another, tell whether or not a body has been buried, and
give an approximate time of year of when a person died. Entomologists have also been used in narcotics case to determine the
country of origin of some drugs.
How do I become a Forensic Entomologist?
to apply it to police investigations when necessary.
In the United States, you may also become a member of the American Board of Forensic Entomology (ABFE). You must have a PhD in entomology
and appropriate experience as well.
Below are links to university programs that you can take in order to study entomology, as well as entomology links that I have found on Google. This list is by no means exhaustive, but hopefully it helps you find what you are looking for.

Request Classroom Resources Site Map April 2007 Genetics and Forensic Entomology Written by Jay Fitzsimmons How do you figure out how old a maggot is? Well, you need to know a few basic things first: What species of fly the maggot is (maggots are fly larvae). What kind of weather (especially temperature) has the body been in lately (the environment influences how fast maggots grow). How long the maggot is, as maggots get longer with age. Once you have the basic info, you compare it to previous research. For example, if you find a maggot from a body is the species Calliphora vicina , and the body has been indoors at 21 o C, and the maggot is 6 mm long, then previous research suggests the maggot is at least 2 days old. Therefore, the person has likely been dead for at least two days. So, how do you find out what species of fly a maggot is?

fo-ren-sic: involving the application of scientific knowledge to legal matters. —Webster's New World Dictionary Forensic Entomology We live in a world populated by bacteria and insects. Although it seems that we spend a lot of effort in fighting them, they provide a useful service as natural rubbish recyclers. Think of that dark brown leaf mould or compost that you find in rainforests. Through decay all the chemicals used by living things are able to be re-used. Forensic pathologists and entomologists specialise in studying the rates of decay of human remains. By understanding the time and sequence of various stages as bacteria and insects attack the body, they can usually make an accurate estimate of the time since death. This period is called the post-mortem interval (PMI). In addition, many different species of insect attack a corpse at different stages of decay and even prefer different tissue types (such as a beetle which attacks bones). One species, the cheese skipper larva ( Piophila casei ), is found in dead creatures only after about 2 months has passed. Since some insect species are only found in certain geographical regions, climates or locations (eg swamp or desert), the police can work out if the body has been moved from another location.

This breakdown produces gasses that escape through the natural orifices. These gasses attract certain kinds of insects that feed on decomposing tissues. The scent of blood from open wounds also attracts these creatures, and they sometimes arrive within minutes of death. TOP
As the body decomposes it releases a progressive series of chemical indicators, and each attracts a different species of insects. The first to arrive at the death scene are usually blowflies (family Calliphoridae ). Pregnant female blowflies lay their eggs in soft, moist tissues such as those around natural openings and exposed wounds, since the larvae that hatch from the eggs are unable to penetrate healthy adult skin.
