Introduction, Mission and Goals
The New York State Police Forensic Science Laboratory System provides all criminal justice agencies in New York State with state-of-the-art forensic analytical and investigative capabilities and expert testimony related to the investigation and resolution of criminal matters. Services are provided by expert personnel at the State Police Headquarters Laboratory in the Forensic Investigation Center, in Albany, or at the system's three Regional Laboratories: Newburgh, Port Crane and Olean. With one call to any one of these laboratories, law enforcement agencies, district attorneys and courts can access a full range of crime laboratory services, investigative assistance, forensic consultants, computerized data bases and technical investigation specialists who will assist them with criminal investigations and evidence evaluation. The New York State Police Laboratory System is accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors - Lab Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB). The ASCLD/LAB inspects crime laboratories internationally, and its accreditation holds for a five-year period. To be so awarded, laboratories must demonstrate that their management, operations, personnel procedures, equipment, physical plant and health and safety procedures have met, and will continue to meet, the established standards set forth by ASCLD/LAB.

7. Forensic Science
forensic science. The word Forensic comes from the Latin forensus, meaning of the forum.1 In ancient Rome, the forum was where lawmaking debates were held,
forensic science
The purpose of crime scene investigation is to help establish what happened at the crime and to identify the responsible person or people. Carefully documenting the situation at a crime scene and recognizing all-important physical evidence do this. The ability to recognize and properly collect physical evidence is often times vital to both solving and prosecuting violent crimes. It is no exaggeration to say that in the majority of cases, the law enforcement officer who protects and searches a crime scene plays a significant role in determining whether physical evidence will be used in solving or prosecuting violent crimes. Finally, with gathering evidence at crime scenes, an investigator must make sure he not only labels the evidence, but also makes a correct description on all sketches and diagrams. Evidence should not be handled a great deal after recovery and should be kept down to as few people as possible. Investigators must continuously check paperwork, packaging notations, and other recording of information for possible conflict or errors, which may cause confusion or problems at a later time in court. Once evidence is gathered it must be sent to a laboratory for processing and further investigation. When items are to be delivered the method usually depends on how far away the laboratory is from the crime scene. In most cases, a state or local laboratory is within a few hours and delivery can be made by personal delivery. However, in some cases when items must be shipped to F.B.I. headquarters in Washington D.C., personal delivery is usually out of the question. When an item needs to be shipped via mail, it should be packaged in a way not to damage it. Postal regulations do forbid such things as ammunition or explosives from being send through the mail. Each item when shipped should be logged and sent with a checklist in order to make sure everything shipped is accounted for. An in depth report should also be sent of the crime, notes, and why the items were sent and what should be looked for.

Home Forensic Science Automated Fingerprint Identification System The goals of this course are twofold: to have the student understand the operations of an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS); and to understand opportunities to improve the cause of justice using the power of AFIS systems. Students will be taught the key elements of AFIS systems, actions and data that can affect outcome, and opportunities to make more identifications. Average of 8 Weeks to Complete Full Description The Basics of Biological Evidence Biological evidence is valuable evidence in criminal investigations. It can be relatively easy to identify and collect once the proper methods of detection, identification, and collection are understood. This course will be an introduction to the concepts encompassing biological evidence. Average of 6-8 Weeks to Complete Full Description Ethics in Forensic Science This course has been developed in response to the lack of formal ethics education specific to forensic science. While this course includes many "basics," it also relates those ideas to the forensic science profession. Average of 8 Weeks to Complete Full Description Forensic Mass Spectrometry Mass spectrometry is used in nearly all branches of science and is one of the best analytical techniques used today. This course has been developed as an orientation and overview of how the mass spectrometer works, how mass spectrometry is used in forensic science, and how to interpret mass spectra.

Forensic Science
Forensic Science focuses on problem solving, with special emphasis placed on the synthesis of information gathered through experimentation and forensic research methodologies, to propose theories and develop evidence-based conclusions. Students will learn about crime scene analysis and will used technology in developing their understanding of forensic science.
Students will be given access to current forensic science equipment such as DNA electrophoresis. Students will write reports that record their results, conclusions and analyses of case studies and investigations they conduct.
Syllabus Pre-Requisites: Regents Biology, Chemistry. Students may take this course concurrently with Physics (see Restrictions below).
