This may be in relation to a crime or to a civil action. But besides its relevance to the underlying legal system, more generally forensics encompasses the accepted scholarly or scientific methodology and norms under which the facts regarding an event, or an artifact, or some other physical item (such as a corpse, or cadaver, for example) are to the broader notion of

Forensic Science is the application of science to matters of law. As our knowledge and technical expertise in science increase, so does the complexity and importance of the science presented to the courts in the legal system.
Forensic science covers a broad range, from the statistical evaluation of glass evidence to the development of new molecules to aid in the visualisation of fingerprint residues. Some past and possible future research areas are:
    Field Science
    Physical Evidence
    Forensic Biology
    Illicit Drugs
    Environmental Forensic Science
    Undergraduate Forensic Science
We do not prescribe undergraduate course to be taken as preparation for the Forensic Science programme, except to make a strong recommendation that students take at least one university-level chemistry course. We have had successful students with majors in anthropology, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, geology, medical laboratory science, pharmacology, and zoology. However, certain undergraduate courses are required for forensic science specialisations:

The Problem with “CSI” and Crime Fiction on TV and in the Movies
It’s a familiar scene on TV or in the movies:
      • A forensic team races up in a fancy car/van. Crime scene technicians jump out and process the scene. The actors take the evidence back to the lab. They identify trace evidence and match it to suspect and motive. When something is “fishy”, they re-examine evidence, and find the critical missing piece.
The actors interview the suspects, show them the evidence, and collect their confessions. They wrap up the entire crime in an hour (or maybe a 2 part cliffhanger plot).
Cool? Very Cool! Accurate to the real world? No way! The movies and TV shows are famous for blurring the lines between criminal justice/law enforcement activities and the scientific analysis to characterize the evidence collected at the scene of the crime. These are distinct and separate aspects to the legal system.
The Real World of Forensic Science
Crime scene technicians collect and log evidence, but rarely analyze it. All materials are usually turned over to the forensic specialists for analysis. Crime scene technicians are often (but not always) police officers, and rarely have extensive scientific training in smaller communities, although this trend might change in the future. The pay isn’t glamorous and the hours are long.

Give to Oswego Forensic Science Departments by College Interdisciplinary Programs Minor Requirements General Education ... forensic science Forensic Science The minor in Forensic Science, developed jointly by the Chemistry and Public Justice Departments. The program is designed to strengthen the student's scientific background while, at the same time, giving expertise in the application of science to law. The program consists of 10 semester hours of chemistry, including two specialized chemistry courses (CHE 305 and CHE 405) and 9 semester hours of Public Justice courses. Chemistry 305, Criminalistic Chemistry, is a course designed to survey the various techniques used in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of physical evidence arising from a crime or suspicious incident. Criminalistic Chemistry has a prerequisite of 3 semester hours of college chemistry. It is strongly recommended that any Public Justice student interested in Criminalistic Chemistry take the General Education science course Chemistry 101, Survey of Chemistry, or its equivalent, to fulfill the prerequisite. The second course, Chemistry 405, Forensic Science, is an in-depth study of the methods and techniques used in the analysis of physical evidence in the crime lab. The course will give students the opportunity to actually analyze physical evidence in the crime laboratory. The prerequisites for Forensic Science are CHE 305 and one semester hour of chemistry lab (CHE 101L is recommended).

Information for New Students You will need some academic advising as you prepare to register for the fall semester. Dr. Gaensslen, the program DGS will be your academic advisor, and you can e-mail or call him with any questions or issues concerning classes and/or registration. A lot of information is provided here for you, and you may not need to contact the DGS. After you understand what courses you should be registering for in Fall, you can register for classes. Sometime after you receive your official admission letter from the Office of Admissions and Records you will receive, usually via email, information on when you may register and instructions, if not included with your admission letter. Registration, including changes to any existing registration, begins a number of months before the term and continues through the first official ten days of the term. During the registration period, all registration activity is done by the student using Student Self-Service, which may be accessed from UIC Web For Student . When attempting to register, if you receive an error message directly pertaining to the class or section you are requesting, consult with the department offering the course as an override may need to be input into the system to allow you to continue to register. Once the override has been added you still have to register for the course in Student Self-Service. If you receive an error message that you do not understand, consult the Registration Help Line at (312) 996-8600.

So, you want to be a forensic scientist? Forensic science is the application of science to law. Any science can be applied into a legal situation, but some of the commonest forensic sciences include forensic biology, forensic chemistry, and forensic toxicology. In order to be a forensic scientist you must first be a scientist. You must have a strong grounding in the science you are interested in, before you can apply that science into a legal setting and become a forensic scientist. Although on television we see supposed ‘forensic scientists’ doing a multitude of jobs from crime scene analysis to shooting the bad guy, forensic science in real life is quite different. There are several career option s in the general area of forensic science. CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATORS to blood spatter pattern analysis (only a select few). The Ident team handles the crime scenes and is not responsible for other aspects of the investigation. Their duty is to the scene and the analysis of some of the evidence. Other police officers are involved in such things as interviewing suspects and following up leads. The Ident team will correctly collect the evidence, and submit it to the forensic scientists at the lab, who will then perform the analyses and submit reports to the Investigating Officers. The Ident officer however, is responsible for the actual individualization of fingerprints and the analysis of blood spatter pattern. Quality control is extremely important in Ident so NO mistakes are allowed. If an Ident officer makes an incorrect individualization of a fingerprint and wrongly identifies a person, then they are immediately removed from the Ident section. This can occur from their first training exercise to the last print they individualize before they retire. If they make a mistake, they are out of the section. Therefore, every Ident specialist can state in court, that they have NEVER mis-identified anyone.
