Forensic Science
The extensive use of biological evidence to identify victims and offenders has had a significant bearing, in recent years, on the course of law enforcement investigations, criminal court proceedings, and victim service provider issues. DNA evidence arguably has become the most well-known type of forensic evidence, probably because it can be uniquely identifying and because it is the genetic blueprint of the human body. For these reasons, DNA evidence has become a highly influential piece of the crime puzzle ( The Future of Forensic DNA Testing: Predictions of the Research and Development Working Group Although DNA cannot determine a motive for a crime, it can be an important part of any law enforcement investigation, particularly one in search of an all-important lead. For example, DNA evidence may place a particular individual at a crime scene ( What Every Law Enforcement Officer Should Know About DNA Evidence , 1999). Forensic scientists also use DNA evidence to identify human remains, determine paternity, and study human populations and medical diseases.

Forensic science investigations employ many of the same principles and techniques applied by clinical laboratory scientists. Thus, earning a Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) is excellent preparation for a career as a Forensic Scientist. Eligibility for employment as a forensic scientist requires the addition of two extra courses in biology in addition to the already required CLS curriculum: BIOS 205 (4), Organismal Diversity, and BIOS 308 (5), Genetics. Students are advised to take these additional courses prior to enrolling in 300- or 400-level course in clinical laboratory sciences. Forensic Scientists, like Clinical Laboratory Scientists, work in sophisticated laboratories with state-of-the-art biomedical and other scientific instrumentation. While Clinical Laboratory Scientists focus on promoting wellness and discovery and monitoring of disease through many analytical tests, Forensic Scientists examine, identify, evaluate and objectively describe evidence from crimes. Clinical Laboratory Science is patient-centered while Forensic Science is crime or case-centered. Careers as a Forensic Scientist with the Illinois State Police begin with an application process and test of the applicant's scientific knowledge and capabilities for further training. Other screening procedures are also conducted. If hired, the Forensic Scientist Trainee completes a comprehensive training program which varies in length according to the forensic discipline. The following table lists the disciplines with brief descriptions and the length of current training programs. Forensic Scientist Trainees are paid employees during the training programs. Starting salaries for a Forensic Scientist Trainee in 2001 ranged from $2485 to $3522 per month.

Occupational Description and Outlook
Science technicians use the principles and theories of science and mathematics to solve problems in research and development and to help invent and improve products and processes. However, their jobs are more practically oriented than those of scientists. Technicians set up, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments, monitor experiments, make observations, calculate and record results, and often develop conclusions. They must keep detailed logs of all of their work-related activities. Those who work in production monitor manufacturing processes and may be involved in ensuring quality by testing products for proper proportions of ingredients, for purity, or for strength and durability.

What is forensic science?
Forensic science simply means that scientific procedures are being applied to legal problems. Virtually all fields of science touch upon this discipline.
Proof of criminal charges
Not long ago, proof of criminal charges depended mainly on eyewitnesses and other subjective means. With scientific advances, objective evidence has taken on a greater role in criminal trials. Governments rely increasingly on science to help enforce a growing number of regulations. Because science is now used routinely in litigation, various groups, including lawyers, judges, enforcement officials, and the public, need to know what forensic science can - and cannot - do. Forensic science is used to enforce laws and government regulations and statutes, to resolve disputes, to assess blame and establish responsibility, and to enhance public safety. Forensic science involves the collection of information about the physical characteristics, chemical composition and occurrence of materials of forensic interest. It looks at the scientific association between such samples, based on their origins, manufacture, packaging and distribution characteristics.
Chemical fingerprinting
Every time we enter or leave a room we potentially leave behind evidence that we were there. Examples are biological samples such as hair, blood, saliva, urine, or seminal fluid, and other physical evidence such as fibres, or particulate matter including glass fragments and paint chips. Fingerprints may also be left behind.

MEMORANDUM REVIEWING STANDARDS FOR FORENSIC HANDWRITING ANALYSIS
The basis of the recognition of His Holiness the Seventeenth Karmapa is the sacred prediction letter (the "Prediction Letter") written by His Holiness Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the Sixteenth Gyalwang Karmapa, which described Urgyen Drodul Trinley Dorje as the H.H. the XVIth Karmapa's reincarnation. In the Karmapa Papers , the writers claim that only "a forensic test of the original letter could definitely prove whether the handwriting on the [prediction] letter is that of H.H. the 16th Karmapa or not." (p. 72) This statement is erroneous; forensic examination is subject to limitations which preclude reliable forensic analysis of the Prediction Letter. Forensic analysis is used in litigation, when two parties disagree with each other over the genuineness of a written document and ask a court of law to decide whether the document is forged or not. Published treatises which discuss the use of forensic analysis and reported cases showing disagreements among experts demonstrate that forensic examination of the Prediction Letter will not provide any certainty regarding its authenticity. According to the principles of forensic science, analysis of the handwriting in the Prediction Letter will be unreliable because the writing is in a little-known language and no comparable samples are available

Forensic Science is the application of scientific knowledge to solve legal problems.
This can be anything from a common burglary through environmental protection to international arms control. In our increasingly regulated world science is becoming more and more intricately involved with civil and criminal law.
While it is by no means exclusively connected to criminal cases, it is the collection, examination and presentation of scientific evidence to solve crimes that is most familiar to the public as "forensic science". Using the very latest in technology, forensic scientists convert the clues collected from a crime scene into evidence admissible in a court of law.

While forensic science is used in civil and criminal cases, this course will focus on criminal investigation. Unsurprisingly, forensic science comprises several disparate fields of study. This course will cover a wide range of topics including jurisprudence, medicine, taphonomy, criminalistics, engineering, digital forensics and behavioral science. This course aims to provide an understanding of the fundamentals of forensic science through the study of each of these fields. Each student should finish this class with an understanding of the history and definition of forensic science, legal framework in which forensic science in the USA is conducted, commonly applied and recently developed applications, potential forms of evidence and their analysis, presentation of facts and opinion in a court of law.

New Mexico State’s new forensic science minor popular with a variety of students
In less than a year, forensic science has become New Mexico State University’s second most popular minor in the College of Arts and Sciences. “There is a lot of student interest in the phenomenon of applying science and technology to criminal law,” said Peter Gregware, criminal justice department head. “When trying to make legal decisions, there is always some level of uncertainty and people love to have science to help them make that leap.” Forensic science involves the application of the principles and techniques of scientific analysis to a legal context. Forensic scientists study phenomena such as physical evidence to resolve issues involving criminal investigation, environmental pollution and similar social problems. The minor, second only to Spanish as a minor, started in February as part of the criminal justice department, but also involves courses from anthropology, biology, chemistry and psychology. Gregware said television shows and even the news media have glamorized the field of forensic science, but he thinks the interest in the new minor is part of a larger social phenomenon.
