Problems: Forest Fires
Each year, fires burn millions of hectares of forest worldwide
The resulting loss and degradation of forested land is roughly equal to that caused by destructive logging and conversion to agriculture combined, and has wide-reaching consequences on biodiversity, health and the economy, among others.
Fires good and bad Fire is sometimes essential for forest regeneration, or provides tangible benefits for local communities. In other cases it destroys forests and has dire social and economic consequences. Forest fires are a natural part of ecosystems in many, but not all, forest types: in boreal and dry tropical forests for example they are a frequent and expected feature, while in tropical moist forests they would naturally be absent or at least rare enough to play a negligible role in ecology. Fires become a problem when they burn in the wrong places, or in the right places but at the wrong frequency or the wrong temperatures. Fires in forests that burn under natural circumstances become a problem when those forests are used for a particular purpose, such as settlement or timber production. Pervasive human influence Globally, most forest fires are probably now directly or indirectly influenced by humans. But in many areas that are hot and dry for part of each year, where frequent fires would be expected, human influence has now become so pervasive that most fires are 'unnatural'.

Dolev and forest fires:
Forests surround Dolev  (Ancient Olive, Fig, Carob, and Pine trees).
Part of these are official nature reserves.
BUT our Palestinian neighbors have a "habit":  they like to set forest fires.
In the past six years we have had forest fires.
The last one: Jun 27 2004
On October 2000 we had two fires: 4.10.00 and 12.10.00.  That fire was stopped mere 150 meters from Dolev's houses.   An IDF tracker identified tracks of 2 Palestinians and a donkey, leading to the nearby vilage of Ein-Arik
Though we filed a complaint at the police station, nothing was done. Back to Dolev's Volunteer fire brigade to: Fire Safety Power-Point Presentations A risky buisness...
Putting out the fires is a difficult mission. Dolev's forests are on very steep slopes, there is no road to give access for the fire truck and there are no hydrants nearby. We have to lay very long fire hoses, climbing dangerus slopes.
There is the SECURITY aspect too. Since the fires are due to torching by our nighbours, we have to be careful of the other FIRE (shooting) too...

In fact, in 2002, forest fires probably emitted nearly as much dioxin to the environment as did all other Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-quantified sources combined . Dioxin emissions from industrial and commercial sources have declined steadily over the past several decades. As emissions from these sources are further curtailed through regulation and technology, forest fires should continue to be viewed as a major source of dioxins to the environment. A recently published study by Gullett and Touati (2003) demonstrates that dioxin emissions from forest fires originate predominantly from biomass ii combustion, and not simply from the vaporization of dioxin compounds bound to vegetation. Additionally, the researchers found that the

LiveScience.com Thu Jul 6, 2006 A recent increase in wildfire activity has been correlated with rising seasonal temperatures and the earlier arrival of spring, a new study concludes. Looking at a database of 1,166 forest wildfires from 1970 to 2003 in the western United States, researchers compared the number and potency of wildfires to spring and summer temperatures and the timing of snowmelts. Wildfire season and potency increased "suddenly and dramatically" in the late 1980's, the scientists say. "The increase in large wildfires appears to be another part of a chain of reactions to climate warming," said study co-author Dan Cayan, director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Climate Research Division. "The recent ramp-up is likely, in part, caused by natural fluctuations, but evidence is mounting that anthropogenic effects have been contributing to warmer winters and springs in recent decades." Fired up Cayan and colleagues noted that in the mid 1980's there was a jump of four times the average number of wildfires in the West compared with the early 1980's and 1970's. The total area burned was six-and-a-half times greater in the mid 1980's than the earlier years examined. [Graphic: National Acres Burned]

It's a good photo but not from BC. It's a photo of some of the devastation caused by the massive fires in Montana and Colorado last year. The most frightening photo I've seen of the Kelowna fires was on the front page of the Globe and Mail here a week or so ago when about 244 homes in a suburb of Kelowna were burned to the ground. It's hard to imagine that many homes going in one blaze.
