By George Fullerton Gerry Cormier, information services manager with FPL. Top, a new Air Tractor 802 with a TBM Avenger in the background. W hat is the optimum service life for forestry equipment and at what point do you make the trade up to new equipment? The service life, of course, depends on the engineering and quality control that went into manufacturing the equipment and the maintenance and operating conditions through its life. In the forest industry, some high tech equipment can have a service life of just a few years before companies want to trade it in for new iron that promises performance and reliability. Forest Protection Limited (FPL) of Fredericton, New Brunswick had an impressive 30 years of service on their fleet of water bombers—which they purchased used in the early 1970s—before they figured it was time to update their equipment. Their fleet of TBM Avengers was originally designed to fly combat missions from aircraft carriers in World War II. They had power and agility that won them a reputation as heavy haulers and a quick response time that helped New Brunswick develop an enviable fire fighting reputation. However, 30 years of service had thinned out the spare parts availability and service and maintenance schedules had become more and more challenging. Additionally, it was proving difficult to incorporate new technologies into the old aircraft.

"The majority of fires occur in Africa. Large swathes of savannah grasslands are cleared every year, up to seven times burnt in the period 2000-2007 (see Figure 1). The system is sustainable because the grass regenerates very quickly during the wet season. From a carbon perspective, there is a net balance due to the regenerating vegetation acting as a carbon sink. Fires in forests are more important as the affected area becomes a carbon source for a number of years. "The forest fires last summer... (Science Daily)

The Mount Lebanon region of Lebanon is a key area for conservation efforts to save Mediterranean forests, and the Lebanese cedar ( Cedrus libani ) in particular. WWF has identified the Al-Shouf Cedar Reserve, in the northern part of Mount Lebanon, as a biodiversity hotspot in the Mediterranean.

The work of AFDC focuses on: Through these different approaches, AFDC, WWF, and other partners have achieved a number of successes. Not only are fires being extinguished more quickly by trained volunteer fire-fighters and better coordination between different fire-fighting groups, but farmers are using better practises to stop fires getting out of control in the first place. In addition, some 250,000 trees have been planted throughout the country, and shepherds, beekeepers, and other locals are developing sustainable practises that both protect forests and provide a source of income.

Students who wanted to replant their forest
AFDC (Association for Forest Development and Conservation) is a Lebanese organization that has been working since 1993 to safeguard the country's forest from fires and contribute to better environmental management in Lebanon.
Today a well-recognized national conservation organization active in advocacy, education, and capacity building, it's hard to believe it all started with a group of university students whose original dream was only to restore their village forest after it burned to the ground. Students turned into conservationists In 1992, the forest around the small village of Ramlieh in Mount Lebanon went up in flames. Determined to do something about the tragedy, Monir Bu Ghanem, who was a 22-year-old student of business administration at the time, formed a group with four friends to replant the forest. They created AFDC as a charity, started a nursery, and began planting trees, first around Ramlieh, and then eventually throughout Lebanon.

Overland Fire - October 29, 2003 Before dawn on October 29th, high winds downed a power line at the Burlington Mine near Jamestown starting the Overland Fire. By nightfall, the fire had grown to 3,800 acres, the largest in the County in a century. About 200 local, state and U.S. Forest Service firefighters created a 200-foot perimeter around the fire, which stretched from James Canyon and Lefthand Canyon Drives to the hogback just west of U.S. 36 at the mouth of Lefthand Canyon.
