Forest Fires v. 1.0
Every year has its forest fire season. Eighty percent of wildfires are started by lightning strikes, while others are the result of arson and carelessness. The larger fires can burn through millions of acres of forestland, traveling rapidly in strong winds from treetop to treetop. In this screensaver you will see 50 amazing pictures taken by the U.S. National Park Service of numerous forest fires that raged in western states....

Forest Fires Forest fires can endanger people and wildlife, and controlling a burn is expensive, both in terms of manpower and financial cost. Yet, wildfires are a natural occurrance and serve important ecosystem functions. Forest landscapes are dynamic and change in response to variations in climate and to disturbances from natural sources, such as fires caused by lightning strikes. Forests respond to these disturbances through a natural process called succession, a recovery process that occurs in predictable stages and enables forest regeneration. Bitterroot National Forest in Montana on August 6, 2000. The 10 hottest years in the 143-year-old global temperature record have now all occurred since 1990. Recent years have also seen record drought in many parts of Canada, including British Columbia. The increase in hot, dry weather is likely the result of global climate change, and it is predicted to get worse. Deforestation has a major effect on living things, it effects biodiverstiy which is important to us medically. The forest provides us with medicines for several things we need. Researchers found that increases in large wildfire activity in the western United States over the past 25 years is strongly associated with increased spring and summer temperatures and an earlier spring snowmelt. FOREST FIRES
Improvement of the efficiency of the prevention and suppression system in Greece
Contracting Organization: NATO Science Program for Stability III, Ministry of Agriculture
Duration: 1997-99 The objective of this project was to develop decision support tools and methodologies that can be used for the prevention and suppression of forest fires. In the first phase of this project, IACM's researchers developed "Faethon”. This is a stand alone GIS system that contains information on all forest fires that occurred in Greece the last 15 years and which will be used by the Forest Service to analyze past trends, patterns of fire occurrence etc. In the second phase, GIS methodologies (visibility analysis, Arc/Info) was used to establish the optimal deployment of fire watch towers in the Chalkidiki peninsula in Northern Greece. Finally, in the third phase a decision support system that can be used for allocating fire suppression resources will be developed. The latter will utilize input data from the GIS databases and mathematical algorithms to estimate the optimal location of firetrucks.

Forest Fires?
My wife and I first visited Spetses in 1991 and have been back many times since. In 1990 the island suffered from forest fires and I am hoping that all on the island are safe and well during the current Greek heatwave. I have a friend who lives near Athens who has had to leave his apartment recently. Best wishes and I hope it rains soon!

State of Emergency in California
Raging forest fires in California destroyed 2,205 structures and approximately 427,217 acres have burned. There are currently 33,985 structures reportedly threatened. At the height of the fires, 900,000 people were evacuated, but that number continues to fall as evacuations are lifted. At least 12 people have died. [Watch Coverage]

BC Forest Fires
A Brief Primer on BC's 2003 Forest Fires
Forest Fire In the summer of 2003 British Columbia experienced a severe fire season. Tens of thousands of residents living in southern BC were displaced from their homes as forest fires ripped through wooded residential areas. The loss of homes and the destruction of thousands of hectares of forests caused many people to ask questions and search for answers. Why did this happen? Can we prevent fires of this magnitude in the future? Can we do anything differently? The severe fire season in the summer of 2003 requires a careful analysis of the disparate factors that contributed to these events. We need a thorough understanding of the history and ecology of fire management and suppression in British Columbia before we can arrive at thoughtful conclusions that will help us to protect our public forests and the people who live near and in wooded areas.

Green Groups Aided Spread of Fires-Veneman
By Christopher Doering WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration blamed environmental groups on Tuesday for contributing to raging forest fires such as the ones in Arizona and Colorado by blocking the federal government's effort to remove dangerous underbrush. Green groups have repeatedly gone to court to challenge the U.S. Forest Service's attempts to thin out forests by letting timber companies move in and cut trees. Efforts to manage forests have "been stopped by opponents in the courts," Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman told CNN television. "There will be some product that will be taken out of the forest," Veneman said, referring to timber companies. "But some of these places where (environmental groups) are complaining, there aren't even saw mills near." The Forest Service, a unit of the Agriculture Department, has been trying to rid Western lands of low underbrush that serves as fuel and aids the spread of wildfires, especially during drought. Responding to Veneman's comments, Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope said trying to blame environmentalists for forest fires was "a disturbing display of cynical politics."

Forest fires may be detected from satellites and from land-based cameras. ENVISYS proposes to automatically retrieve and integrate data from both sources in order to obtain a very reliable surveillance system. Furthermore, ENVISYS will not wait passively until a fire occurs, but will, based on remote sensing and meteorological data, give an early warning by providing maps showing the risk of forest fires. Other features of the system are tools for the assessment of the situation, support to the fire combat action and a post-assessment of the fire consequences.
Forest fire detection is based on data from the visible or thermal infrared part of the spectrum. The signature in thermal infrared is easiest to detect. The energy emitted by the fire will create high intensity compared to the surrounding areas. In the visible part of the spectrum, the smoke from the fires is most dominating.
Visual light image: The smoke from the fire is clearly visible. Thermal infrared image: The hot fire gives a strong contrast (bright spot on dark background just below the centre of the image).

I am retrieving parameters using the BIRT Viewer from a multiple select List Box. I then define the Data Set's query in the beforeOpen script (Highlight the Data Set in the Data Explore and select the Script tab). It took me a while to figure this out but in fact it works very well and is easy to do:
/* Any multi-select parameter cannot be associated with the data set the way single value parameters can. This is why
we have to use this bit of JavaScript to create the proper SQL call.
// Get the array that holds the area parameters var area = params["rp_area"].value;
// get the formatted parameter string for the "in" clause var areaQuery = formatListQueryParams(area);
// create the query
this.queryText = "select t.year,t.area,t.ownership,t.forest_fires,t.forest_insects,t.area_harvested " +
