Kim and I have fostered some 80+ children in our home since 1990. While not for everyone, it has been by far a very rewarding ministry for our whole family. We have seen 8 of those children adopted into wonderful families who cherish them. We have also seen our share of heart aches. We have nursed broken bones as well as broken hearts. I hope here to share both information that we have gathered as well as some personal stories that might prove of benefit to other parents. Evangelicals start adoption push AFPAG

What are the requirements for becoming a Happy Endings foster home? Easy! We need loving homes that will provide food, water, shelter and a safe place to stay until the animals are adopted into permanent homes. This requires the foster family to bring in their foster pet to Happy Endings during show hours when it is convenient for them. The more the animal is shown, the better chance it has to become adopted to a permanent home. Fostering an animal helps us learn even more about the particular animal. We would know if the animal has been around children, dogs, other cats, etc. That is very helpful when perspective adopters have questions about the animal. When an animal is temporarily placed in a home-like foster atmosphere, they are getting the additional attention needed instead of being primarily in a cage. If you had an animal at your house and it was just not what you expected or just was not working out

It is one of those phone calls I dread. A social worker is asking if I know any Muslim families who would be interested in caring for a foster child. This one is a nine-year-old boy described as "a Muslim boy of Middle Eastern descent." He needs long-term placement. The last call was for three siblings, Muslim children who needed temporary placement. I dread these calls. As one of the few (if not the only) current Muslim foster home in our area, I am frequently asked if I know of other families who would be interested in caring for a Muslim foster child. Sadly, the answer is most often no.
There are an estimated five hundred thousand children in the foster care system in the United States ranging in age from newborn infants to older teens. Some children are taken into state custody because of abuse or neglect by their birthparents; some enter because of an illness or the death of their parent. Some orphaned refugee children come to this country as unaccompanied minors and are placed in foster care.
Foster parents may care for a child for a short period, perhaps only overnight, or they may care for them for years. While the system varies from state to state, temporary or permanent custody of the child is held by the state or a private agency. Foster parents are responsible for the day-to-day care of the children but social workers and the courts make major decisions, sometimes with input from birthparents.

    Foster Parenting
Despite all the foster care training that I got, being a foster parent was something I was wholly unprepared for. I have always considered myself a very kind and nurturing person, and the only reason I didn't have children is because of the fact that I didn't think the human race needed more people right now. With 6 billion souls and growing, the earth's population is doing fine without my added genetic contribution. With foster parenting, I thought I could make a difference in the lives of children who are already born without bringing more into the world. I didn't realize how difficult it was and how hard foster parents had it. Don't get me wrong – being a foster parent has in many ways been extremely rewarding. Nevertheless, it didn't start out that way. Foster parents end up getting some of the most difficult children that there are. You see, many of the foster care kids have been shuffled around from foster home to foster home for so long that they are unable to form meaningful connections. They are so used to being abandoned that they cannot trust adults – and who can blame them? The system has failed them over and over again, so they are likely to act up as soon as they get in your house. After all, negative attention is the only attention that they can get. There is nothing like the love of an adult authority figure in their lives. It was this deplorable fact that made me think of foster parent adoption as a real possibility. I had never been motivated to adopt a child before, because I wasn't sure that I wanted the permanent commitment. I feel that parenting is a decision that should be made carefully. If you are not completely sure that you can be there for a child for 18 years, you shouldn't do it. However, once I spent some time with as a foster parent, I realized that I wanted to adopt. I loved the foster children too much to let them stay on in the system any longer.

An Assessment of Foster Parenting in Texas
Added on 09/19/2006 to Articles Directory / Family / Parenting / foster parenting The concerns given to foster parenting in Texas reflect the general concerns for parenting in Texas. Parents in Texas are careful to instill in their children a sense of respect and a willingness to extend common courtesy to others. Those are two character traits that are found in many southerners. They are character traits that are reinforced by the nature of southern hospitality.
California Foster Parenting, Education and Support

Added on 09/15/2006 to Articles Directory / Family / Parenting / foster parenting A variety of events or circumstances can force the need for foster parenting whenever those circumstances prevent the child's natural parents or legal guardians from continuing their parental role. Death, incarceration, abandonment and abhorrent lifestyles that endanger a child are four of the most common reasons a child may require foster parenting. California foster parenting requires licensing and ongoing annual education.

    What is a Foster Parent?
Foster parents are people who provide a caring temporary home environment for children unable to live with their birth families. Foster parents can be married or single; renters or homeowners; with or without children of their own; and can also work outside the home. What Kind of Children Need Foster Care?
A foster child is one whose own parents are physically or emotionally unable to provide for the child's needs. The child may have been abused, neglected or abandoned and often has experienced physical, emotional or social deprivation. Children needing foster care come from all races and range in age from birth to 18. How Do These Children Come Under the Agency's Care?
Juvenile Court places children under the custody of Children Services. In other cases the family may voluntarily seek help from the agency and ask that foster care be provided for their children until a family crisis is over. Schools, hospitals, churches, social agencies and others may refer children. The rules affecting children coming into foster care are established and monitored by state and federal governments.
