French Literature Nicholas French
Origin and Foundations of the French Language oc in the South and the Romance language of o¯l in the North. The o¯l language comprised all the varieties of speech in use to the north of an imaginary line drawn from the estuary of the Girande to the Alps, passing through Limousin, Auvergne, and Dauphiny. In the twelfth century, the speech of the Ile-de-France began to take the lead over all the others, for the very good reason that it was the speech of the royal domain. Hereafter the French language possesses its form, and can give birth to a literature.
In the Middle Ages Epic Poetry In France, as everywhere else, literature began with poetry, and that epic. For many centuries this seems to have been the form natural to the French mind; and the abundance of the output is striking proof of the breadth and power of the movement. To comprehend more clearly the great mass of epic works of this period, we distinguish three subject-matters, or three cycles: the French, or national cycle; the Breton cycle; the antique cycle. The origin of the French cycle go back to the first age of Frankish domination. The Frankish chiefs all kept their singers, who celebrated their exploits in poems of heroic inspiration. These compositions, called

Biography and Index to some of his Fables in English and French (side by side)
France Facts Previous page Click here to see the INDEX of the Fables J ean de La Fontaine (c. July 8, 1621 - April 13, 1695), French poet, was born at Château-Thierry in Champagne.
His Fables of animals and everyday life are masterworks of French literature and took their inspiration from Aesop, Horace and ancient Indian literature such as the Panchatantra:
"This is the second book of fables that I present to the public... I must acknowledge that the greatest part is inspired by Pilpay, the Indian sage." ("Je dirai par reconnaissance que j’en dois la plus grande partie à Pilpay sage indien.") — Jean de La Fontaine, Avertissement to the Second Compilation of Fables (1678). The first collection of 124 Fables Choisies had appeared March 31, 1668, wisely dedicated to "Monseigneur" the Dauphin, the six-year-old grandson of Louis XIV, and were choice in every sense: utterly correct, balanced, choice in rhyme, natural and easy, droll, witty, knowing, sage, utterly French.

Oxford University Press is one of the oldest publishing enterprises in the world, as well as one of the largest. Its imprint carries authority; its standards of book production are high, and its range of interests is wide. It is a department of the University of Oxford, although it is not subsidised by the University. It is not a company: it pays no dividend and it has no shareholders. It is committed to the dissemination of knowledge: all its surplus is devoted to publishing works that further scholarship and education, and to sustaining the research on which some of these books are based.

For literature written in French by citizens of other Francophone nations see Francophone literature During the 20th century, France has been more permissive than other countries in terms of censorship, and many important foreign language novels were originally published in France while being banned in America: Joyce 's Ulysses (published by Sylvia Beach in Paris, 1922), Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita and William S. Burroughs's Naked Lunch (both published by Olympia Press), and Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer (published by Obelisk Press). Additionally, Paris has been the home-in-exile to two American literary movements: the lost generation and the beat generation
