46. Best French Literature
Date Tue, 20 Apr 1999 224958 0500 From Keith Thompson kjt@mediaone.net Subject Re Best French Literature. Hello Greg et al,
http://abel.hive.no/trumpet/tpin/French_Literature.html
Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 22:49:58 -0500
Subject: Re: Best French Literature Hello Greg [et al], Well, I'm not willing to step out and say these are "the best", but here are my favorites: 1. Charles Chaynes - Concerto (1956)
My clear favorite, both to play and to hear. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the old Erato Maurice Andre recording that MHS had? The Eric Aubier recording is excellent, but it's just not the same. 2. Jean Francaix - Sonatine (1952)
WOW! Can I say that again? Yeah, WOW! This will most definitely be on my next recital (if indeed such an event eventually occurs). The recording to get is by Ole Edvard Antonsen. 3. Henri Tomasi - Triptyque (1957)
It's actually three of his earlier etudes set to accompaniments I guess, but I love it. The only recording of this I've heard is by Thomas Stevens. I'd like to hear another if anyone has suggestions, although I do enjoy his recording despite it being (in my opinion) a bit mechanical [as if I should be allowed to critique the man]. 4. Alfred Desenclos - Incantation, Threne et Danse (1953)

Origin and Foundations of the French Language
oc language comprised all the varieties of speech in use to the north of an imaginary line drawn from the estuary of the Girande to the Alps, passing through Limousin, Auvergne, and Dauphiny. In the twelfth century, the speech of the Ile-de-France began to take the lead over all the others, for the very good reason that it was the speech of the royal domain. Hereafter the French language possesses its form, and can give birth to a literature.
In the Middle Ages
Epic Poetry In France, as everywhere else, literature began with poetry, and that epic. For many centuries this seems to have been the form natural to the French mind; and the abundance of the output is striking proof of the breadth and power of the movement. To comprehend more clearly the great mass of epic works of this period, we distinguish three subject-matters, or three cycles: the French, or national cycle; the Breton cycle; the antique cycle. The origin of the French cycle go back to the first age of Frankish domination. The Frankish chiefs all kept their singers, who celebrated their exploits in poems of heroic inspiration. These compositions, called

French Literature by Lee
Sometimes the cliches write themselves
Bonjour Paresse, as it was titled in French, is a short diatribe against modern business culture and an imprecation to shirk and evade responsibility for work as a matter of principle. Corinne Maier, the author, narrowly escaped disciplinary action from her employers who, rather uncharitably, did not appreciate being associated with a study in atrocious management. So far, I have to admit, Hello Laziness is not a great read. It sounds like polemic that has been hastily translated. And as every francophone knows, the French language is great for weaving rhetorical flourishes that do not, when broken down and reconstituted in short anglo-saxon chunks, say very much at all. But then maybe Ms Maier is just practising as she preaches. Why write a long, in-depth study when you can make a mint out of a shallow pamphlet? Smart. The success of the book in France has prompted the author to begin work on a companion volume

Summary: French literature is literature written in the French language. Although the French people are of mixed origin, having Celtic and Germanic as well as Roman strains in their composition, it is the Roman that has counted most. The French language itself may be regarded as a modern form of Latin. The Latin genius, as it has often been called, has seemed to hover over the development of the French culture and determine its destinies. It has bestowed upon the French people their love of order, cla ... read the full French literature article
