    • Are We Really Depriving Our Kids? - One of the main questions I get asked about frugal living is "won't I be depriving my children if I live the frugal life?" Maybe I can answer that question with a question.
    • Being Frugal Without Being Cheap - Have you ever noticed how frugality is often confused with being cheap? Isn’t it a shame that those who choose to live frugally are sometimes accused of being selfish and stingy?
    • eBay vs. Garage Sales - I've never been much of a believer in getting rich having a garage sale. I've had a few of them but the cash I made was never even close to paying for my time and effort.
    • Go Ahead and Waste It - It Was Free - Go ahead and waste it; it was free! Have you ever heard that? I wonder if that comment has the same effect on you that it has on me. Actually, it's more the mentality behind the words that has the same effect on me as fingernails down a chalkboard.
    • Simple Living in a Materialistic World - As I sat there folding clothes, I marveled at how little we really needed to be happy. It was quite enough to just be together as we did our work. Many of the gifts my kids received for Christmas were already put away. As often happens, there was a brief flurry of excitement when the gifts were first discovered. Shortly after, the thrill of ownership faded away. And while my kids may be too young to understand it, I’d like them to know that possessions don’t really make them happy.

Related Forums Surviving Family Financial Hardship: My Story by Rachel Paxton Description: How my family lived through financial hardships and taught valuable lessons about money to our daughter. Sponsored links: My daughter is 18 years old this year, older than I was when she was born. For years we lived on a very low income and barely made ends meet. She watched me work my way through college, studying hard, often working more than one job to make ends meet. If you were to ask her now if we had any money when she was young she would tell you she didn't really know. She never went to bed hungry and always had clean clothes to wear. She always had toys to play with and mom was always there for her when she needed her. That is what she remembers. My daughter is now applying for college herself, and wanted me to read her college application. She had to write about herself and her life, her relationships, etc. I was very surprised to read what she thought about her childhood. We have lived through a lot of tough times and there are a lot of negative stories she could tell. What she described is how thankful she was for the hardships she has endured and how she has become a strong woman because of her life experiences. She credits me for her drive and determination. She attributes her money management skills to my example.

Great Gifts for the Frugal Budget
Gift season is upon us. In the last week, I've received two graduation notices, one graduation party invitation, and one baby shower invitation. Add bridal showers, weddings and the regular assortment of birthdays and even a generous gift budget is stretched. The Simple Dollar had a great post, last week, about how to give meaningful and personal gifts without overspending. Here are their top ideas: Handmade cards: Gift cards and money are a popular and easy gift, but very impersonal. Instead of grabbing a pre-written (and, admit it, cheesy) card, try writing your own note on a blank card. If you are particularly crafty, create a card with stamping, ribbon or a calligraphied poem. Free babysitting: An excellent gift idea for any baby shower. Baby outfits are a dime a dozen, but a night out with your spouse is priceless! Homemade care packages: I fondly remember opening my college mailbox and smelling my mom's cookies. A gift certificate/coupon for several care packages makes a lovely graduation gift.
