The discourse of futurism is not an old discourse. In the form of what we call modern futurism today, this discourse has been formulated after World War II by the German-born futurist Ossip K. Flechtheim in the U.S. and the French futurist Bertrand de Jouvenel . Prior to this date, IMO, futurism did not exist as a separate discourse and it was part of the discourse of progress in the Western philosophy. The discourse of progress has been around at least since Aristotle in the Western Philosophy, and as I have noted it before in other articles , the terms humanity and progress have been formed at the same time around the second century AD. In here, my main focus is on the futurism in particular and not progressive thought in general. The primitive formation of the Industrial Society gave rise to releasing great potentials to build the human society. Thus prediction of the future structure of society became a very important criteria of progressiveness; and many sociologists started studying the structures of the future society.

In contrast to Marinetti's circle, Russian Futurism was a literary rather than artistic movement. Although many leading poets (Mayakovsky, Burlyuk) dabbled in painting, their interests were primarily literary. On the other hand, such well-established artists as Mikhail Larionov, Natalia Goncharova, and Kazimir Malevich found inspiration in the refreshing imagery of Futurist poems and experimented with versification themselves. The poets and painters attempted to collaborate on such innovative productions as the Futurist opera Victory Over the Sun, with texts by Kruchenykh and sets contributed by Malevich. Source: en.wikipedia.org Marinetti, the poet-animator of all Futurism, was the first to realize noise scores, preceding by many years Pierre Schaeffer's Concrete Music and Cage's compositions and anticipating the use of wireless sets. His Cinque sintesi per il teatro radiofonico (Five Syntheses for the Radjophonic Theater), is an application of the theories expressed in the "Radia" manifesto, and is composed of verbal scores which indicate the types and durations of sounds. Noises are assembled into a collage in which silence is an integral part. One of these syntheses includes a silence of three mil utes-a completely new concept: a theater for radio, to be performed in a manner which suggests the existence of imagined space-this, 20 years before Cage's 4'33".

In Russia, the Futurist impulse combined with Kandinsky's "abstract expressionism" to inspire Futurist, Cubo-Futurist, and Suprematist works of art. In addition to Malevich and Tatlin, the work of Gustav Klutsis , Liubov Popova and Alexander Rodchenko is of special interest to our studies in visual culture. These styles share much with what I have identified as Constructivism In addition to the files below, take a look at these files in order to gauge the practical implications and the reception of accorded to Cubism and Futurism in Russia.

Futurism’s past is littered with faulty forecasts
From Picturephones to Smell-o-vision, bold predictions can be perilous

Jetpacks never got off the ground for a few very simple reasons: “They consume fuel really fast; the fuel is expensive; it's volatile; they shoot superheated steam, and they're deafeningly loud,” said Dan Wilson, editor to Popular Mechanics magazine and author of “Where’s My Jetpack?”
John W. Schoen Senior Producer MSNBC John W. Schoen Senior Producer Profile document.write('') E-mail document.write(''); To make a bold prediction about the future, you have to think outside the box. But as the history of these predictions shows, when you try to stare too deeply into the future, it’s all too easy to end up way outside the ballpark. History, in fact, is littered with Big Ideas that went nowhere. From the paperless office to teleportation; flying cars and undersea cities, predicting the future can be a perilous business. But that hasn’t stopped people from trying. Popularized by 19th-century novelists like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, predictions of social and technological trends many years hence have entertained and fascinated generations. Along the way, these forecasters have logged their share of hits and misses. Time travel and manned-exploration of the Earth’s core remain the realm of fiction. (On the other hand, Verne got it right about men walking on the moon; Wells correctly foresaw that recorded video would one day be commonplace.)

Humankind has developed to the point where its technological evolution is going to become autonomous and progress by its own directive, that is, our technological momentum is about to make the leap from a linear progression to an exponential, multiplicative progression in the blink of an eye! This “Event Horizon” is called a “Technological Singularity” because all mathematical models utilized to predict our technological development break down at this moment, and they cease to give us a clear picture of what might lie beyond it. This moment will herald the liberation of consciousness from its current confinement and imprisonment in human biology, allowing us to utilize immense computational capacity far beyond the biological brain and to interact directly with computer sentience.
Actually, our technological development has been experiencing exponential growth for some time; however, at the beginning of any exponential growth curve, changes are very slight and nearly imperceptible, appearing very much like basic linear growth. Regardless of how slow this process starts off, as the rapidly expanding growth curve deepens, immense changes to the system become exceedingly apparent, and then it then strikingly and abruptly mutates.

Input/ Output - Italian Futurism - The Manifesto of Futurism (F. T. Marinetti, 1909) These are the famous lines marinetti published in 1909 as the "Manifesto of Futurism" in Le Figaro newspaper:
  • We intend to sing the love of danger, the habit of energy and fearlessness.
  • Courage, audacity, and revolt will be essential elements of our poetry.
  • Up to now literature has exalted a pensive immobility, ecstasy, and sleep. We intend to exalt aggresive action, a feverish insomnia, the racer’s stride, the mortal leap, the punch and the slap.
  • We affirm that the world’s magnificence has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of speed. A racing car whose hood is adorned with great pipes, like serpents of explosive breath— a roaring car that seems to ride on grapeshot is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace.
  • We want to hymn the man at the wheel, who hurls the lance of his spirit across the Earth, along the circle of its orbit.
  • The poet must spend himself with ardor, splendor, and generosity, to swell the enthusiastic fervor of the primordial elements.

    Futurism
Futurism came into being with the appearance of a manifesto published by the poet Filippo Marinetti on the front page of the February 20, 1909, issue of Le Figaro. It was the very first manifesto of this kind.
Marinetti summed up the major principles of the Futurists. He and others espoused a love of speed, technology and violence. Futurism was presented as a modernist movement celebrating the technological, future era. The car, the plane, the industrial town were representing the motion in modern life and the technological triumph of man over nature. Some of these ideas, specially the use of modern materials and technique, were taken up later by Marcel Duchamp (French, 1887-1968), the cubist, the constructivist and the dadaist.
Futurism was inspired by the development of Cubism and went beyond its techniques. The Futurist painters made the rhythm of their repetitions of lines. Inspired by some photographic experiments, they were breaking motion into small sequences, and using the wide range of angles within a given time-frame all aimed to incorporate the dimension of time within the picture. Brilliant colors and flowing brush strokes also additionally were creating the illusion of movement. Futurism influenced many other 20th century art movements, including Art Deco, Vorticism, Constructivism and Surrealism.

To fool our senses into believing haptic technologies are conveying the real thing, the "frame rate" needs to be significantly higher than for visual technologies, a few hundred updates per second rather than a few dozen — which is why development could take another decade or two. and so on. FUTURISM
In the 1920's and 1930's the term Futurism was loosely used to describe a wide variety of aggressively modern styles in art and literature. The Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti coined the term in 1909 for a movement founded and led by himself.
    Futurist Performance
FROM THE MANIFESTO OF THE FUTURIST SYNTHETIC THEATRE
The dramatic 'synthesis', which will take the place of the traditional play, will be 'autonomous, unreal, and alogical'. Although elements drawn from reality will be used, they will be combined according to whim, and the synthesis will resemble nothing but itself. With color, forms, sounds and noises, it will, like the works of Futurist painters and musicians, assault the nerves.... The spectators will be made to 'forget the monotony of everyday life' through a 'labyrinth of sensations' characterized by the most exasperating originality combined in unexpected ways. Anticipating the Surrealists, the Futurists declared that discoveries of the subconscious must be brought to the stage. The entertainment would 'symphonize' the feelings of the public, exploring and revealing those feelings in every possible way.

I think that that sort of guilty romanticization that Stuevner talks about could be applied to the Second World War, as well, and on a wider scale romanticism in general. The bad fades, the good remains and is magnified. We admire heroes even while forgetting that the situations which brought them to the fore were usually pretty horrible. posted by AdamCSnider at 12:26 AM on February 10 Dammit. In 1909 a handful of Italian artists and poets published a manifesto for a new movement called Futurism . The artists declared that scientific and technological inventions of the modern world had altered concepts of time and space, causing a deep change in the human psyche. Traditional cultural institutions, they asserted, must be destroyed and new ones created. Futurists followed this with manifestos calling for the reinvention of everything from painting, music, and architecture to cooking, warfare, and government.
Between 1913 and 1920, a number of Italian Futurist journals flourished, with pages devoted to what Futurists called , or "words-in-freedom." In order to mimic the speed and dynamism of contemporary life, this new kind of poetry rejected conventional grammar and punctuation and employed devices from non-linguistic domains. Existing at the intersection of art and literature, these poems were to be read visually and verbally, vertically and horizontally, iconographically and analytically.
