As a consequence of the greater emphasis signaled on human rights over the past decades, many UN summits in the 1990s sought to place issues of democracy, justice and rights on the development agenda. In the context of this worldwide process of democratic consolidation, many women's movements were born and sought to press for more equity between the sexes and address gender disparities.
The term Gender became popular in the 1980's as a replacement for "women and development". Gender is a social construct that asserts that the expectations and the responsibilities of men and women are not always biologically determined. Advocates of this approach claim that gender more easily accommodates race, class, ethnicity and male - female power relationships. Gender theory is applicable from the household to the international economy, but the most frequent applications of the theory are to the household and to employment.

Girl Talk: Biology and Language Skills Posted by Fred Tung Scientific American reports on a study attempting to explain the biological basis for why girls seem to have superior language skills compared to boys. As a father of two sons experiencing some of the trials and tribulations of pre-school, I notice these stories. Apparently, girls completing linguistics tasks show more brain activity in areas specialized for language encoding, while boys show activity in areas relating to visual and auditory functions. What does this all mean? [I]t implies that boys need to be taught language both visually (with a textbook) and orally (through a lecture) to get a full grasp of the subject, whereas a girl may be able to pick up the concepts by either method. Subjects ranged from 9 to 15 years of age. The next question is whether these differences persist with age. Permalink Gender Issues Science Comments (2) ... TrackBack (0)

Gender Diversity in US Corporations Posted by Lisa Fairfax Dan's post regarding gender diversity on boards makes some very significant points, particularly about the importance of critical mass. Many scholars worry that without critical mass, women will be marginalized, less willing to voice their opinions, and in some cases, experience pressure to conform. But Dan's point about critical mass also reminded me about the relative lack of critical mass in American corporations.

Casa Family Day
Posted by Liz Losh Gender issues
President George W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush are featured in new public service announcements for Casa Family Day , a group that advocates the educational and public health benefits of families sitting down and sharing the evening meal together. Although many American social scientists see a correlation between good parent-child communication or healthy life habits and having a strong family dinner ritual, not all of them are convinced that there is the causal connection that this campaign seems to imply. Feminists and members of non-traditional families may also see a certain amount of normative sexism in the campaign, particularly in the spot with the Chief Executive, which assumes that mothers necessarily do the cooking at the family meal.

That was the reply of the Home Minister to Ms Chong Eng’s call in Parliament to amend the law so that transsexuals who have undergone sex change operations be allowed to have their My Kad s corrected to reflect the change. Transsexuals and members of civil society reading the words of the Home Minister in the newspapers must have felt their hearts sink even further as this comes in the wake of the ruling in the High Court of Ipoh case of Wong Chiou Yong v. Funny, She Doesn't Look Bahraini
Bahrain's possible new ambassador to the US has interesting demographics. Not all that amazing if one is familiar with the region outside of stereotypes and post-1948 tensions. Still the background of the former legislator(-tress?), if legislating is what the Shura Council does, might cause some to be unduly surprised. MANAMA, Bahrain - The only Jewish woman lawmaker in Bahrain is a candidate to become this Persian Gulf kingdom's ambassador to Washington. . . . Huda Nono, a legislator in the Shura Council, said she was among people being considered for the post and referred further queries to the foreign ministry. . . .If Nono was appointed, Bahrain would be the first Arab country to send a high-level Jewish diplomat to Washington. . . . Nono is the first Jewish woman in the Shura Council, a 40-seat body appointed by the king that also has a Christian among its 11 female legislators. . . . Nono replaced her cousin Ibrahim Nono, who held the Shura Council seat for four years. Posted by Matthew Hogan at 05:33 AM Comments (2) TrackBack

Why (Most) Men Shouldn’t Blog
My wife recently pointed me to an article with an interesting and politically incorrect title WHY (MOST) WOMEN SHOULDN'T RUN In this article Michael Boyle questions the wisdom of long distance running for women. He advocates interval training rather than marathons because of the higher potential for injury for women relative to men. The crux of the article is described in the paragraph below. Why do I say this? Two simple reasons. Anatomy and physics. My favorite two sciences. No matter how hard you try or how well you eat, you can't change your skeleton. The problem with most women and running comes down to something they call Q angle in sportsmedicine. I won't bore you with the details, but it boils down to this. Wider hips make for narrow knees. This angle of hip to knee creates problems. Problems are magnified based on the number of steps. The average person gets about 1500 foot strikes per mile. Do the math on your 5-mile run. Running produces forces in the area of two to five times bodyweight per foot contact. Do we need more math? The article (originally titled as a question Should Women Run?

Gender Issues As a member of the Senate, I am privileged and honoured to have a voice in making positive changes that will bring equality to more Canadians than ever before. As a successful Asian woman, I feel I have a role to play in helping to promote the interests of women everywhere. In assuming this responsibility, I follow in the footsteps of many determined women who came before me. In fact, I owe a debt of gratitude to five women in particular: Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy, Henrietta Edwards, Louise McKinney, and Irene Parlby. These women, who have come to be known as the "Famous Five", challenged the conventional interpretation of "personhood". Up until 1929, this term applied only to men. Since only "qualified persons" could be appointed by the Governor General to the Senate, women were persons only in the meting out of pain and penalties but not in the important matter of rights and privileges. These women took their case all the way to the Privy Council in Great Britain where, on October 18, 1929, it was ruled that women were eligible for Senate appointments. This was a major step toward equality for women in this country. The influence of these five women continues through the work of the Famous Five Foundation, an organization which I support. The Foundation recently erected monuments of the Famous Five in Calgary and in Ottawa. They are also engaged in promoting the leaders of tomorrow - women who will act as role models for future generations. It is hoped that the spirit of the Famous Five, living on in memory, will help to further the cause of gender equality.

Women Are Soft
Women are so naive. They think the world is fair so you're just going to give them what they deserve. They don't have to fight for it. "men learn as boys that they can go out and change the world," and are thus more likely to change situations to their liking. Gee, I don't remember learning that? Did I absorb it by seeing male heroes in action movies? Or is it possible that this is baloney? Men expect big salaries. Women don't.
Men initiate negotiations four times more than women.
Women don't like to negotiate. It's too much like fighting so they give in. Reference: Lisa Summers , Toronto Star
