Are there clearly identifiable ways that treatment of emotional/psychological problems or relationship problems are different for the gay and lesbian population as compared to the treatment of such problems in the heterosexual population? The basic principles of effective psychological help are the same, but there can be significant differences. The importance of these differences varies according to the life experience and personality factors of the individual. Before addressing the potential differences, it should be understood that because of the complexity, uniqueness and variability of human personality, it is always difficult to make general statements about any identified “group” of people. A same gender preference group (gay or lesbian) is not a homogenous population any more than heterosexuals constitute a homogenous group. My own treatment or counseling approach is tailored to the individual problems or needs of my patients in either case. (For more information about this see About Marvin S. Beitner, Ph.D.

Pay Attention to Gender Issues
The different ways men and women communicate can make all the difference

A lot has been said about the differences between men and women. Whichever planet we are from, Mars or Venus, it does seem there are significant differences in the way we see the world and communicate with one another. For the design/build community, it can have a profound effect on whether projects end up as successes or failures.
Before I go any further, I should point out there are many women in my life. I have a mother, sister, wife and daughter. Lord knows, I have made mistakes in dealing with all of them. My wife blanches when she hears me making generalizations about women. However, even she will concede that we view the world in starkly different ways. Furthermore, she recognizes that how we communicate with the world is partly due to our gender.
The problem for us design/builders is that we are predominantly male, while our client lists consist of many females. Furthermore, I have found that of the male/female couples with whom I have dealt, it is the female who controls the money in many cases. Think about your past client experiences. In those client meetings, who was more vocal? Was it the man or woman? Who made more suggestions about design? Who seemed more vested in the project?

"House" for instance, is feminine "la maison."
"Pencil", however, is masculine "le crayon." A student asked, "What gender is 'computer'? Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether "computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for their recommendation. The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be of the feminine gender ("la computer"), because: 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2. The language they use to communicate with other computers is

3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory

http://www.mccormack4vt.com/Gender_Issues.htm
GENDER Gender is Fundamental When a baby is born the first question is whether it’s a boy or a girl. A person’s gender identity is a major part of his/her sense of him/herself. The roles assigned to men and women, as such, are among the most defining characteristics of a culture. At the creation of our country Abigail Adams asked her husband John, “What of the ladies?” and the question has been debated in our country ever since. The tradition of male supremacy has never been consistent with the American tradition of equality and justice. From the Seneca Falls Convention and the early Woman Suffrage movement, to today’s battles to protect reproductive freedom and economic opportunity, we have redefined the places of women, and so of men, in democratic society. At first impulse, an egalitarian society would simply seem to be gender blind, with everyone on a level playing field. However women walk very different paths than men do simply because they are women. Physically smaller than men on average, and more often the targets of sexual predation, women are more vulnerable to physical attack than men, for one example. Thus questions of public safety impact women differently. Women get pregnant, and men don’t, as a result of an activity for which men exhibit at least as much enthusiasm.

The Price Women Pay for Men's Emotional Illiteracy ~ Joel Rachelson, Ph.D.
This article was inspired by a conversation with a European psychotherapist at the 3rd International Conference of Pesso Boyden System Psychomotor at Basel. She was reporting, with some sadness, that her marriage was in jeopardy and that she was not very hopeful. One significant factor in the demise of the marriage was her husband's long-standing unwillingness to relate to himself or to her on an affective level. He had in fact, after years of resistance and refusal, recently entered psychotherapy but that progress was slow and it might be too late. What this touched is my ongoing sadness, puzzlement and frustration about the general state of emotional illiteracy in men. Also, what this brought home is the cost women pay for this illiteracy. It seemed very unfair for women to be the emotional containers and emotional vehicles for men in relationships. So, the need to write something that may help occurred. I found a very good understanding of the cause of this emotional illiteracy in men in John Hough and Marshall Hardy's book, Against the Wall: Men's Reality in a Codependent Culture. They maintain that the patriarchal culture in which we live has as a consequence the separation of men from their emotions. That the cultural rules and expectations for men are "Don't talk", "Don't feel", and "Don't express." These rules are similar to the rules for codependency and leave men with very little emotional self awareness.
