    Plant Breeding and Genetic Engineering
The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) supports the use of science and technology—in everything from field-based soil ecology to cyberspace-based market information systems—to aid Africa’s smallholder farmers in their urgent efforts to end widespread poverty and hunger. An important AGRA initiative is the development of new crop varieties that will withstand pests and disease; cope with drought, marginal soils and other environmental stresses; and dramatically increase farmers’ yields. Only with sustainable increases in farm productivity will smallholder farmers be able to feed themselves and their families, end widespread hunger, produce a marketable surplus, and stimulate economic growth. Our goal is to develop 1000 new varieties as rapidly as possible, using conventional breeding and participatory methods in which plant breeders work closely with farmers to develop varieties with the traits farmers need. AGRA is not at this time funding the development of new varieties through the use of genetic engineering. We have chosen to focus on conventional breeding techniques—which can be quite technologically sophisticated—for two main reasons:

AG Biotech Infonet

Ag BioTech InfoNet covers all aspects of the application of biotechnology and genetic engineering in agricultural production and food processing and marketing. Our focus is on scientific reports and findings and technical analysis, although the page also covers emerging issues of widespread interest, developments in the policy arena, and major media coverage. Australian Gene Ethics Network
AGEN is a federation of groups and individuals in Australia who promote critical discussion and debate on the environmental, social and ethical impacts of genetic engineering technologies. Council for Responsible Genetics
CRG, founded in 1983, is a national nonprofit organization of scientists, environmentalists, public health advocates, physicians, lawyers and other concerned citizens. CRG encourages informed public debate about the social, ethical, and environmental implications of new genetic technologies, and advocates for socially responsible use of these technologies. Genetic Engineering Network
GEN is a network of people opposed to the imposition of GM technology. All over the world, people are campaigning against genetically modified food, human and animal genetic engineering, and the bio-tech companies who are increasing their control over our lives and our environment.

Jump to: navigation search trnorel taaceldr Retrieved from Wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_engineering Genetic engineering, recombinant DNA technology, genetic modification (GM) and gene splicing are terms that are applied to the manipulation of genes, generally implying that the process is outside the organism's natural reproductive process. It involves the isolation, manipulation and reintroduction of DNA into cells or model organisms, usually to express a protein. The aim is to introduce new characteristics or attributes physiologically or physically, such as making a crop resistant to herbicide, introducing a novel trait or enhancing existing ones, or producing a new protein or enzyme. Successful endeavours include the manufacture of human insulin by bacteria, the manufacture of erythropoietin in Chinese hamster ovary cells, and the production of new types of experimental mice such as the OncoMouse (cancer mouse) for research. Since a protein sequence is specified by a segment of DNA called a gene, novel versions of that protein can be produced by changing the DNA sequence of the gene. There are a number of ways through which this could be achieved. After isolating a section of DNA that includes the gene, the gene or required portion of the gene is cut out. After modification of the sequence if necessary, it may be introduced (spliced) into a different DNA segment or into a vector for transformation into living cells. Daniel Nathans and Hamilton Smith received the 1978 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for their isolation of restriction endonucleases, which are able to cut DNA at specific sites. Together with ligase, which can join fragments of DNA together, restriction enzymes formed the initial basis of recombinant DNA technology.

Jump to: navigation search Genetic engineering is a process in which the DNA of an organism is selectively altered through artificial means. Genetic engineering is often used to produce "custom" organisms, such as for agricultural or medical purposes, as well as to produce biogenic weapons . The most common application of genetic engineering on intelligent beings in the Federation is corrective DNA resequencing for genetic disorders. A far more dubious application of genetic engineering is the genetic "enhancement" of individuals to produce improved senses, strength, intelligence, etc.

During Earth 's 20th century , efforts to produce " superhumans " resulted in the Eugenics Wars . Genetically engineered individuals such as Khan Noonien Singh attempted to seize power. ( TOS Space Seed This would lead to the banning of genetic engineering on Earth by the 22nd century , even research which could be used to cure critical illnesses. This ban was implimented because of the general fear of creating more tyrants such as Khan. It was also felt that parents would feel compelled to have their children genetically engineered, especially if "enhanced" individuals are allowed to compete in normal society.

Genetic engineering: who benefits?
Genetic engineering has come upon the world with a rush, accompanied by the usual claims of being a way of feeding the earth's poor and removing want. However these claims need to examined in the light of what has actually been done to date, and what is planned for the future. In fact the impetus for the development of genetic engineering, namely the rapid pursuit of maximum profits and futher control of world agriculture runs counter to the stated aims as well as encouraging unsafe science. Why are such risks being taken? They are being taken in the name of short term profits and market domination. Much genetic engineering is linked to producing crops resistant to specific brands of herbicide e.g. Monsanto's Roundup, which has been implicated in claims of raised hormone levels in people. The change is already here with no public consultation. In 1997, 15% of the U.S. soybean crop was grown from genetically modified (GM) seed. By this year if the Monsanto Corporation's timetable unfolds on schedule, 100% of the U.S. soybean crop (60 million acres) will be genetically engineered. Other food crops such as cotton, corn, potatoes, tomatoes and other food crops are lagging only slightly behind. This poses a real threat to food supplies and health. One of the excuses for this head long rush into genetic engineering is the claim that it will enable us to feed the world. However, neither Monsanto nor any of the other genetic engineering companies appears to be developing genetically engineered crops that might solve global food shortages. Quite the opposite.
