With frames Back to the map Geologicial column Geology resources ... Forum Geology of Northern Ireland Areas on a geological map usually are drawn with reference to the ages of the rock. For example, in the map below, the red areas are Tertiary in age i.e. the rocks which underlie the soil there were laid down between 2 and 65 million years ago. Those rocks are tertiary lavas which cooled to form basalt. However some of the granites (in the Mournes for example) are also tertiary in age and, towards the end of the Tertiary period, clays were laid down around the south of Lough Neagh. In this map we tried to show distinct rock types, rather than geological periods. Also the scale of the map has made it difficult to include detail. I would recommend the excellent Solid Edition of the Geological Map of Northern Ireland (1:250,000), published by the GSNI. Click on the rock type on the map or the key to get more information

... Water Geology:
The power of water has shaped the Apalachicola region, and now, for humans, water is power. The region faces tough questions: Who has the right to use water? Which users have more rights than others, and what yardstick(s) should be used to decide? Is there enough to support the region's natural systems, plus its water-based industries such as fisheries and agriculture, plus the flood of people expected to come here to live? The best way to start wrestling with these questions is to learn as much as you can about the region's natural patterns of water flow-rain, runoff, and rivers (both above and below ground) and what happens to water quality when these patterns are changed. A solid understanding of the subject is a necessary part of good decision-making about water use. To understand water, you must also know something about weather, which brings us water and takes it away; about rocks, which store and channel water; and about soils, which can transform water quality and let water run off, run through, or accumulate on the land's surface. Geology illuminates the present by explaining the past, bringing together the materials that make up the region with the processes and events that have shaped those materials. Weather, rocks, soils, geology, and water are inseparable. Studying these topics is not only vital to good land use decision-making, but it's also a journey worth taking for its own sake. Get ready for breathtaking vistas across vast oceans of time, the amazing process of turning mountains into beaches, and the story of a new kind of exploration - mapping the underground frontiers of water's journey.

The department now offers the following courses: a) B.Sc.(Honours): A FOUR years course comprising various subjects of basic and higher levels. It also includes some related subjects including Mathematics, Physics, Zoology and Chemistry. The students of this course must have to submit one research paper related to a compulsary Geological Field work.
b) M.Sc.: An ONE year program with subjects of higher and applied levels including one research thesis related to any of the specialised subjects.
c) M.Phil.: A TWO years program of specialized research. The student enrolled in M.Phil. program can convert his/her program to a program for Ph.D. if his/her research qualifies. In this case Ph.D. degree can be awarded instead of M.Phil. upon completion of more ONE ( total THREE years) year.
d) Ph.D.: A THREE years program of specialized research.
