http://www-esd.lbl.gov/GG/index.html
Current Projects Facilities Publications Staff Scientific Research Areas
The department is organized into five scientific research areas:
  • Computational Geophysics Rock Physics and Coupled Dynamics Hydrogeophysics Characterization and Monitoring Geophysics Computational Geomechanics
The primary purpose of these research areas is to advance the science supporting high-resolution methods for extracting subsurface properties and process information from geophysical, geomechanical, and fluid flow data. Computational Geophysics
Rock Physics and Coupled Dynamics
The primary focus of our laboratory efforts is towards the understanding of the geophysical properties of rock and sediments that are either not well described by conventional rock physics theories (e.g., poorly consolidated sands and clays, gas hydrates, fractured rock) or that have yet to be fully exploited (e.g., seismic attenuation, seismo-electric response). Complimentary theoretical efforts are also under way to explore the dynamics of poroelastic and seismoelectric response of rocks that contain multiple fluid phases. Hydrogeophysics
Research in the area of hydrogeophysics combines the disciplines of geophysics and hydrogeology to develop new approaches for characterizing the shallow subsurface over a range of scales for subsurface properties (such as hydraulic conductivity, geochemical heterogeneity, lithology, and moisture movement over time). This interdisciplinary field is unique in the level of fusion between hydrogeological and geophysical data sets, the incorporation of complex petrophysical models, and the application of emerging stochastic inversion techniques. In this area, new research is also being carried out to investigate the role of biogeochemical changes associated with bioremediation in the hydrological and geophysical responses resulting from processes such as dissolution/precipitation of minerals, gas evolution, and biofilm generation.

Program description: Resources: Other perks:
New initiatives within MGG include the South Florida and Caribbean Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit SFC CESU, Center for Southeastern Tropical Advance Remote Sensing (CSTARS), and the Research Initiative on Bahamian Stromatolites.
Requirements:
The undergraduate student wishing to prepare for graduate work in marine geology and geophysics must be well trained in the basic sciences. Applicants must take the GRE, and those whose first language is not English must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of at least 550. According to the special interests of the individual, the undergraduate major and minor should be in geology, physics, chemistry, and/or mathematics.
Funding opportunities:
The overwhelming majority of MGG students are supported as research assistants. These assistantships, which are awarded competitively, provide a monthly stipend and cover tuition costs. Students not supported as research assistants are generally supported on special fellowships provided by their employer or, for some non-U.S. students, their home country.

How did sea shells get on top of the Himalayas?
How, and why did mountains form?
When, and where will the next new mountains appear?
Will there be another ice-age, and when?
How can spring water in Africa be cool?
Is global warming a long-range trend?
These, and related questions are answered here: G eologists know that there have been several ice ages before the last one, and that they occurred about 200 million years apart. It is also known that each ice age followed a mountain formation, and that the mountains and the ice ages became progressively larger. However, there is no agreement on the causes of these phenomena. In this web-site is disclosed a new theory which naturally accounts for these events. T he earth’s crust is still warming up from the last ice age, and therefore, the future climate will definitely be warmer, regardless of other effects. This means that the polar ice will melt, and the ocean level will rise, resulting in a reduction of dry land.

Description
The Journal of Applied Geophysics is the continuation of the journal Geoexploration , founded in 1965 by the Geoexploration Publishing Group in Stockholm, originally for mining geophysics. The new title is designed to reflect the widening scope of the applications of geophysics. To meet modern needs, the Journal of Applied Geophysics places particular emphasis on environmental, geotechnical, engineering and hydrological aspects, while at the same time welcoming papers in traditional subjects such as mining and petroleum geophysics. Petrophysics in its widest sense including soil and rock-mechanical properties is another aspect that is covered by the Journal of Applied Geophysics
