Georgia is divided into 159 counties. Georgia's largest county is Fulton County, home to 816,006 residents. Taliaferro County, home to 2,077 residents, is Georgia's smallest. When Georgia's first constitution was approved in 1777, there were only eight counties. The last county to be formed was Peach County in 1924. Today county governments are very active and provide many services to their citizens. About half of Georgia's counties maintain websites where you can learn about their communities. Georgia, a southern state of the United States, is bordered by Florida on the south, the Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina on the east, Alabama on the west and Tennessee and North Carolina on the north. It is one of the fastest-growing US states and in 2005 it had an estimated population of 9,072,576. It has an area of 59,441 sq miles (153,951 sq km).
Known as the Peach State and the Empire State of the South, Georgia has Blue Ridge Mountains in the north. It has Okefenokee Swamp in southern part, Stone Mountain near Atlanta, former President Jimmy Carter home in Plains and Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site in Atlanta. It also has Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park at Fort Oglethorpe, Cumberland Island National Seashore near Saint Marys and Fort Frederica National Monument on St. Simons Island.
Its capital Atlanta is in the north central part. Other major cities in Florida are Augusta, Savannah, Columbus, Macon, Athens, Albany, Valdosta, Brunswick, Dalton and Gainesville. Visit the state when you get US visa.
Florida’s climate is humid subtropical type. Average temperature in Georgia is 39 °F (4 °C) in January and 78 °F (26 °C) in July. But the northern mountainous areas experience hot and humid summer and colder in winter than the rest of Georgia. Average rainfall in the state is 50 in (127 cm) annually in the plains and 75 in (191 cm) in the mountains. The interiors receive occasional snow falls. Tornadoes hit mountain areas and the state beaches face hurricane tides every year.
