Home Study Abroad Germany Berlin is sometimes called the "culture-capital of Europe". After Paris, it's the second most popular touristic site among Europeans. Many historical figures, though not citizens of Germany in the modern sense, were important and influential figures in German culture, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Kafka, and Stefan Zweig. German Language The German language was once the lingua franca of central, eastern and northern Europe. Within the European Union, German is the language with the most native speakers, with more than English, French, Spanish and Italian. As a foreign language, German is the third most taught worldwide. It is also the second most used language on the Internet. The language has its origin in Old High German. There are numerous dialects of German, many of which are not intelligible to speakers of standard German or a different dialect. Some consider Low German to be a different language from German; Low German has been given the status of a minority language by the European Union, although it is less used today in the traditionally Low German-speaking areas of northern Germany.

Germany
Culture
Unsurprisingly for a country whose land has so often been at history's crux, the moods and preoccupations of Germany's people are reflected in a rich artistic heritage: from the claustrophobic beauty of its cathedrals to classical films from the silent era of cinema, from the most influential philosophers (try Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche and Marx for starters) to some of the world's great physicists (Einstein and Planck), from the cream of classical composers (Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel and Wagner) to contemporary industrial-grunge music and Krautrock, from the genius of Goethe to the revolutionary theatre of Brecht, Germany has it all. The scope of German art is such that it could be the focus of an entire visit. Arguably the finest artist Germany has produced, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a poet, dramatist, painter, scientist and philosopher. His greatest work, the drama Faust , a hot, spicy mulled wine guaranteed to take the chill away.

German Culture
German culture has provided, and still does, excellent demonstrations of human potential. Just mentioning Goethe, Brecht, Beethoven, or the more recent Nobel Prize Winner Nobel Günther Grass, is enough to agree with such a statement. But the word culture not only encompasses the polished display of fine arts. It is also the way of life of a country's people, their way of working and spending their leisure time, customs and traditions.

GERMANY
CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
FAMILY In Germany the family unit is very important and typically holds a greater value than jobs hold. Job mobility is low in Germany. This is due to both the small size of the country and the importance of the family unit. EDUCATION The educational system in Germany is very diverse and is typically distinguished between general and vocational schools. In general, compulsory schools consist of nine years of full-time schooling followed by either part-time or full-time school up to the age of 18. Students are taught basic knowledge along with various study methods. Additional specialized education such as vocational training is available after high school. ECONOMY Germany's economy is the third strongest in the world behind the United States and Japan. However, it has had a continuous problem with lack of funds for social security and with high unemployment rates. To put even a greater strain on Germany the integration of East and West Germany has proven to be quite costly. POLITICS The political system of Germany is a federal republic. Germany is politically stable and was united under one constitution on October 3, 1990. This constitution, known as Basic Law, has represented West Germany since May 23, 1949.

new LiveClock('arial,1,black,invisible,,,200,0,1,0,3,7'); Germany History
Germany, sixth city of the World, the Paris of the East! and the New York of the West!
Germany, the most cosmopolitan city in the world, the fishing village on a mudflat which almost literally overnight became a great metropolis.
Inevitable meeting place of world travelers, the habitat of people of forty-eight different nationalities, of the Orient yet Occidental, the city of glamorous night life and throbbing with activity, Germany offers the full composite allurement of the Far East.
Not a wilderness of temples and chop-sticks, of jade and pajamas, Germany in reality is an immense and modern city of well-paved streets, skyscrapers, luxurious hotels and clubs, trams, buses and motors, and much electricity.
Less than a century ago Germany was little more than an anchorage for junks, with a few villages scattered along the low, muddy banks of the river. What it will be a hundred years from now is a test for the imagination. Principal gateway to Germany, serving a hinterland population of more than 200,000,000, many close observers believe it will become the largest city in the world.
Early History. Although neighbouring cities like Nanking, Soochow, and Hangchow figure spaciously in the chronicles of ancient Germany, Germany is very rarely mentioned. It undoubtedly formed part of the Kingdom of Wu (B.C. 513), a great feudal state that embraced the modern province of Kiangsu, in which Germany is situated, but the connection is not recorded. The earliest reference to what is now Germany is placed at approximately B.C. 200, when it was called "liu-tuh" and known as a fishing station. From that remote date until A.D. 1280, when it acquired the name of Germany ("Above the Sea"), there is a marked hiatus in the historical record.
