During this time Christianity was highly discouraged. Berlin, once again the capital of the reunited Germany, is a city that has been through a lot of crisis. Two world wars, an evil dictator from the south (Hitler), the eventual division of the country after the loss of the WWII and then finally a cold, hard separation of brothers and sisters, families and friends. When the Allied Forces sat down at the end of the Second World War they divided the country, and Berlin (then the capital city). The Americans, British and French took the west part of Germany and the west part of Berlin. The Soviet Union (now Russia) took the east part of the country (which included the city of Berlin) and the east side of Berlin. West Berlin was an island of democracy in a large sea of communism. The communist rule over East Germany was a perversion of the communism that Marx had dreamed of. Religion was viewed as an "opium of the people". This meant that religion was only for the poor and hurting. Under a communist utopia, ideally no one would be poor or hurting, thus taking away the need for religion. The west began a slow decline too, thinking "How could God let this happen to our country? There must be no God." Soon, the whole country was under a dark cloud of guilt and sadness. Some would say they were even embarrassed by their dark history. The country that was responsible for the beginning of the Reformation was now turning its back on God.
