Es war ein langer Weg bis zur Gründung des Deutschen Reiches im Jahre 1871. Der Begriff "deutsch" ist erst im 8. Jahrhundert aufgekommen. Er bezog sich auf die Sprache, die im östlichen Teil des Frankenreiches gesprochen wurde, und bedeutete "so wie das Volk spricht" (im Gegensatz zu der Gelehrtensprache Latein). Nach dem Tod Karls des Großen (814) brach das Frankenreich auseinander – im Wesentlichen entlang der Sprachgrenze zwischen dem frühmittelalterlichen Französisch und dem Althochdeutschen. Erst nach und nach entwickelte sich bei den östlichen Bewohnern ein Gefühl der Zusammengehörigkeit. Wo Deutsch gesprochen wurde, sollte auch "Deutschland" sein. Während die Westgrenze früh feststand, kam die Ostsiedlung erst im 14. Jahrhundert zum Stillstand. Die Berührung und Überlagerung von deutschen und slawischen Bevölkerungsgruppen hatte bis zum Zweiten Weltkrieg Bestand.
