Global Impacts: The Role of Microbes in Maintaining Atmospheric Balances
It may seem surprising to learn that bacteria are responsible for about half the photosynthesis on Earth. Most photosynthetic bacteria can be found freely swimming in the oceans that cover 70% of the Earth's surface. These bacteria affect key chemical balances in the Earth's atmosphere and play a crucial role in maintaining the habitability of the entire planet.
Metagenomics can help scientists gain insights into the mechanisms behind changes of energy and matter in the sea, the composition of Earth's atmosphere, and global climate. Bacteria and the Carbon Cycle
One of the most important ways photosynthetic bacteria affect life on Earth is through their role in the global carbon cycle. Carbon is the most abundant element in living things, including humans (excluding the hydrogen and oxygen in the water that makes up the bulk of our weight). However, most of the carbon on Earth is in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2), which cannot be used by animals and most bacteria.

spaceweb@oulu.fi - last update: 14 January 1999, 0950 UT (RR)
Introduction
Term 'global change' is used to describe the changes of the large scale weather systems on Earth , and especially the surface temperature increase, by man-made increase of atmospheric CO . There is no denying the fact that mankind has been able to change the atmosphere during a relatively short time period, and that at least in one case, i.e., the ozone hole, the effects have been serious. However, there is still quite a bit controversy about the effects of excess CO , the true amount of temperature increase, and the claim that no other mechanism than man-made CO could be operating if such an increase exists. It is the last point that is of importance for space physics, since it is possible that also the changes in Sun 's activity could be causing some changes in terrestrial climate. Here we will concentrate on this subject. In addition, we discuss the CO matter from the perspective of upper atmosphere, also an appropriate subject in space research.
Solar variability
Minimum name Time Wolf Spörer Maunder The 11-year solar cycle is the best known variability in the Sun. However, all solar cycles are not equally intense, and it is possible that longer period modulations are operating. For example, long periods of almost no sunspot activity at all have been recorded (see the table). Especially the Maunder's minimum (e.g., Eddy, 1976) is well known; it is perhaps noteworthy that it coincided with a "small ice age". In addition, there are some indications that the Sun's activity has had a peak in the 12th century.

Packrat Middens
Author: Kenneth Cole , USGS, FRESC Colorado Plateau Field Station
White-throated woodrat Fossil packrat (or woodrat) middens provide information on past environments because they are a rich source of debris collected by packrats in the past. Packrat middens have been important for paleoecological reconstructions of the arid southwest since their discovery in the 1960s. They contain extremely well-preserved leaves, seeds, fruits, twigs, pollen, bones, shells, and reptile scales. These fossils are usually encased in the amber colored crystallized urine, sometimes called "amberat". Packrat midden Midden is an archeological term meaning roughly "garbage pile," so the study of packrat middens is really the dissection of old garbage piles left by packrats. In order to conserve water in an arid environment, the packrat produces very viscous urine. The packrat often urinates on its garbage pile, marking its territory and building the midden. When this urine crystallizes, it acts as a glue holding the entire garbage pile together. Fossil debris held within the midden becomes mummified, preserving it indefinitely. As long as the midden is protected from water, such as under a rock ledge, it will persist. Packrat middens are aged using

Remember Chicken Little? “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” Remember? Well, I’m feeling more strongly all the time that we’re experiencing our own re-enactment of that funny little children’s story. In that fable, a lot of the barnyard citizens were spooked at first, and the alarm did spread. But by and by, older and wiser creatures spoke up, and by and by, everybody calmed down and resumed their bucolic life. Some months ago, while driving back home from an engagement, I became fascinated with George Noory’s late-night radio interview with a solar physicist, one of a number of very dedicated scientists who actually watch and analyze the sun itself, and its ongoing powerful effects on planet earth. This was after former Vice President Al Gore had sounded his alarm in nation after nation about his belief that we’re all in serious, imminent danger from global warming. And while the main topic of discussion on Noory’s program that night was the remarkable list of prophecies recorded by ancient Aztecs from centuries ago — gleaned somehow from their study and even worship of the sun — the guest scientist brought up the concern solar physicists share about “new, unexplained activity and disturbances” on the surface of that giant fireball in space!
