A Brief History of Golf
How the Game Evolved
There is general agreement that the Scots were the earliest of golf addicts but who actually invented the game is open to debate. We know that golf has existed for at least 500 years because James II of Scotland, in an Act of Parliament dated March 6, 1457, had golf and football banned because these sports were interfering too much with archery practice sorely needed by the loyal defenders of the Scottish realm! It has been suggested that bored shepherds tending flocks of sheep near St. Andrews became adept at hitting rounded stones into rabbits holes with their wooden crooks. And so a legend that persists to this day was born! Various forms of games resembling golf were played as early as the fourteenth century by sportsmen in Holland, Belgium and France as well as in Scotland. But it was a keen Scottish Baron, James VI, who brought the game to England when he succeeded to the English throne in 1603. For many years the game was played on rough terrain without proper greens, just crude holes cut into the ground where the surface was reasonably flat!
Early Golf Organizations
Early golfers played at the game for many years without any thought of forming a society or club until finally a group of Edinburgh golfers in 1744 formed a club called the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers . At this time, the first rules of golf, 13 in all, were drawn up for an annual competition between sportsmen from any part of Great Britain and Ireland. A few years later the Society of St. Andrews Golfers was formed and in 1834, when King William IV became the Society's patron, the title was changed to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

Few individuals in human history have been born to such a privileged position and had such a promising beginning in life only to have their lives come to such a tragic end as did Mary Queen of Scots. Mary was born to Scottish Royalty with family ties through her mother to the most powerful families in France,The House Of Guise, and through her first marriage to the Dauphin to one of the most powerful families in Italy, the House of Medici.

The Golf Pitch Shot

A pitch or "pitch shot" is a shot played with a highly lofted club (pitching wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge) that is designed to go a short distance with a high flight path. Pitch shots are usually played into the green, typically from 40-50 yards and closer. It's easy to picture a pitch shot when it is contrasted with the chip or chip shot. A chip shot is played from much closer to the green and the ball is in the air only a short (1/3) amount of time; the point is to get the ball onto the surface of the green and let it roll (2/3) toward the cup. Most of a chip shot is roll. A pitch shot, on the other hand, is in the air for most (2/3) of its distance, with much less roll (1/3) once it hits the ground. Playing Golf For A Living

THE HISTORY OF GOLF The Birth Of Golf G olf as we know it today originated from a game played on the eastern coast of Scotland in the Kingdom of Fife during the 15th century. Players would hit a pebble around a natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick or primitive club. S ome historians believe that Kolven from Holland and Chole from Belgium influenced the game. The latter was introduced into Scotland in 1421. However while these games and countless others are stick and ball games, they are missing that vital ingredient that is unique to golf - the hole. Whatever the argument, there can be no dispute that Scotland gave birth to the game we know as golf today. D uring the mid-15th century, Scotland was preparing to defend itself against an English invasion. The population's enthusiastic pursuit of golf and soccer to the neglect of military training (archery primarily) caused the Scottish parliament of King James II to ban both sports in 1457. The ban was reaffirmed in 1470 and 1491 although people largely ignored it. Only in 1502 with the Treaty of Glasgow was the ban lifted with King James IV (James 1 of England) himself taking up the sport. G olf's status and popularity quickly spread throughout the 16th century due to it's royal endorsement. King Charles I popularised the game in England and Mary Queen of Scots, who was French, introduced the game to France while she studied there. Indeed the term 'caddie stems from the name given to her helpers who were the French Military, known in french as cadets.

The Romans during the reign of Caesar played a game resembling golf by striking a feather-stuffed ball with club-shaped branches. Book illustrations show the Dutch playing a similar game on their frozen canals about the 15th century. Cross-country variations were popular in France and Belgium. In 1457 golf was banned in Scotland because it interfered with the practice of archery, which was vital to the defense effort. Nevertheless the Scots continued to brave the opposition of both Parliament and church by playing the game on seaside courses called links.

History The course benefits from a sustained programme of conservation and management. The original features have been preserved and enhanced, using modern greenkeeping methods and machinery. A forestry and heathland conservation programme is in place, and the Club's policy is to ensure the long-term future of its outstanding asset. The sandy heathland has excellent drainage properties, resulting in fine year-round golfing conditions. Our own natural resource, a bore hole, provides a comprehensive irrigation system serving tees, fairways and greens. The new clubhouse, which was built in 1990, provides modern locker rooms with shower and changing facilities.
Tradition
Tradition Established in 1913 Camberley Heath Golf Club was designed by the legendary H. S. (Harry Shapland) Colt. His legacy is an outstanding heathland course, where natural contours have been used to enhance the "strategic golf " experience. Camberley Heath has a rich golfing heritage. The Duke of York, later to become King George VI, was an honorary member and the Prince of Wales followed as patron of the club. The opening drive was taken by HRH Prince Albert of Schleswig Holstein.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews was responsible for formulating the rules of the game. Golf arrived in North America when an immigrant from Scotland formed a club in Montreal. Today we have invented new golf balls which means new golf a clubs and much more. The earliest traces of golf being played date back to 1350 in England where a stain glass window showed a man hitting a ball in a golf-like manner. Some people believe that golf came from Holland and others Scotland. Golf first gained a lot of popularity in Scotland . The Scotland parliament did not feel that it was good for them to allow golf to be played. They tried to forbid it, but the people said that it was unfair. The bans did not work. After golf came to America people from all over the world came to America to play. The U.S. formed the USGA or The United States Golf Association. America has also contributed to the types of equipment that the players played with. At the beginning of golf it was played with wooden balls. Today we play with a Balta ball. It is a water filled core wrapped in rubber yarn. Balta balls are played by professionals and by good amateurs, while the surlyn ball is played by the novices. Manufacturers are working on making an even better ball. Golf clubs are now made up of wood and iron. During the years it switched between those two. Golf has changed a great deal from when it was first played. It is now a fun sport that is played around the whole world.

Home About Us Costa Rica The Courses ... Reservations Did You Know . . . ? The History of Golf No one knows the precise origins of the game of golf. Some think it really began in medieval times, with shepherds hitting pebbles around the hillsides with their crooks. Another suggestion is that the game derived from the ancient Flemish pastime of chole, which was already known about and played in England by the mid-14th century. Perhaps the most likely forerunner was the Dutch game of kolf , documented as early as the end of the 13th century and portrayed in many Dutch landscape paintings by the 16th century. "Golfers" certainly played cross-country with a stick and ball, not into a hole but to certain landmarks, usually doors on specific buildings. It was in Scotland, however that the game really developed. Up and down the east coast, it apparently became so popular a pastime that in 1457 King James II, in an Act of Parliament, banned golf - and soccer too - because they were interfering with archery practice. Skill with the bow and arrow was crucial to keeping the English out of Scotland. The game remained uniquely - perhaps with its Dutch counterpart of

In fact, the resort is home to one of the oldest golf courses in North America. The original course was designed in 1895 by Spencer Oldham. In 1923, Donald Ross created a course that was both challenging and yet one with the natural landscape, which was hailed as one of the best in Pennsylvania upon its opening. Today, our impeccably restored course preserves the historic holes and features designed by its three famous golf architects. It is something of a golf architectural museum—encompassing three distinct eras of golf course design that occurred from the 1890’s to the 1920’s.
The Bedford Springs layout is a true masterpiece with a wide range of classic historic features not commonly found today. These include five par fives and five par threes. Small greens, “serpentine” and “doughnut” bunkers, the “Volcano Hole” and “Tiny Tim”—a Tillinghast designed Par Three that has come to be known as one of the most celebrated holes in all of golf architecture—offer players an unparalleled golf experience.

HISTORY OF GOLF IN INDIA Golf came to India in the 19th century. India was the first country outside Great Britain to take up golf. The first golf club in India was the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, established in 1829. It is the oldest Golf club in the world outside Great Britain. Golf was played in India for almost 60 years before the first major course opened in the USA and Europe in 1888. India was the first country outside Great Britain to take up the game of golf. The Royal Calcutta Golf Club, established in 1829, is the oldest golf club in India and the first outside Great Britain. Because of the British rule, the eighteenth century saw a mushrooming of new golf clubs in India. The founding of the Royal Golf Club of Calcutta in 1829 was followed by the now-defunct Royal Bombay Golf Club in 1842 and the Bangalore Golf Club in 1876 and the Shillong Golf Club in 1886. Today there are over 160 Golf clubs in India, including the world's highest 18-hole golf course at Gulmarg, Kashmir (altitude 2,700 metres). The world's highest 9-hole golf course is the Gyamchchona golf course that lies at a height of 4968 metres in the lap of the Kanchenjunga, the third highest Himalayan peak.

Golf History The origin of golf is open to debate as to being Chinese, Dutch or Scottish. A game somewhat similar to Golf was first mentioned in Dongxuan Records The Scots however regard golf to be a Scottish invention, as the game was supposedly mentioned in two 15th-century laws prohibiting the playing of the game of "gowf". Scholars, however, suggest that this refers to another game which is much akin to shinty or hurling, or to modern field hockey rather than golf. They point out that a game of putting a small ball in a hole in the ground using golf clubs was played in 17th-century Netherlands rather than Scotland. This is backed up by the fact that the term golf is an alteration of Dutch " kolf " meaning " stick , " club " and " bat " (see: Kolven). There are reports of even earlier accounts of golf from continental Europe and an image in Gloucester cathedral showing golf dates from 1350. The oldest playing golf course in the world is The Old Links at Musselburgh. Evidence has shown that golf was played on Musselburgh Links in 1672 although Mary, Queen of Scots reputedly played there in 1567.
