Golf History
Early golf history is unclear but it has been proved that the game of golf, as we know it, has been played since the middle of the fifteenth century. An Act of Parliament in Scotland, by James II in 1457, banned both football and golf because of their interference with the archery practice of his army. James IV also tried to stop the Scots playing golf, but became converted, and began playing the game himself towards the end of the fifteenth century.
The game was introduced to England in the early 1600’s by James VI and the first reference to golf in America was seen in 1659 when golf was allegedly banned from the streets of New York. The first golf club, or society, was formed in 1744 by a group in Edinburgh, calling themselves the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. This Society introduced the first set of golf rules. Some years following, the Society of St Andrews was formed. This Society eventually changed their name in 1834 to become The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, following the appointment of William IV as patron. In England, golf history indicates that the Royal Blackheath Golf Club came into existence in 1766, followed by the Old Manchester Golf Club in 1818.

Calvanese Charity Golf Tournament “Let’s have a golf tournament,” suggested Anthony L. Urillo, CEO of the Step Saver,
to his business associate Joseph LaPlume, then President of the former Bank of Southington. “Great idea,” came the reply. Soon it was learned that another business associate of the bank, Joseph Calvanese, Jr. was also interested in running a golf tournament; The First Annual Southington
Charity Golf Tournament was born. The mission of the tournament was to
raise money for local charities. For the first two years the tournament kept the name Southington Charity Golf Tournament. Prior to the third year Mr. Urillo suggested naming the event in honor of Kay Calvanese – in recognition of her personal commitment to local charities and causes. The event became The Kay Calvanese Memorial Charity Golf Tournament. When her husband died in 1994, it was decided it add his name as well to the fundraiser, to give it the current name of
The Joe and Kay Calvanese Memorial Charity Golf Tournament.

The History and Evolution of Golf In 1421, a Scottish regiment aiding the French against the English at the Siege of Bauge is introduced to the game of chole (the probable antecedent of golf). Three identified players, Hugh Kennedy, Robert Stewart and John Smale, are credited with introducing the game in Scotland. Golf, along with football, was banned by the Scots Parliament of James II in 1457, because it was interfering with military training for the wars against the English. The ban of golf is reaffirmed in 1470 in the Parliaments of James III after 43 years, and with the signing of the Treaty of Glasgow between England and Scotland, the ban on golf is lifted. The earliest reference to a set of specially made clubs is when King James IV of Scotland commissioned a bow-maker in Perth, Scotland to make him a set in 1502. Later when he ascended to the English throne, King James IV appointed William Mayne as royal club-maker in 1603. Mayne held an exclusive licence throughout the Kingdom. Club heads were made from tough wood such as beech, holly, pear and apple. Shafts were made from ash or hazel. The head was connected to the shaft using a splint and then bound tightly using leather straps. The cost, time and effort which went into making golf clubs priced them beyond the reach of the masses. The clubs especially long-noses and niblicks were also prone to breakage and a golfer could expect to break at least one club during a round. These factors meant that golf was typically associated with the upper echelons of society.

(5 Aug 2007) Are you looking for ways to impress your friends? Whether you’re out on the links or just hanging at the local bar, golf facts can always come in handy. Show clients you know your stuff while entertaining them on the course, or intimidate your golfing rival with little known facts about the game.
The following golf facts will put you in the know.
Our first golf facts are related to the invention of the game. Did you know that golf was first invented on the coast of Scotland in the 15th century? Although, it wasn’t until 1774 that golf was actually played professionally the way it is today. And when the rules were first written up, there were only 13.
Our second set of golf facts have to do with courses. As of 2005, there were 32,000 golf courses in the world with about 16,000 golf courses in the United States. Florida has the most golf courses in America with about 1,100, followed by California at 950.
