    The history of Golf
A thoroughly Scottish invention Games involving balls and sticks have been prevalent in practically every civilisation since the dawn of time. The Chinese were playing ch'ui wain (literally "hitting a ball") as early as 300 BC, and the Dutch were still enjoying a game revolving around the same concept (albeit on ice this time) around 1800 years later. While many claim that, as a sport which certainly does involve hitting balls with 'sticks', Golf owes much to these predecessors, it should never be denied that Golf as we know it today evolved in Scotland. It is generally accepted that a sport greatly resembling modern Golf was being played in the vicinity of St. Andrews as early as the 15th Century. In fact, James II became so exasperated by the fixation of some Scots with the game that he decided to ban it in 1457, believing that they ought instead to be preoccupied with the impending invasion of their motherland by English forces. Once his budding golfers returned their attention to archery in order to face the threat posed by England and the crisis had been resolved, however, James relaxed his restrictions. It is even rumoured the king found light relief himself in the sport. Once the approval of the king was secured, the sport swiftly became more popular. It was not until 1744, however, that anything resembling a set of rules was codified. It was then that the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers decided to clarify the most important rules of the sport everyone was now calling Golf. These original rules reflect the spirit of the modern rules, and are reproduced below:

Col Bedson and Stony Mountain Golf Course How Convicts Built a Course for Their Warden By George Siamandas MANITOBA'S FIRST GOLF COURSE Col Samuel Bedson is credited with building Manitoba's first golf course, Stony Mountain Golf Course in 1889 using convicts. It came only 16 years after the first Canadian golf course, the Montreal Club begun in 1873. Manitoba's first golf course was the dream of Stony Mountain Prison Warden Col Samuel Bedson. Samuel had been born in Montreal in 1849 and was the son of a military man. Bedson had come to Manitoba as part of the Wolseley expedition in 1870 and was soon put in charge of the prison at Fort Garry. When the prison was to be moved, Bedson selected the site of Stony Mountain, and the province's first stand-alone prison, opened in 1877. At this time Stony Mountain was a village of 200. The tee was opposite the Warden's residence. The series of bunkers, boulders, badger holes, ploughed land and downhill slopes made it challenging indeed. The course consisted of 9 holes; 9 very difficult holes. We know this from the first score, because the results of the first game were recorded for posterity. Dr Sutherland and partner Walter Nursey defeated Col Bedson and partner Dan Smith with a score of 97 to 113. Walter Nursey had designed the course. He had been Minister of agriculture in 1878. Nursey was the first to use the new granite curling stones introduced to Manitoba in 1881.

Next time you are betting some money on the golf course, make sure to install this POPaPUtt in the hole while your partner is looking over somewhere else. Adding to the tradition of non-stop hilarity on the greens is the Pop Up! golf prank which appears to be a small spring loaded device that will cause a ball to come shooting back out of a hole after it’s fallen in. Of course you’ll need a clever distraction in order to slip the Pop Up! into the hole without anyone seeing but once it’s there you can be sure your prank will go down in the annals of golf history. via Coolest-gadgets annals Consumer ... comments

Golf history made in 2006
As we say goodbye to 2006, history will reflect that it was a very good year for the sport of golf. The male and female athletes to be named Associated Press Athletes of The Year, are golfers. Tiger Woods and Lorena Ochoa will be the athletes honored for their dominant years, but they are also great role models for other golfers and athletes. When I heard the announcement, I thought it was incredibly unique to have both athletes come from the sport of golf. You have to look back to 1945 for the only other time it has happened. Byron Nelson and Babe Didrikson Zaharias each won the award. Lorena Ochoa hails from Mexico and was very dominant as a junior and amateur player. She appears to be the heir apparent to be the best female player in the world. The LPGA tour is indeed on a roll with strong young American players competing now and coming up, as well as the contingent of existing and emerging foreign players who have been trained to win. It may not be another 61 years for us to have the athletes of the year both from the sport of golf. Oh, and please make no doubt about it, golfers are athletes!

History of Golf
Golf is an old sport; the exact origin is not clear and is often open to debate as to being either Chinese, Dutch or Scottish. However, the most accepted golf history theory is that this sport originated in Scotland during the 1100s. The game was mentioned in two 15th-century laws prohibiting the playing of the game of gowf. Some scholars have suggested that this refers to another game which is more akin to modern shinty, hurling or field hockey than golf. A game of putting a small ball in a hole in the ground using clubs was played in 17th-century Netherlands. The word golf derives from the Dutch kolf meaning stick, club or bat. Flourishing trade over the North Sea during the Middle Ages and early Modern Period led to much langauge interaction between Scots, Dutch, Flemish and other languages. There are reports of even earlier accounts of golf from continental Europe.
The major changes in equipment since the 19th century have been better mowers, especially for the greens, better golf ball designs, using rubber and man-made materials since about 1900, and the introduction of the metal shaft beginning in the 1930s. Also in the 1930s the wooden golf tee was invented. In the 1970s the use of metal to replace wood heads began, and shafts made of graphite composite materials were introduced in the 1980s. MOUNTAIN COURSE
Our Mountain Course was laid out in 1910 by Alexander ("Alex") H. Findlay, who immigrated to the U.S. from Scotland in the early 1880's and became one of the pioneers of golf in America. He is said to have played almost 2,400 courses in his lifetime, setting course records at many of them. Findlay was dedicated to the sport of golf and in 1926 tried (unsuccessfully) to create a six hole golf course at the Vatican.
In 1931 our Mountain Course was remodeled by Alister MacKenzie,
(pictured right), perhaps the most famous architect of the Golden Age of Golf Design. Dr. MacKenzie was the consulting architect for the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland. Among the principal courses planned and laid out by him were Cypress Point, and Augusta National, home of "The Masters".
The Mountain Course is shorter than the Links Course but begs for the straight shot. With smaller greens and more tree-lined fairways, this course will appeal particularly to the strong player. Par fives give good players the chance to go for the green in two, but if you miss, you're apt to bogey the hole. With more hills and blind shots than the Links Course, the Mountain Course will nonetheless impress players of all levels with its scenic views and engaging design.
There are five par threes, and on several the approach to the green is blind. But well struck shots will give good results. Bunkers and mounds continue to test the golfer, and placement of tee shots is key to giving the best angle to the hole. At the 4th you can see Mt. Marcy from the tee.

Golf History needed the hole, and it was the final bit that was missing in the stick-and-ball exercise. And the Scots were most likely the first to use a hole in the ground with the stick and ball. Most likely the hole was originally made by a rabbit, many thousands of which roamed the velvety links land on the Scottish coasts. Men on the east coast, in the Kingdom of Fife, home to St. Andrews, would hit a pebble around a course laid out by Mother Nature. Golf History was far more popular on the east coast than the west coast. The difference was that the west coast was much damper, due to the persistent rains which sweep across that terrain. And the golf balls were highly susceptible to dampness, since they were stuffed with feathers. Rabbit runs proved to be ideal fairways, an old sailing term which meant the easiest direction to navigate. The rabbits linked their burrows in the dunes by means of these runs, and foxes and hunters expanded the runs. Sheep and other animals were known to hunker down in the raw winds, wearing away the grasses and preparing the bunker areas. It became a wonderful place to play, with fairways and bunkers and, of course, a hole that was in place already, thanks to the proliferation of rabbits. The sandy playing areas also were good for something else, tees which were used to begin play and to continue play after each hole. Early golfers scooped sand to make a tiny platform for their initial shots.

A HISTORY OF GOLF FROM 1353 A.D. to the 21st Century The first recorded reference to chole, the probable antecedent of golf. It is a derivative of hockey played in Flanders (Belgium). A Scottish regiment aiding the French against the English at the Siege of Bauge is introduced to the game of chole. Hugh Kennedy, Robert Stewart and John Smale, three of the identified players, are credited with introducing the game in Scotland. Golf, along with football, is banned by the Scots Parliament of James II because it has interfered with military training for the wars against the English. The ban on golf is reaffirmed by the Parliament of James III. The golf ban is affirmed again by Parliament, this time under King James IV. With the signing of the Treaty of Glasgow between England and Scotland, the ban on golf is lifted. James IV makes the first recorded purchase of golf equipment, a set of clubs from a bow-maker in Perth, Scotland. Queen Catherine of England, in a letter to Cardinal Wolsey, refers to the growing popularity of golf in England. The first commoner recorded as a golfer is Sir Robert Maule, described as playing on Barry Links (near the modern-day Carnoustie).

Some authorities trace golf back to a Roman game called paganica. The Romans, who occupied most of the island of Great Britain from the A.D. 40's to the early 400's, played paganica in the streets with a bent stick and a leather ball stuffed with feathers. Other historians trace golf to a Dutch game called het kolven, a French and Belgian game called chole, a French game called jeu de mail, and an English game called cambuca. But most believe golf probably developed into the game as we know it in Scotland. Some say that it was first played by shepherds tending their flocks, passing the time by hitting rocks to targets with their shafts. Games would have developed between competing shepherds, playing across links land and back to their villages. One theory is that fishermen on the east coast of Scotland invented the game to amuse themselves as they returned home from their boats.

Golf History Home Golf Golf Shopping Chat Forums History Balls College Golf ... Travel History of Golf The origin of golf is open to debate among Chinese, Dutch and Scottish. Golf was mentioned on February 26 in the year 1297 for the first time in the Netherlands in a city called Loenen aan de Vecht. Here the Dutch played a game with a stick and leather ball. Whoever hit the ball in a target several hundreds of meters away the least number of times, won. The Scots however regard golf to be a Scottish invention, as the game was supposedly mentioned in two 15th-century laws prohibiting the playing of the game of "gowf". Scholars, however, suggest that this refers to another game which is much akin to shinty or hurling, or to modern field hockey rather than golf. They point out that a game of putting a small ball in a hole in the ground using golf clubs was played in 17th-century Netherlands rather than Scotland. This is backed up by the fact that the term golf is an alteration of Dutch "kolf" meaning "stick, "club" and "bat". The oldest playing golf course in the world is The Old Links at Musselburgh. Evidence has shown that golf was played on Musselburgh Links in 1672 although Mary, Queen of Scots reputedly played there in 1567.
