Background Graft-versus-host disease (GVH) is a disease of modern medicine. It most commonly occurs in bone marrow transplant patients receiving an allogeneic transplant of immunocompetent lymphocytes. The donor cytotoxic T lymphocytes attack the recipient's organs including skin, gut, liver, and mucous membranes. It may occur in 50% of recipients of allogeneic bone marrow transplants. GVH may also occur after maternofetal blood transfusions, intrauterine exchange transfusions, and administration of non-irradiated blood products to patients with metastatic malignancies or with immunodeficiencies. I just wanted to update everyone on how Daegen is doing. Daegen visited the clinic on Friday for his regular visit with one of his main doctors. Friday is green day for Daegen. That is the day that Daegen wears his green shoes and a green shirt. It is also green wristband day at the hospital. The doctor likes Daegen’s green shoes and always requests that he wear them on Friday. The doctor keeps telling Daegen that he wants the green shoes. Daegen keeps telling the doctor that the shoes are too small for him.
The laboratory had technical difficulties and was unable to get the percentage of donor cells in Daegen’s blood. The blood is drawn on Monday and we usually know by Friday. We had to wait until Tuesday to find out this week.

On Tuesday we got the results from the cytogenetics from the bone marrow aspiration that was done on October 04. Everything was okay with the cytogenetics. That is good news. The percentage of donor cells present in Daegen’s body is still 100% which is good. We want the donor cells to take root and e Daegen’s new immune system. If you remember from the first transplant we had a 50% donor and 50% Daegen. The percentages then started going the other way until Daegen’s body rejected the transplant.

February 4 th There are days when it feels like time is moving like thick molasses. There are also the days (like yesterday) where it seemed so hard to believe that it’s been 3 years since Zoë’s bone marrow transplant. The last two weeks have been a little challenging, with the PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) I’ve been re-living the weeks leading up to transplant. I can remember so many details of those days I guess fear helps make permanent impressions. Last year marked the 2 year anniversary which also meant that we were finally allowed to contact Zoë donor (as you may recall the bone marrow for Zoë’s transplant came from an unrelated donor) – we wrote our letter, included all of our contact information including this site and after 2 months of silence I asked for the info to be resent...still to this day no reply. I think a lot about Zoë’s donor, does she know what a beautiful gift she gave us?
