Identifying Features Appearance (Morphology)
  • Brown, with some darker markings
  • Black herringbone pattern on hind femur
  • Big hind legs for jumping
  • 2 pairs of wings: forewings narrow and relatively hard; hind wings large, membranous
  • Antennae not very long, 20-24 segments
  • Conspicuous eyes
  • Cerci (pair of appendages at end of abdomen) unjointed
Adult Males and Females
Males have a single unpaired plate at the end of abdomen. Female has two pairs of valves (triangle shapes) at end of abdomen used to dig in sand when egg laying. Immatures (different stages)
In very young stage, the grasshopper has no wings. In later stages, wings are visible as small pads at end of thorax.
Natural History Food
Many species of grasshoppers are general herbivores feeding on a variety of plants. Some species only like grasses. Habitat
Widespread in U.S. Predators
Birds, lizards, mantids, spiders, and rodents eat grasshoppers. Interesting Behaviors
Feeding: Although they eat many things, they still have preferences. Mating behavior: See how male courts female. Egg-laying: Female digs hole with abdomen. Some grasshoppers spit a brown bitter liquid as a defensive behavior in response to being handled. Use a piece of white paper and gently wipe the grasshopper's mouth if the spit is not evident. Before molting, grasshoppers do not eat and become less active. During the molt, they swallow air to build up pressure to split the old cuticle.

Many male grasshoppers make noise by rubbing their back legs together. There are about 10,000 different species of grasshoppers. Metamorphosis : Grasshoppers undergo simple (or incomplete) metamorphosis; eggs hatch into nymphs, which look like little adults without wings and reproductive organs. Nymphs molt many times as they grow to be adults. Anatomy : Like all insects, the grasshoppers have a three-part body (head, thorax and abdomen), six jointed legs, two pairs of wings, and two antennae. Their body is covered with a hard exoskeleton. Grasshoppers breathe through a series of holes called spiracles; they are located along the sides of the body. Most grasshoppers are green, brown, or olive-green. The biggest ones are about 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) long.

While I wouldn't have a problem with being able to jump so far, I think landing would be a problem.

Skip the navigation header body Problem: Grasshoppers Hosts: Too numerous to mention. Description: Of the approximately 115 grasshopper species found in Kansas, only 5 are considered to pose serious threats to vegetable crops. Important species include redlegged, migratory, Packard, differential, and two-striped grasshoppers. The differential and two-striped grasshoppers are most frequently encountered by home gardeners and commercial vegetable producers. Adults of the differential and two-striped grasshoppers can be separated from most others by their large size. Adults of both are robust and average 1 ½ to just under 2 inches in length. Differential grasshopper coloration is predominantly yellow and black, and the insects have complete chevrons (V-shaped patterns) on hind leg femurs. Two-striped grasshoppers are basically brownish or grayish. When viewed from above, there are two yellow (or cream colored) stripes running down the top of the head and meeting halfway down the wings. Chevron development on hind leg femurs is incomplete (i.e. dark markings are confined to the upper half). No single "seasonal life history" is applicable to all species of grasshoppers. However, some similarities do exist. For instance, all grasshoppers undergo incomplete metamorphosis. That is, there are three life stages: egg, nymph and adult. Most overwinter underground as fall-laid, banana-shaped eggs contained in pods.

    DESCRIPTION OF THE PEST
Several species of grasshoppers may attack sugarbeets. Both adults and nymphs can cause damage. Injury is more likely near the foothill rangeland; however, grasshoppers can migrate great distances.
    DAMAGE
Grasshoppers consume foliage, and if infestations are severe, may defoliate entire fields.
    MANAGEMENT
A large contingent of natural enemies serve to hold grasshopper populations in check most years. However, in outbreak years and particularly after an invasion, other intervention will likely be needed. Because most grasshopper problems begin outside of the field, migrating invaders should be monitored closely. Apply treatment if and when a field is invaded. Common name Amount/Acre P.H.I.+

Novel Machines Fight Grasshopper Scourge WHEN the rapacious hordes of grasshoppers descended upon the farmlands of the Northwest this past summer, laying waste thousands of acres of wheat and corn, the farmers called upon their mechanical ingenuity and went into battle with the insects with an array of strange looking machines.
One of the most effective contrivances in the grasshopper war consisted of a huge tank backstopped by a sheet of corrugated iron, and secured to the front of a roadster, as shown in the top left photo. As the auto speeds over the field, the hoppers fly up, strike the back stop and fall stunned into the tank below. The car cuts a clean swath along the line of attack. Electrified Screen Slays Hoppers Another stunt to halt the invasion made use of an electrically charged wire screen mounted on the front of an auto. Hoppers striking the screen as the car charged through the fields were electrocuted instantly.

    Grasshoppers
    Description:
Many species. Adults and nymphs: Brown, gray, black, or yellow. Strong hindlegs. Up to 2 inches long. Most grasshoppers are strong flyers.
    Common host plant(s):
    Lettuce, potato, beans and corn.
    Damage:
Feed on any available vegetation. When abundant, they may destroy complete plantings of such crops as lettuce and potato.
    Distribution:
Throughout United States. They are especially troublesome in central and northwestern states.
    Lifecyle:
Female grasshoppers lay eggs in sodded areas towards the end of summer. Nymphs emerge from these overwintering eggs near the beginning of summer and begin feeding on young plants. As the grasshopper nymphs mature, they migrate to other areas and feed on a large variety of plants. Nymphs mature into adults in about 1 1/2 to 2 months. Adults continue feeding until killed by cold temperatures.
    Cultural Control
Avoid planting gardens next to hay fields and ditch banks with high grasshopper populations. Seedlings may be protected by covering them with netting or cheescloth. Removal of debris and turning of the soil with help expose the eggs to predators and the weather.
    Organic/Biological Control:
Birds such as crows, cat birds, bluebirds, mockingbirds, and sparrows are natural predators of grasshoppers. Spiders may also eat them.
