Listening To Grasshoppers-
Genocide, Denial And Celebration By Arundhati Roy 26 January, 2008
Countercurrents.org
I never met Hrant Dink, a misfortune that will be mine for time to come. From what I know of him, of what he wrote, what he said and did, how he lived his life, I know that had I been here in Istanbul a year ago I would have been among the one hundred thousand people who walked with his coffin in dead silence through the wintry streets of this city, with banners saying, "We are all Armenians", "We are all Hrant Dink". Perhaps I'd have carried the one that said, "One and a half million plus one".* [*One-and-a-half million is the number of Armenians who were systematically murdered by the Ottoman Empire in the genocide in Anatolia in the spring of 1915. The Armenians, the largest Christian minority living under Islamic Turkic rule in the area, had lived in Anatolia for more than 2,500 years.]
In a way, my battle is like yours. But while in Turkey there's silence, in India, there is celebration.

NY Capitol News reports that there may not be a complete state budget by the March 31 deadline. Actually, they're reporting that some budget items that don't need to be decided by the start of the new fiscal year may be put off until later. The idea is to make decisions regarding education, heathcare, and other "basic budget" items now, and deal with the less vital decisions later, when there is more time to figure out just where we stand fiscally. The problem is, where we stand fiscally is on sand.

The most severe infestations are likely to occur during seasons when the weather is hot and dry. Scouting should begin in May and early June, and producers should be prepared to start management measures when young hopper populations reach threatening levels. Contents: Life Cycle

Life Cycle
Figure 1. Grasshopper life cycle. Grasshopper eggs are laid beneath the soil surface in pod-like structures that the female deposits from her abdomen. Each egg pod consists of 20 to 120 elongated eggs securely cemented together; the whole mass is somewhat eggshaped and covered with soil. A female grasshopper produces from eight to 25 egg masses. The species of grasshoppers that cause major crop loss overwinter in the egg stage, although a few other noneconomic species overwinter as nymphs. In the Northern Plains, grasshopper egg hatch normally begins in late April to early May. The peak hatch occurs about mid June and the hatch is usually nearing completion by late June. Cool and extremely dry springs may delay the hatch, allowing it to continue into July.

    Grasshopper Plague of 1874
    A Kansas Portrait
Inexpensive lands and the hope of a better life brought many settlers to Kansas in the years following the Civil War. Life on the frontier, however, had drawbacks. Indian attacks, droughts, depressions and grasshoppers discouraged settlement on the Kansas frontier. Grasshoppers posed a threat to farmers many times but no year was worse than 1874 when millions of the hoppers, or Rocky Mountain locusts, descended on the prairies from the Dakotas to Texas. In late July they came without warning in swarms so large they blocked out the sun and sounded like a rainstorm. When a swarm landed, the omnivorous pests brought near total destruction. Crops were eaten out of the ground, as well as the wool from live sheep and clothing off people's backs. Paper, tree bark and even wooden tool handles were devoured. Hoppers were reported to have been several inches deep on the ground and locomotives could not get traction because the insects made the rail too slippery. Settlers did their best to stop the hoppers by raking them into piles, like leaves, and burning them but these efforts were in vain because of the sheer numbers of the pests. The hoppers usually stayed from two days to a week and then left as they had come, on the wind. The areas hit the worst were the least prepared for such a disaster, where most of the settlers were new arrivals, who had not had time to establish themselves in their new homes.

    http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/orn/lubber.htm
    common name: eastern lubber grasshopper
scientific name: Romalea microptera (Beauvois) (= guttata (Houttuyn)) (Insecta: Orthoptera: Acrididae)
Introduction Description Life Cycle Habitat ... Selected References
    Introduction
Periodically, grasshoppers have been of economic importance in Florida. A few species sometimes occur in large enough numbers to cause serious damage to citrus, vegetable crops and landscape ornamentals. One of the species most commonly causing damage is the eastern lubber grasshopper, Romalea microptera . Most authorities give it this scientific name, but sometimes it is known as Romalea guttata (Houttuyn).
    Distribution
The eastern lubber grasshopper is limited to the southeastern and south central portion of the United States. The northern boundary is central North Carolina west through southern Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, to Texas. It occurs throughout Florida.
Distribution of Romalea microptera , the eastern lubber grasshopper.
    Description
The lubber is surely the most distinctive grasshopper species in the southeastern United States. It is well known both for its size and its unique coloration. The wings offer little help with mobility for they are rarely more than half the length of the abdomen. This species is incapable of flight and can jump only short distances. Mostly the lubber is quite clumsy and slow in movement and travels by walking and crawling feebly over the substrate.
