Home Study Abroad Greece Prehistory and Antiquity The shores of Greece's Aegean Sea saw the emergence of the first civilizations in Europe, namely the Minoan and the Mycenaen. Plato has described how the Greeks live round the Aegean Archipelago "like frogs around a pond"; their name has always been associated with the sea. After the internal struggle between Spartans and Athenians, all parts of Greece were united under the rule of Alexander the Great and aimed at the defeat of the 'eastern threat' of the Persians. Alexander led the Greeks to a victorious campaign which established a Greek Empire and introduced a new era in world history, the Hellenistic.

( Theodore Vryzakis, The sortie of Messologhi ) Byzantine Period Militarily, Greece declined allowing the Romans to conquer the land (168 BC onwards). Greece became a province of the Roman Empire, but Greek culture continued to dominate the eastern Mediterranean. When the Roman Empire finally split in two, the Eastern Roman Empire, known as the Byzantine Empire, centered around Constantinople (known in ancient times as Byzantium), remained Greek in nature, encompassing Greece itself. During the period of the Byzantine Empire Greece experienced fluctuating fortunes, but it succeeded in Hellenising and institutionalizing most of its new invaders.

Greece
History
During the Bronze Age (3000-1200 BC) the powerful Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean maritime civilisations flourished. According to Homer, this was a time of violence and wars based on trade rivalries, although it is thought that Minoan culture was generally peaceful and harmonious. By the 11th century BC the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures had collapsed, due to changing patterns of trade and a Dorian invasion from the north, and a 'dark age' ensued. By 800 BC Greece was undergoing a cultural and military revival, with the evolution of city-states, the most powerful of which were Athens and Sparta. Greater Greece was created, with southern Italy as an important component. This period was followed by an era of great prosperity known as the classical (or golden) age. During this time, Pericles commissioned the Parthenon, Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King , Socrates taught young Athenians the rigours of logic, and a tradition of democracy (literally, 'control by the people') was ushered in. The classical age came to an end with the Peloponnesian Wars (431-404 AD) in which the militaristic Spartans defeated the Athenians.

History of Greece
Greek civilization was one of the earliest civilizations. City states began around 1000 BC. Greek culture began to thrive; Greeks were learned in philosophy, literature and arts. They loved sports. The first Olympics began 776 B.C. By 400 B.C., Greek civilization reached its peak. Philip of Macedonia conquered Greece in 338 B.C. and after his assasination, his son Alexander the Great became the leader of this empire. Alexander had conquered the Middle East area but after his death in 323 B.C., the empire declined.
In 146 B.C., Romans had control. In 1460, Greece came under the Ottoman empire which ruled Greece for 400 years. In 1800’s, Greece revolted. Prince Otto became the King of Greece. By World War II, Greece was occupied by German and Italian forces. They sided with the Allies. By 1949, the government had aid from United States and won against the communists.

Greece
HISTORY
The Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire began in 1821 and concluded with the winning of independence in 1830. With the support of England, France, and Russia, a monarchy was established. A Bavarian prince, Otto, was named king in 1833. He was deposed 30 years later, and the Great Powers chose a prince of the Danish House of Glucksberg as his successor. He became George I, King of the Hellenes. The Megali Idea (Great Idea), a vision of uniting all Greeks of the declining Ottoman Empire within the newly independent Greek State, exerted strong influence on the early Greek state. At independence, Greece had an area of 47,515 square kilometers (18,346 square mi.), and its northern boundary extended from the Gulf of Volos to the Gulf of Arta. The Ionian Islands were added in 1864; Thessaly and part of Epirus in 1881; Macedonia, Crete, Epirus, and the Aegean Islands in 1913; Western Thrace in 1918; and the Dodecanese Islands in 1947. Greece entered World War I in 1917 on the side of the Allies. After the war, Greece took part in the Allied occupation of Turkey, where many Greeks still lived. In 1921, the Greek army attacked from its base in Smyrna (now Izmir), and marched toward Ankara. The Greeks were defeated by Turkish forces led by Mustafa Kemal (later Ataturk) and were forced to withdraw in the summer of 1922. Smyrna was sacked by the Turks, and more than 1.3 million Greek refugees from Turkey poured into Greece, creating enormous challenges for the Greek economy and society and effectively ending the Megali Idea.

Greece History Greek football on a high
The Greek national team have never enjoyed the success on the field that their passionate supporters deserve. Right time
However, with the heavyweight capital sides AEK Athens FC, Olympiacos CFP and Panathinaikos FC now big hitters on the European club stage, and many of the nation's best players at prestigious foreign clubs, the time may have come for the Greek national team to make an impact on world football. Regular competitors
While Greece had a team in the finals of the 1920 Olympic Games, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) was a relative latecomer, only being formed in 1926. After that, Greece got into the swing of things and have only been absent from two - in 1930 and 1950 - of the qualifying campaigns for the FIFA World Cup since the tournament's inception in 1930. Depressing precedent
Their first attempt at qualifying, for the 1934 competition, was to set a depressing precedent for much of what was to follow. Fate gave the Greeks a hard task, pitching them against tournament hosts Italy in the qualifying rounds - back in the days when the hosts still had to qualify for the finals. Italian gift
The first leg of that match, played in Milan on 25 March 1934, ended in a 4-0 defeat for the Greeks. Perhaps graciously, with 20,000 tickets for the match having been ordered, Greece decided not to play the second leg. In return, the Italians gave their opponents enough money to buy a house in Athens worth approximately €315,000 to provide a home for the EPO.

G reece has a history stretching back almost 5.000 years. The people of the mainland, called Hellenes, organised great naval and military expeditions, and explored the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, going as far as the Atlantic Ocean and the Caucasus Mountains. One of those expeditions, the siege of Troy, is narrated in the first great European literary work, Homer's Iliad. Numerous Greek settlements were founded throughout the Mediterranean, Asia Minor and the coast of North Africa as a result of travels in search of new markets.
D uring the Classical period (5th century B.C.), Greece was composed of city-states, the largest being Athens, followed by Sparta and Thebes. A fierce spirit of independence and love of freedom enabled the Greeks to defeat the Persians in battles which are famous in the history of civilization -Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis and Plataea. Hanson (Warfare and Agriculture in Classical Greece, etc.) presents an elegant, lucidly written analysis of the 27-year civil war, a "colossal absurdity," that ended in Athens's 5th-century B.C. loss to Sparta and the depletion of centuries of material and intellectual wealth. Hanson deftly chronicles these destructive decades, from the conflict's roots (e.g., the fundamental mutual suspicion between Athens and Sparta) to its legacy (the evolution of the nature of war to something "more deadly, amorphous, and concerned with the ends rather than the ethical means"). Hanson considers the war's economic aspects and the ruinous plague that struck Athens before delving into his discussion of warfare. He offers a tour de force analysis of hoplite (or infantry) combat, guerrilla tactics, siege operations and sea battles...

Warfare in the Classical World: An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Weapons, Warriors and Warfare in the Ancient Civilisations of Greece and Rome Book Review From the rise of Greece to the fall of Rome, this superbly illustrated volume is a wonderful account of the warriors and battles that dominated Europe and the Near East for more than 1,000 years. The story begins at Troy, drawing upon Homeric legend and modern archaeological evidence. It continues through Greece's Persian and Peloponnesian Wars, Alexander the Great, Rome's Punic Wars, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, and the barbarian invasions. Although John Warry's text is worth reading, the color drawings of uniforms, equipment, weapons, warships, siege engines, and more are the real highlight and make the chronicle extremely accessible.
