    Guatemala
Guatemala’s population is almost equally divided between indigenous Maya and Ladinos (people of mixed blood and/or who follow Western culture), and, despite years of persecution and abuse, the indigenous Guatemalan culture is alive and well. For some 450 years, the ancestors of the great Maya civilization have managed to retain many of their original beliefs and customs because within their communities they were for the most part left alone. The opportunity to experience the strikingly pure modern version of the ancient Mayan culture, which is colorfully exhibited during fiestas, parades, markets, and the indigenous people’s every-day life, is what draws nearly a million travelers to Guatemala every year. The Republic of Guatemala sits at the northern end of the Central American Isthmus and is bordered by El Salvador, Honduras, and the Pacific Ocean to the east and south, Belize and the Caribbean Sea to the northeast, and Mexico to the north and west. The Guatemalan geography is wildly different from one end of the country to the other. The coastal plains that begin in the south gradually give way to a string of mighty volcanic cones at the southern limit of the central highlands. Beyond the volcanoes lie impressive granite peaks and rolling hills where the majority of Guatemala’s indigenous population resides. And yet further north, past the Cuchumatanes mountain range, is the huge tract of virgin rainforest known as Pet©n, which harbors the most impressive Mayan archeological treasures anywhere as well as a tremendous array of wildlife.

Some great nuggets of gold await you in Guatemala.
In the lowlands, don;t forget to explore the Petan rainforest and Tikal.
In the highlands, go to Chichicastenango - market day is the one of the most delightful and colorful experiences you coudld ever imagine. If you make it around Easter or Halloween (the Day of the Dead), you'll be treated to pagentry and parades, to song and dance. Note: Just don't go wondering off on your own in the cemetaries after dark on the Day of the Dead, bruja's abound. We found this out the hard way.
Besides Chichicastenango, explore the ancient Spanish city of Antigua.
Take a boat trip to Santiago Atitlan and stop in and pay respects to Maximon, possible reincarnation of the Mayan god, Mam. He'll come out of his incense drenched trance to parade around the island on Easter, along with the Christ statue.

Guatemala, the land of eternal spring...
Guatemala is the most northern of the five Central American countries. It is bounded on the north and west by Mexico, on the southeast by Honduras and on the east by Belize and the Caribbean. Guatemalan coastlines cover about 200 miles on the Pacific Ocean and 70 miles on the Caribbean Sea. Compared to a state in the US, Guatemala is roughly the size of Tennessee. Guatemala's total area of 42,042 square miles contains diverse landscape, ranging from thick jungle to rugged mountains and volcanoes. About two-thirds of the country's total land area is mountainous, with fertile valleys that have produced world famous coffees. The country is roughly divided into four geographic regions: the central-western highlands, a low northern plateau section that is largely jungle, the southern volcanic regions of the Sierra Madre, and the tropical coastal lowland.
