A short history of Haiti
Arawaks , when Christopher Columbus discovers the island in 1492. The island is named Hispaniola and claimed as a Spanish colony. France captures the western part of the island in 1664 and establishes the colony of Saint-Domingue. When Spain recognizes this claim in 1697 with the Treaty of Rijswijk the island is divided in a French and a Spanish ( Santo Domingo) part. In 1791 Negro slaves begin a resistance against the French. Between 1795 and 1808 (independent) Saint-Domingue includes Santo Domingo, but Santo Domingo is reverted to Spain in 1808.

HAITI HISTORY Since the signing of the Treaty of Ryswick between the kingdoms of Spain and France in 1697, the island of Hispaniola ( Haiti ) has played host to two separate and distinct societies that we now know as the nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The French eventually proved the value of Caribbean colonization, in an economic as well as a maritime and strategic sense, by developing modern-day Haiti , then known as Saint-Domingue, into the most productive colony in the Western Hemisphere. Find more information about this period from The Haitian Embassy Haiti History - Haitian Revolution Saint-Domingue eventually was lost to a Slave Rebellion . This positive impulse, liberally leavened with hatred for the white men, who had seized them, shipped them like cargo across the ocean, tortured and abused them, and forced women into concubinage and men into arduous labor, impelled the

HISTORY
The Spaniards used Hispaniola (of which Haiti is the western part and the Dominican Republic is the eastern) as a launching point to explore the rest of the Western Hemisphere. French buccaneers later used the western third of the island as a point from which to harass English and Spanish ships. In 1697, Spain ceded the western third of Hispaniola to France. As piracy was gradually suppressed, some French adventurers became planters, making Saint-Domingueas the French portion of the island was then calledone of the richest colonies of the 18th century French empire. During this period, African slaves were brought to work the sugarcane and coffee plantations. In 1791, the slave populationled by Toussaint L'Ouverture, Jean Jacques Dessalines, and Henri Christopherevolted and gained control of the northern part of Saint-Domingue. In 1804, local forces defeated an army deployed by Napoleon Bonaparte, established independence from France, and renamed the area Haiti. The defeat of the French in Haiti is widely credited with contributing to Napoleon's decision to sell the Louisiana territory to the United States in 1804. Haiti is the world's oldest black republic and the second-oldest republic after the United States in the Western Hemisphere. Haitians actively assisted the American Revolution and independence movements of Latin American countries. Two separate regimes (north and south) emerged after independence but were unified in 1820. Two years later, Haiti conquered Santo Domingo, the eastern, Spanish-speaking portion of Hispaniola. In 1844, however, Santo Domingo broke away from Haiti and became the Dominican Republic. With 22 changes of government from 1843 until 1915, Haiti experienced numerous periods of intense political and economic disorder, prompting United States military intervention in 1915. U.S. military forces were withdrawn in 1934 at the request of the elected Government of Haiti.

Independence
Freed blacks and mulattos joined with slaves against Napoleonic France to achieve the Caribbean 's first successful revolution for independence . The largely black nation remained isolated politically throughout the 19th century, though penetrated economically by international capitalism.
U.S. Occupation
From July 28 until mid-August Haiti was under the occupation of the U.S. Marine Corps , effectively making Haiti a colony in all but name. Efforts were made to improve Haiti 's infrastructure and education systems in particular, but because of the imposed nature of these reforms, with little regard for Haitian customs or traditions, these generally were not well-received or especially effective.
The Rise of Duvalier
A medical doctor, François Duvalier was not allowed to establish his own practice due to racist customs in Haiti (he was black). After securing employment with an American medical project that was fighting widespread tuberculosis, Duvalier had the opportunity to see the poverty that existed in the countryside. This fueled his interest in politics, and despite the fact that the Haitian government was predominantly mulatto, Duvalier was able to gain a following and joined forces with powerful union leader Daniel Fignole. Together they formed the popular

Haiti History
The Spaniards used the island of Hispaniola - also known as Haiti, Quisqueya, and Bohio (of which the Republic of Haiti occupies the western third and the Dominican Republic the remainder in the modern era) - as a base in the early 16th century from which to establish European domination of the so-called "New World". Native extinction and colonial rule
Haiti's indigenous Arawak (or Tano ) population suffered near-extinction in the decades after Christopher Columbus 's arrival in , in possibly the worst case of the widespread depopulation which followed the first European contact with the Americas. The demographic collapse of the period has been attributed by many to genocide on the part of Haiti's Spanish conquerors. The Catholic priest and contempory historian Bartolome de Las Casas wrote in his multi-volume History of the Indies
There were 60,000 people living on this island [when I arrived in 1508], including the Indians; so that from 1494 to 1508, over three million people had perished from war, slavery and the mines. Who in future generations will believe this?
It is thought by many historians today that Las Casas's figures for the pre-contact levels of the Arawak population were an exaggeration and that a figure of slightly over a million original inhabitants is more likely, though others have argued for figures of up to eight million.
