Bad breath, or halitosis , can be a major problem, especially when you're about to snuggle with your sweetie or whisper a joke to your friend. The good news is that bad breath can often be prevented with some simple steps. Bad breath is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grow in the mouth. When you don't brush and floss regularly, bacteria accumulate on the bits of food left in your mouth and between your teeth. The sulfur compounds released by these bacteria make your breath smell. Certain foods, especially ones like garlic and onions that contain pungent oils, can contribute to bad breath because the oils are carried to your lungs and out through your mouth. Smoking is also a major cause of bad breath. There are lots of myths about taking care of bad breath. Here are three things you may have heard about bad breath that are not true: Myth #1 - Mouthwash will make bad breath go away.

Battle of the bugs blamed for bad breath

Tools Related Articles Web Links People who suffer from bad breath could lack a set of "good" bacteria that bind preferentially to their tongues and keep foul-smelling micro-organisms at bay. The new research suggests mouths could be kept fresh with the use of pro- rather than anti-bacterial mouthwash. Bruce Paster and colleagues from the Forsyth Institute in Boston, Massachusetts used a gene-sequencing technique to identify the bacteria living on people's tongues. They found that those suffering from halitosis tend to lack the three bacterial strains most common in sweet-smelling mouths and instead harbour a host of previously unknown bugs.

Summary
Tongue scrapers or cleaners are slightly more effective than toothbrushes as a means of controlling halitosis in adults. This review, which included 2 trials (40 participants) found that, although the use of tongue scrapers was generally well accepted, the effects of tongue cleaning using scrapers or brushes appeared to be very short lived and there was some limited evidence of tongue trauma which occurred with prolonged use of one tongue scraper.

Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Bad Breath is an embarrassing problem. Many of us would have suffered from bad breath at some point in our lives.
Bad Breath is usually caused by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. Bad breath is not contagious, meaning you cannot catch it from someone else. Chronic bad breath, known as Halitosis , does not come from the stomach. The only odor that comes from the stomach is when you burp. Food eaten such as garlic and spicy foods once absorbed into the body can release odor through the lungs when you breathe. Food odors are transitory and should not be confused with bad breath. Human's sense of smell has the ability to adjust to odor. Therefore, most people with halitosis are not aware of their bad breath

Bad Breath (Halitosis)
What is bad breath?
The complaint of bad breath is unusual in children and the cause should be uncovered and dealt with directly. When your child's breath has an unpleasant odor it could be caused by food, dental problems, or by another underlying problem. The problem may be recent or a long-standing one.
What causes bad breath?
The causes are numerous. Some causes include:
  • poor saliva flow at night (bad breath in the morning is normal) eating pungent foods, such as onions or garlic poor brushing and dental care sucking on a thumb or other object occasionally, a symptom of a disease, tooth decay, or sinus infection.
How can I take care of my child?
  • More frequent toothbrushing improves most cases of mild bad breath. Also brush the surface of the tongue. If your child has a cavity, make a dentist appointment. Mouthwashes and chewable breath fresheners are heavily promoted in our society but provide temporary improvement at best. If your child sucks his thumb, a blanket, or other object, the bad breath will go away when this habit is given up. If your child is over age 4 years, ask your child's health care provider about some ways to discourage this habit before the permanent teeth come in.

Does your dog have bad breath? What is halitosis?
Halitosis, also called bad breath, is as an offensive odor emanating from the oral cavity. Bad breath is a common pet odor complaint. Causes are commonly related to the mouth and rarely related to other health problems.
What causes halitosis?
The most common cause of halitosis is periodontal disease caused by plaque (bacteria). Bacteria is attracted to the tooth surface within hours of teeth cleaning. Within days, the plaque becomes mineralized producing calculus. As plaque ages and gingivitis develops into periodontitis (bone loss), bacteria changes from somewhat irritating strains to bone destroying types which produce hydrogen sulfide causing halitosis. Other causes include: eating malodorus food, metaboloic disease (diabetes, uremia,), respiratory disease (rhinitis, sinusitis, neoplasia), gastrointestinal (megaesophagus, neoplasia, foreign body), dermatologic (lip fold pyoderma), dietary (fetid foodstuffs, eating stool), non-periodontal oral disease (orthodontic, pharyngitis, tonsilitis, neoplasia, foreign bodies, trauma including electric cord injury, open fractures, caustic agents, infectious agents including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, autoimmune diseases, and eosinophilic granuloma complex. Store shelves are overflowing with mints, mouthwashes and other products designed to help people control bad breath. Yet these products help control bad breath (halitosis) only temporarily. And, they actually may be less effective in controlling bad breath than simply rinsing your mouth with water after brushing and flossing your teeth. Certain foods, health conditions and habits are among the causes of bad breath. In many cases, you can improve bad breath with proper dental hygiene. If simple self-care techniques don't solve the problem, you may want to see your dentist or doctor to rule out a more serious condition that may be causing your bad breath. NEXT: Causes

Halitosis easier to hide than rotting body
By: Kiera Wiatrak /The Daily Cardinal - February 29, 2008
When Kiera helps her fourth-grade sister, she realizes how some things never change.
A few days ago, my 10-year-old sister, Perri, called me with a pressing problem. “My best friend has really bad breath,” she told me. “I don’t know what to do about it. If I tell her, she’ll get really mad at me.” I contemplated this for a moment. I was expecting her to confront me with a pissy school librarian, having fallen victim to the dreaded prepubescent silent treatment or a rotting body in the basement, but this was just dull. As much as I enjoyed being hailed as the social wisdom guru by my sister, I doubted anyone received this title from solving halitosis. “Can’t you just deal with it?” I asked her, really wanting to get back to my Sunday night chips and salsa binge. “Your options are sort of limited here.” “Kiera,” she said, slightly annoyed. “It’s really gross.”

    Welcome to iTonsil.com
Tonsil and adenoid removal is frequently performed to treat chronic tonsillitis and recurring infection. But obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is now the most common reason children have tonsil and adenoid surgery. This occurs when swollen tonsils and adenoids interfere with healthy breathing, particularly during sleep. It can significantly affect a child's behavior and ability to learn. In adults, OSA is linked to an increased rate of auto accidents, hypertension and diminished job performance. At iTonsil.com, you'll find a wealth of information about tonsils and adenoids. You can also learn about the PITA™ technique , a revolutionary yet simple way of performing a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. Clinical studies show PITA presents most patients with significantly less pain and a faster recovery. Many parents whose children have had PITA surgery are amazed at how quickly their children returned to normal activities. We encourage you to read their stories, and we hope this website will help answer many of your questions about tonsils and adenoids.

This vexing problem can be broken down into three main sources, the determination of which is needed in order to resolve.....external, intraoral, and extraoral. External Causes - This is the most widespread cause of transient bad breath. Many foods and drinks can cause mild to severe halitosis (garlic, onions, cheeses, alcohol, etc,). Most people are aware of these culprits and they cause little chronic problem. Smoking is a real breath killer, which can only be controlled by quitting. Intraoral Causes- The mouth itself is by far the most common source of halitosis. The culprits here are bacteria producing volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). These bacteria are found throughout the mouth but are most common on the surface of the tongue and in the tissue pocket below the gum line adjacent to each tooth. These bacteria thrive with poor oral hygiene and gum disease states ( periodontitis and gingivitis ). Dry mouth conditions can aggravate halitosis as well.
