coolest-gadgets.com Craziest Gadgets ... Wired Wednesday February 6, 2008 Halitosis Detector: How Bad is Your Breath? Categories: Weird Gear Tags: health weird Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, isn't a pleasant thing. Most of the time, it's easy to know just how bad your breath stinks, when your friends immediately walk away from you as soon as you open your mouth, or your spouse would rather take a rain check on making out. I don't want anyone to lose personal contact with their friends and loved ones, so here's a solution to combat bad breath. The Halitosis Detector is a bad-breath device that measures the four stages of mouth freshness. If you see a smiley face on the screen, you're good to go. But if you see a shocked face, like the one pictured here, you'll want to grab for that mouth spray or mouthwash. Pick one up for a discounted price of

Bad Breath (Halitosis)
What is it?
Bad breath (also known as halitosis) is breath containing an unpleasant odor. This odor can strike periodically or be persistent, depending on the cause. In many patients, the millions of bacteria that live in the mouth (particularly on the back of the tongue) are the primary culprits of bad breath. The mouth's warm, moist conditions make an ideal environment for these bacteria to grow. About 80 percent of bad breath is caused by something in the mouth. Some types of bad breath, such as "morning mouth," are considered to be fairly normal, and they are usually not health concerns. The "morning mouth" type of bad breath occurs because the saliva that regularly washes away decaying food and odors during the daytime diminishes at night while you sleep. Your mouth becomes dry, and dead cells adhere to your tongue and to the inside of your cheeks. Bacteria use these cells for food and expel compounds that have a foul odor. In addition, bad breath can be caused by the following:

Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Body emissions More on bad breath (Halitosis) Originally Published: May 23, 1997 Dear Alice, Like many people, I often have an embarrassing bad breath. Listerine and other mouthwashes won't be of any help for this chronic problem. There are lots of products available to get rid of "volatile sulfur compounds (VSC)" - that supposedly cause this - and I just don't know which one I should try. Also, what's your opinion on tongue-brushing? Thanks! Evil Breath Dear Evil Breath, Alice is certain everyone has, at one time or another, cupped a hand over her/his mouth to check whether her/his breath is fair or foul. When it comes to social situations, it is not uncommon for many Americans to be consciously aware of the way their breath smells to others. It can be embarrassing to have bad breath, particularly when you are conversing with someone face-to-face. You don't want to turn them off, or be faced with watching them back away, making negative facial expressions, and/or turning up their noses, every time you open your mouth. Seriously, bad breath is a common enough concern that it has helped boost the businesses of manufacturers of over-the-counter breath freshening products. However, you are right to point out that bad breath does not disappear with the use of breath mints, gums, sprays, mouthwashes, and the like because they only temporarily mask bad breath odors. So, instead of popping a mint in your mouth every five minutes, what are the more long-lasting alternatives?

    Bad Breath
    (Halitosis)
Bad breath (halitosis) is more than just a social problem. It can indicate much more serious dental trouble, including gum disease, tooth decay and even oral cancer. The best way to combat bad breath is to have your teeth cleaned professionally (called a prophylaxis) and to maintain your own homecare through regular brushing and flossing. There are also a few "tricks" that can keep your breath fresh. These are things you may already know, but are still worth mentioning. One is diet. Garlic, milk products, even alcohol can cause halitosis. Also, antihistamines or anything that can dry out your saliva will contribute to bad breath. Free Fresh Breath Exam Call 650-965-1234 or 1-800-372-8724. Finally, coffee and meats seem to add to the problem. By contrast, tea and more vegetarian foods are better for you. What can you do if you think you have halitosis Besides getting your teeth cleaned, you can work extra hard on your brushing and flossing, AND you can scrape the top of your tongue with a spoon or tongue blade. The dorsum (top) of the tongue contains a lot of sulfur compounds, which lead to bad breath. What about mouthwashes Generally, they are alcohol based, and will therefore dry out your saliva and, in the long run, make things worse. And, they really do not kill bacteria (with the exception of Listerine, which does kill some bugs).
