Alternative Names:
Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome
Causes, incidence, and risk factors:
Hantavirus has probably caused people to get sick for years in the United States, but it was not recognized until recently. text continues below advertisement A 1993 outbreak of fatal respiratory illness on an Indian reservation in the Four Corners area (the border of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona) led epidemiologists to the discovery of hantavirus as the causative agent. Since that discovery, hantavirus disease has been reported in every western state, and in many eastern states. Hantavirus is carried by rodents, particularly deer mice, and is present in their urine and feces. The virus does not cause disease in the carrier animal. Humans are thought to become infected when they are exposed to contaminated dust from the nests or droppings of mice. The disease is not, however, passed between humans. Contaminated dust is often encountered when cleaning long-vacated dwellings, sheds, or other enclosed areas.

Who gets hantavirus infection?
Anyone can become infected with hantavirus, but persons who have exposure to rodents or to rodent-infested areas are at highest risk of the infection.
Is hantavirus infection a new disease?
No. Outbreaks of disease compatible with certain types of hantavirus infection have been described in Europe and Asia since the 1930's. However, in the United States, there were no reports of acute disease associated with hantavirus prior to 1993. In the spring of that year, an outbreak of severe respiratory disease caused by a newly recognized strain of hantavirus occurred in the southwestern USA. It is now apparent that illnesses due to this strain occurred before the 1993 outbreak but were not recognized.
How is hantavirus infection acquired?

ARTICLE SECTIONS
Introduction
Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is a disease characterized by flu-like symptoms that progress rapidly to severe and potentially life-threatening breathing problems. Recognition of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome began with a mysterious string of illnesses in the southwestern United States in 1993. Several young adults experienced shortness of breath, quickly developed respiratory problems and died shortly thereafter. An investigation identified the cause as one of several hantaviruses. The hantaviruses that cause the syndrome are carried by several types of rodents, particularly the deer mouse. Humans become infected primarily by breathing air infected with hantaviruses that are shed in rodent urine and droppings. Although hantavirus pulmonary syndrome has been reported in more than 30 states, it's more common in the rural areas of the western United States during the spring and summer months. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome also occurs in South America and Canada. Other hantaviruses occur in Asia, where they cause kidney disorders rather than lung problems. Because treatment options are limited, the best protection against hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is avoidance of rodents and their habitats.

Hantavirus
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Alternative Names: Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome Treatment: Because the breathing problems progress rapidly and there is a high death rate, treatment must occur in the hospital, often with admission to an intensive care unit. Oxygen therapy is used, and regulated by close monitoring of the blood gases. Respiratory support with a breathing tube (endotracheal tube) and ventilator becomes necessary in severe cases. IV ribavirin therapy is experimental and is under evaluation for its effectiveness. Expectations (prognosis): Hanta virus is a serious infection with a death rate (even with aggressive treatment) exceeding 50%. Complications:
  • cardiorespiratory failure death
Calling your health care provider: Call your health care provider if you have had any exposure to mouse urine or feces (excreta), or dust that may have been contaminated with mouse excreta, and you have developed influenza-like symptoms.

Can Hantavirus Infection Spread Among Humans?
ScienceDaily (Jan. 22, 2008) See also: In Sweden, a form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome called nephropathia epidemica occurs primarily in the northern parts of the country. It is a zoonosis, that is, an infectious disease that is normally transmitted between animals and humans when a bank vole, for instance, releases Puumala hantavirus via its saliva, urine, and feces. Normally humans become infected by breathing in dust polluted by virus from bank vole secretions or by direct contact with the animal. Vector Borne and Zoonotic Disease Hantavirus Hantavirus in the United States and Arizona In May 1993, health officials investigated an outbreak of an unusual illness in the southwestern United States that can cause a person's lungs to fill with fluid. The investigation led to the identification of a new viral disease called Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). Since its discovery, HPS cases have been reported across the United States. What causes Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS)? HPS is caused by a newly identified strain of hantavirus found in certain types of rodents. It is similar to other hantaviruses except it attacks the lungs while most other related viruses affect the kidneys. The strain found in the western United States is called the Sin Nombre virus (Spanish for “virus with no name”) and is carried primarily by wild mice, particularly deer mice (

Hantaviruses occur in wild rodents throughout the world, who shed it throughout life in urine and feces. Transmission occurs between rodents. Transmission to humans is through inhalation of aerosols of rodent excreta. Recent evidence suggests human-to-human transmission may occur on rare occasions.
