Hawaiian language
Hawaiian is the ancestral language of the indigenous people of , the Hawaiians , a Polynesian people, and an official language of the state. It is notable for having a small phoneme inventory, like many of its Polynesian cousins. Especially notable is the fact that it lacks the phoneme /t/, one of only a few languages to lack such a phoneme. Its inventory consists of the consonants glottal stop ), /m/, /n/, /w/ (sometimes rendered as [v]), /l/, /h/ and the vowels /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/. Vowel-length is phonemic , and long vowels are indicated in writing with macrons Hawaiian is a member of the Austronesian language family , related to Samoan Maori Fijian , and other languages spoken throughout Polynesia , and more distantly to some Southeast Asian and Indian Ocean languages. Hawaiian is a critically endangered language. Since the number of first language speakers of Hawaiian has fallen from 37,000 to 1,000, and half of these are in their seventies or eighties (see Ethnologue report below for citations). On most of the Hawaiian islands, Hawaiian has been displaced by English and is no longer widely used as the daily language of communication. The exception to this is

Do you think it is fair/legal/just to make a foreign language a requirement for a residency position?
Some people claim that it is part of your skills and based on the patient population working with it may be justified.
I feel that this is an english speaking country and although a foreign language may be helpful, looked at as a bonus, or a deciding factor in residency selection it should not be a requirement because it is discriminatory.
What do you guys think? Stillorgan 11-11-2005, 07:18 AM I've never heard of that one. But I guess if it's in an area that's 90% hispanic it makes sense. I don't think it's discriminatory. It saves you the cost and effort of applying if you don't speak the language. The alternative would be for them to not make it a requirment but to only rank people with the relavent language skills. That's definately not a better situation for anyone. turtle,md

To answer your first question first it depends. Wanting to learn Hawaiian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_language), or pidgin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_English), or both, can be taken as a sign that you want to fit in, but it can sometimes be cringeworthy if you mangle the usage and pronunciation. Or, worst, it could be misconstrued as poking fun at the locals. It all depends on your attitude and how you present yourself.
As you know, Ryan is the boss here he is either pzarquon (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/member.php?u=3) or admin (http://www.hawaiithreads.com/member.php?u=1), depending on if he's writing in a personal or an official capacity.
You won't lack for a job. Nursing is an in-demand profession here but check out the local nurses' union (http://www.hawaiinurses.org/) for the scoop on local working conditions and job prospects. Leo Lakio September 26th, 2006, 10:01 AM

The Use of Hawaiian Language on this Site
Like the Hawaiian islands themselves, the Hawaiian language is unique among the world's languages. Originally, Hawaiian was a spoken language and did not exist in written form.
When western missionaries came to Hawaii, they transposed the sounds and characters of the Hawaiian language onto the Roman alphabet. While this did allow Hawaii's native peoples the benefits of a written language, as you might expect, there were many gaps created when the flowing spoken word and all it's subtlety was forced into a box in which it didn't really fit.
To bridge these gaps, a system of punctuation was used to simulate more closely the sounds of the Hawaiian language. The okina and kahako (macron) were added to aid in proper punctuation.
While use of these "special" characters does in fact represent a more "correct" and formal use of the written Hawaiian language, on the Internet, such characters present users who are unfamiliar with the language a significant accessibility issue. Searching in Google for "Kauai" is not the same as searching for Kaua'i . Very few people outside the Hawaiian islands would be aware of the existence of these special characters and would therefore have difficulty locating pages which use them.
Additionally, the special characters do not exist except in a handful of very specialized typefaces they have no keyboard equivalent. Often a "foot mark" or apostrophes are used to represent an

Now, in 2004, there are a growing number of Hawaiian-language pre-schools and about 20 Hawaiian-immersion schools. The Hawaiian language was not a written language until it was recorded by the early missionaries, who devised a simple written structure with only 13 letters - 5 vowels and 8 consonants. More complex sounds were ignored or lost.
