S pecializing in community-based cultural eco tours of Oahu, Hawaii - hiking, star gazing, storytelling and more... Home About Us Hawaii Culture Tours Interesting Stuff ... Contact Us We hope you've been enjoying our site. While browsing, you may have noticed that we spell the names of our islands differently at times. This page explains why. Most of our Hawaiian Islands, as well as many of the words from our language, contain characters not commonly found in English. They are the ‘okina (glottal stop) and the kahakō (macron). We at Hina Adventures make every effort to always spell Hawaiian words correctly, using these symbols whenever appropriate. However, you may have seen both " Oahu " and " O‘ahu ", as well as " Hawaii " and " Hawai‘i " in various places within this site. Those were not errors. The reason is simply that, if spelled using the glottal stop in these words (as is the correct spelling), you would not be able to find us quite so easily when searching the internet. So, against our own inclination, we have omitted the ‘okina from time to time where necessary. (It hurts us dearly to do it, but sometimes we must sacrifice...) For those of you with an interest in language, here's a quick Hawaiian Language Lesson:

Hawaiian is the ancestral language of the indigenous people of the Hawaiian Islands, the Hawaiians, a Polynesian people. Hawaiian, along with English, is an official language of the State of Hawaii.
Hawaiian is a member of the Austronesian language family, most closely related to Polynesian languages like Marquesan, Tahitian, Samoan, Maori, and Rapanui (i.e., the language of Easter Island), as well as to other languages in the Pacific, like Fijian, and more distantly to Indonesian, Malagasy, and the indigenous languages of Taiwan and the Philippines.
Use of the language
Hawaiian is an endangered language. On six of the seven inhabited islands, Hawaiian was long ago displaced by English and is no longer used as the daily language of communication.
The one exception is Niihau, where Hawaiian has never been displaced, has never been endangered, and is still used almost exclusively. This is because:

About Hawaiian
The Hawaiian language takes its name from that of the largest island in the tropical North Pacific archipelago where it developed. It originated as the Marquesan or Tahitian of the era 1000 A.D., when the Polynesian speakers of that language made the first Polynesian discovery of Hawaii and colonized the archipelago, establishing permanent settlements. Upon the permanent separation of those Polynesian colonists from their foreign homelands, their language began to gradually change, thereby developing into one that is distinct from the centuries old Marquesan or Tahitian. From "Hawaiian language", Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_language, 12/8/06, available under the terms of the GFDL New Pocket Hawaiian Dictionary
Here 10,800 entries have been digested from the 41,500 entry Hawaiian dictionary, 1986, with revision of scientific names of plants and animals.
