Hepatitis Hepatitis is a disease characterized by inflammation of the liver. Viral hepatitis refers to several common diseases caused by viruses that can lead to swelling and tenderness of the liver. The most common types of viral hepatitis are hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Hepatitis B and C can lead to serious, permanent liver damage. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is spread from person to person by putting something in the mouth that has been contaminated with the stool (feces) of a person with hepatitis A. This type of transmission is called "fecal-oral." The virus is easily spread in areas where there is poor sanitation or poor personal hygiene. Persons with hepatitis A can spread the virus to household members or to sexual partners. Casual contact—as in the usual office, factory, or school setting—does not spread the virus.

Nevertheless, it continues to occur here, and approximately one-third of the United States population has been previously infected with hepatitis A (Fiore, 2004). Viral hepatitis is a major public health concern in the United States, and a source of significant morbidity and mortality. Each year, approximately 30 - 50,000 cases of hepatitis A occur in the United States. Direct and indirect costs of these illnesses exceed $300 million, including wage loss and medical expenses. Adults who become ill miss an average of 27 work days per illness. Eleven to 12 percent of persons infected are hospitalized, and 100 people die as a result of acute liver failure annually in the United States due to hepatitis A (CDC, 2007). The unfortunate aspect of these statistics is that with 21st Century medicine, hepatitis A is totally preventable and cases—especially outbreaks relegated to food consumption—need not occur.

    76. Hepatitis B
hepatitis (HBV) What is it? Methods of transmission, preventing exposure, etc.
    http://www.pp.okstate.edu/ehs/kopykit/Hepatit.htm
Hepatitis B Hepatitis B is the most common form of Hepatitis. In the United States there are approximately 300,000 new cases of Hepatitis B (HBV) every year. "Hepatitis" means "inflammation of the liver." It is a liver disease which can lead to more serious conditions such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. While there is no "cure" for Hepatitis B, many people who contract the disease will develop antibodies which help them get over the infection. Those who do not will become "carriers", people who carry the infection for life. In a small number of cases, the disease can be fatal. While anyone can get Hepatitis, the chances of contracting the disease on the job are very slim. Like AIDS, the disease is NOT transmitted through casual contact. You can't contract HBV by:
    • Touching an infected person. Coughing or sneezing. Using the same equipment, materials, toilets, water fountains or showers as an infected person.
The HBV pathogen may be present in body fluids such as saliva, semen, vaginal secretions and any body fluids visibly contaminated with blood. Because of this the primary means of transmission are:
    • Sexual contact Contaminated sharps:
      • Used, contaminated needles
