      Definition:
Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver.
      Causes, incidence, and risk factors:
The disease can be caused by:
      • Infections from parasites, bacteria, or viruses (such as hepatitis A, B, or C) Liver damage from alcohol, drugs, or poisonous mushrooms An overdose of acetaminophen, which is rare but deadly Immune cells in the body attacking the liver and causing autoimmune hepatitis
Other medications that can cause damage to the liver include methyldopa (used uncommonly for high blood pressure), isoniazid for tuberculosis, seizure medications (like valproate and phenytoin), chlorpromazine, amiodarone (for irregular heart rhythm), and certain antibiotics (including trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and erythromycin). If you need to take any of these, your doctor will follow your liver function closely. Liver disease can also be caused by inherited disorders such as cystic fibrosis and Wilson's disease, a condition that involves having too much copper in your body (the excess copper deposits in organs like the liver).

Hepatitis scare in Vegas
Feb. 29: About 40,000 people are being told they may have been exposed to Hepatitis at a Nevada medical clinic. NBC's Jinah Kim reports. NBC News Channel
LAS VEGAS - A clinic may have infected a handful of patients with hepatitis C — but about 40,000 more should be tested for that virus, as well as for HIV, health officials said Wednesday. Six people who underwent procedures at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada now have the blood-borne hepatitis C virus, the Southern Nevada Health District said in a statement. Five of them were treated the same day in late September; the sixth is believed to have been infected in July, the district said. An investigation determined that “unsafe injection practices related to the administration of anesthesia medication might have exposed patients to the blood of other patients,” the statement said. Officials said the unsafe practices had been in place for several years and may have put others at risk. About 40,000 patients who received injections of anesthesia at the clinic will be told of the potential exposure in letters arriving next week.

February 22, 2008 ASHTON Kutcher and Demi Moore should run out and get hepatitis-A shots ASAP. So should Madonna, Lucy Liu Salma Hayek Kate Hudson and Bruce Willis Leif Armin Armiri opened last fall, but Armiri said, "We're not closed down, we're just concerned for our customers." And with good reason - symptoms of the virus include nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, appetite loss and jaundice. That's way worse than a normal hangover.
