Tips for the Herb Gardener
An Herb-Covered Garden Path Herb of the Month
Herb of the Month
Tender Perennial Lemongrass, (Cymbopogon citratus) Tender perennial Lemongrass is an attractive lemon-scented plant that grows in a large clump like fashion. It is an easy to grow herb that is wonderful in the landscape or for use in the kitchen. It is a key ingredient in Thai and Vietnamese foods. This perennial is from India and Sri Lanka and forms a clump similar to many ornamental grasses in gardens everywhere. It's narrow blue-green leaves shoot up to 3 feet from the plant's onion like base and are tough textured with razor sharp edges. The late season flower panicles can add another 2 feet, but only gardens with subtropical conditions are likely to ever see them. It is the hollow stems that are most often used in cooking. Give lemongrass full sun and organically rich, moisture retentive soil. To get started, buy a small potted division, and plant it the same depth it was growing. If you plant it in a pot, be sure it is a least 12-14 inches across. Here in the Texas Hill Country it grows to about 3 feet wide and 3 feet high! Lemongrass is high in vitamin A and the essential oil is enclosed in special cells that can be seen as translucent lines when a leaf is held up to the light. It will withstand temperatures of 10 to 20 degrees if heavily mulched. It is drought resistant and heat tolerant. Harvest lemongrass by cutting low to the ground or pulling off a sheath from the base of the plant. Use caution in handling to not get a cut from its sharp edges. Cut it back drastically in early winter. You can always dig up a clump to pot up for the winter.

Do you want more of your favorite herb? Why not use a method of propagation to put your herbs closer to your kitchen, in a container, or along a front walk! Cuttings Early spring is a great time of the year to grow new plants from cuttings. Lemon balm, oregano, tarragon, mints and rosemary are a few good examples for this method. Start by taking approximately four to five inch stem cuttings from new growth, cutting about ¼ inch below a leaf node (where the leaf comes out). Remove excess leaves and reduce the size of the remaining leaves to conserve moisture loss. Dip the bottom part of the cutting into rooting hormone, either in powdered or liquid form, and tap the excess off. (Rooting hormone can be purchased at Garden Escape .) Insert the cutting 1/3 to ½ way into your pot of growing medium. Half perlite and half-potting soil is good, or I use half-potting soil and half sand. Enclose the pot in a plastic bag and tie at the top to support a high humidity level. The pot should not be in direct sunlight. After a month, check for root growth by lightly pulling on the cutting. If it resists, that should mean there are roots. Gently lift out the new plant and re-pot. Let it gradually get used to its new environment by setting it out for a short time, then lengthening that time each day. Visit the

: Hi Debbie, : I don't know if you've done anything with your rescued aloe yet, but if it's still alive since November, it will make it. The part that is still in the dirt probably has a root system. Those that are sitting on top of the soil will probably form roots over time. : You can always go to www.google.com and put in quotes like this: "aloe barbadensis" and get info on how to care for it. It's an easy one to care for. You can also click on 'Images' and often get pictures as well. Here's a site that should be helpful.

The cold temperatures and frost can easily penetrate containers, freezing the soil and plant roots and killing all but the most robust plants. Protect parsley, buckler leaved sorrel and chervil with cloches.
Hand-pick fallen leaves from the herb bed and other debris - that may be harbouring over-wintering pests.
Place feeding stations in the form of fat balls or wild-bird seed nets in the areas where pests are known to visit. Visiting birds will also feed on over-wintering pests.
When the temperature drops to freezing, place a bowl of water out every day for the birds and other wildlife. Make sure that ponds and bird baths are not frozen over.
Reduce watering of plants in containers outdoors, but do not allow to totally dry out.

Herb Filled Pillows Make Over a Million Dollars Lauren Rosenstadt was a single mom working at a herb company in Bethesda, Maryland. A herb (pronounced "erb") is a plant that has medicinal, savory, or aromic qualities. One day while at lunch with a friend whose daughter suffered from insomnia, Lauren thought, "If I could fill a pillow with herbs, that would be soothing and help my friend's daughter sleep." A few days later, Sydney Greensheep, a pillow shaped like a sheep and filled with dried herbs, was completed. Lauren gave Sydney to her friend to try with her daughter. The next morning her friend reported, "It's unbelievable, she slept like a baby!"

Why not? Herbs are among the easiest plants to grow!
Basic Herb Culture Determining Where to Plant Herbs
Herbs are among the easiest plants to grow when given the appropriate environment. Gardeners should choose a planting site where herbs will thrive rather than just survive. Herbs are adaptable to a wide range of soil and growing conditions; however, many do not grow well in poorly drained soil and will quickly die in a wet site.
Because herbs must have well-drained soil to survive, If you have heavy clay soils it should be amended with compost, peat, or other organic amendments to improve drainage and air space for root growth. Raised beds and containers are excellent environments for drainage. Regions with sandy soils grow herbs easily.

They have been used to treat illness and flavour cooking; they were even believed to have magical powers. Do you want to have your own herb garden? Here are a few ideas on how to establish an herb garden.
    Plan your garden.
Consider the herbs you want to plant. Think about their types. Would you like annuals, biennials or perennials?
How much space will they occupy in your garden? If you want, you can purchase a book that can give you the right information on what specific plants you are planning to grow.
List or draw your garden on paper first. Separate the annuals from the perennials so when the time comes that you have to pull out the annuals, you won't be disturbing the perennials. Perennials can be planted on the edge of your garden so when it is time to till your garden they won't be in danger of getting dug up.
Another thing to remember is that you have to plant the tall ones at the back and the shorter ones in front. Also, provide your plants with enough space to grow. Proper position shall help you in this area.

    Archive: Herb Gardening
Author: Tim Henry Is there anything more refreshing on a hot summer day than a tall glass of iced tea with a sprig of fresh mint? Or a more calming end to a long day than a steaming infusion with chamomile or mint? A tea garden can ensure that you have a steady supply of your favorite herbs – and it’s surprisingly easy to grow. Most tea herbs grow quite happily in moderate sun, so choose a spot that gets about 6 hours of full sun a day. If you choose to grow your tea herbs directly in the ground, be aware that many of them will spread voraciously, choking out any other plants nearby. To prevent that, sink bottomless buckets or baskets into the ground and plant the herb plant inside it to help control the roots. Of course, if you choose to garden in containers, that won’t be a problem at all. Chamomile Chamomile is a very pretty, lacy annual (though there is one variety that is a perennial) that grows about 2 feet high. It likes partial shade to full sun, and sandy, dry soil. The tea is made from chamomile flowers rather than leaves. Harvest regularly once the plants start to flower. To dry chamomile, cut stems back to new leaf growth and tie in loose bunches. Hang upside down in a dry, dark place till the leaves are crumbly. Or: dry just the flower heads on drying screens in the oven or in the sun.

    Herb Gardening
Herb gardening is becoming more and more popular every day, and for a good reason. Herbs have practical value, serve a purpose, and with herb gardening you can actually use your plants. When most people think of herb gardening they automatically think of cooking, but herbs are also grown for their pleasant aroma and their beauty.
One important part of herb gardening is drying the herbs for use during the winter months, especially if you plan on cooking with them. First the tops of leafy herbs have to be cut, washed, and hung up for the water to evaporate. Then, tie stems together and hang up in a paper bag to dry. After two to three weeks they must be removed; crumble the leaves, dry them out in the oven, and store in a glass jar.
One of the most common herbs gown in herb gardening is basil. "Dark Opal" and regular green basil are beautiful additions to any garden and often used as decoration. Dark Opal has light pink flowers and dark red leaves. Basil isn't just used for its looks; it is used for extra flavor in tomato juices and pastes.

When you go to the supermarket you can see fresh herbs for sale. These same herbs can be grown in your garden with a minimal amount of trouble. You can grow them from cuttings or seeds. You can divide the heavy growing herbs and plant new herb plants. Whatever format that you decide to use, herb gardening adds zest to your world. Herbs are annuals, biennials and perennial plants. Herbs like Basil, Coriander and Dill are annuals that bloom for one season only and then die. Caraway and parsley are biennials that live for two seasons and bloom only in the second season. Perennials like chives, fennel, mint and tarragon ‘die’ over winter and then blossom each season once the plant has established itself. Herbs need to be planted in a 20 by 4 foot garden space. In this garden, you can have separate plots for each type of herb. This mini plot is a 12 by 18 inch herb garden. With the many herbs that are being used, colorful and frequently used herbs can be planted around the borders of your plot. Parsley and Purple Basil are examples of colorful border herb gardening.

Herbal Plants An herb garden is easy to grow, use, store and share. An herb is any plant used for cooking, fragrance, to make drinks or medicine. The term herb is also used to mean herbaceous, which is a botanical term for a leafy plant that doesn`t get a woody stem. Most plants we call herbs are indeed herbaceous. Ethnobotanist, scientists who study the relationship between people and plants make a differentiation between herbs and spices: Herbs are plants that we use the leafs, stems and flowers of, whereas spices come from other parts of the plant such as roots, bark or seeds. Some examples are cinnamon, from bark, turmeric, from a root, and pepper, a seed. Common varieties include basil, chives, thyme and mint. An herb garden is of course a garden containing herbs, but that can mean a few terracotta pots on the back steps or a an acre of carefully designed beds with hundreds of types of plants. Either way, an herb garden can be a lovely and useful thing.
Herbs are essential ingredients for flavoring and spicing up recipes all over the world. Without them, eating would be pretty bland. Herbs add flavor, character, and uniqueness to recipes. Used alone or in combination, they help to make cooking fun and enjoyable, and eating a sheer joy!

Another thing to remember is that you have to plant the tall ones at the back and the shorter ones in front. Also, provide your plants with enough space to grow. Proper position shall help you in this area. If you would rather keep herbs out of your garden (and some are quite invasive) you could have herb pots. These are large containers with three or more outlets for the herbs. Fill the pot up to the first outlet and plant it before continuing on with the filling and planting process. Usually, the herb that requires the most water is planted in the bottom hole, while the variety that requires the least, goes in the highest hole.
