Herb Gardening

Herb gardening is a past time and is enjoyable by people from all walks of life, of all ages, from all backgrounds and religions The most popular use for herbs is in cooking, and nearly all recipe can be enhanced with the addition of appropriate herbs. imagine tomato sauce without oregano? No thanks! Some dishes are defined by the herbs they use —pesto without basil just isn't pesto! Herbs have many other uses also. Some make wonderful teas, either as individuals or combined in blends. Chamomile makes a wonderfully soothing tea for unwinding after a hard day. Bee balm (Monarda) makes a tangy tea with citrus overtones. And in addition to being tasty, mint teas aid in digestion.
Medicnial herbs
Many herbs are also believed to have medicinal properties. The echinacea that has become popular as a cold remedy is extracted from the purple coneflower, a common garden perennial. Of course many gardeners grow herbs simply because they are attractive and durable plants. Bee balm not only makes a tasty tea, it is also a reliable perennial with lovely red, pink, or white flowers. And chamomile's daisly-like blooms brighten up any sunny border.
Soil Requirements
In general, most herbs prefer a moderately rich soil. An overly rich soil (or excessive fertilizing) can lead to vigorous growth. Many people find that the flavor of overfertilized herbs is bland, probably due to reduced essential oil content. The soil in your herb garden should always have excellent drainage. If yours doesn't, consider growing your herbs in some raised beds or containers.

Herbs have been around since time immemorial and served different kinds of purposes. They have been used to treat illness and flavour cooking; they were even believed to have magical powers. Do you want to have your own herb garden? Here are a few ideas on how to establish an herb garden. Plan your garden. Consider the herbs you want to plant. Think about their types. Would you like annuals, biennials or perennials? How much space will they occupy in your garden? If you want, you can purchase a book that can give you the right information on what specific plants you are planning to grow. List or draw your garden on paper first. Separate the annuals from the perennials so when the time comes that you have to pull out the annuals, you won't be disturbing the perennials. Perennials can be planted on the edge of your garden so when it is time to till your garden they won't be in danger of getting dug up. Another thing to remember is that you have to plant the tall ones at the back and the shorter ones in front. Also, provide your plants with enough space to grow. Proper position shall help you in this area.

Herb Gardening is Fun and Useful Herb gardening is becoming more and more popular every day, and for a good reason. Herbs have practical value, serve a purpose, and with herb gardening you can actually use your plants. When most people think of herb gardening they automatically think of cooking, but herbs are also grown for their pleasant aroma and their beauty. One important part of herb gardening is drying the herbs for use during the winter months, especially if you plan on cooking with them. First the tops of leafy herbs have to be cut, washed, and hung up for the water to evaporate. Then, tie stems together and hang up in a paper bag to dry. After two to three weeks they must be removed; You can then crumble the leaves, dry them out in the oven, and store in a glass jar. Basil is one of the most common herbs gown in herb gardening. “Dark Opal” and regular green basil are beautiful additions to any garden and often used as decoration. Dark Opal has light pink flowers and dark red leaves. Basil isn’t just used for its looks; it is used for extra flavor in tomato juices and pastes. Chives are very petite looking and resemble a blade of grass. They are much stronger than they look, however, and will grow well through a drought and a drought. Their toughness and sturdiness makes Chives a perfect plant for herb gardening, especially if the gardener doesn’t want plants that require a lot of hassle. Chives are good used in salads, egg dishes, and many different sauces.

GARDENING
Herb Gardening
When you go to the supermarket you can see fresh herbs for sale. These same herbs can be grown in your garden with a minimal amount of trouble. You can grow them from cuttings or seeds. You can divide the heavy growing herbs and plant new herb plants. Whatever format that you decide to use, herb gardening adds zest to your world. Herbs are annuals, biennials and perennial plants. Herbs like Basil, Coriander and Dill are annuals that bloom for one season only and then die. Caraway and parsley are biennials that live for two seasons and bloom only in the second season. Perennials like chives, fennel, mint and tarragon die over winter and then blossom each season once the plant has established itself. Herbs need to be planted in a 20 by 4 foot garden space. In this garden, you can have separate plots for each type of herb. This mini plot is a 12 by 18 inch herb garden. With the many herbs that are being used, colorful and frequently used herbs can be planted around the borders of your plot. Parsley and Purple Basil are examples of colorful border herb gardening. For your herb garden to thrive the soil should not be very wet. Herbs do not grow in wet soil. To make your herb plot well drained, remove about 15 to 18 inches depth of soil. To the bottom of the hole add some crushed stone or other material that is similar to the stones.

Herb Gardening With Culinary Herbs, Ornamental Herbs And Medicinal Herbs By Mary Hanna Platinum Herb gardening has been around for centuries and the joys of an herbal garden is well know to many gardeners. Even beginner gardeners can have a high quality of success by starting with the basics and working their way up to a more complicated herbal garden. You can plant a container herb garden or an indoor herb garden. There are three categories of herbs that can be grown in you herbal gardens, culinary herbs, ornamental herbs, or medicinal herbs. Rosemary Culinary herb gardening Culinary herb gardening's purpose is to add spice and flavor to your cooking. Culinary herbs are the herbs that use fresh or dried leaves in cooking. Some of the classic culinary herbs are parsley, oregano, rosemary and basil. You may even want to plant some sage and thyme. There is a difference between herbs and spices. Spices are seeds, roots, fruits, flowers, and bark while, as mentioned above, culinary herbs are fresh or dried leaves. When considering your culinary herb garden your most important decision is the location. You will need a sunny spot with at least six hours of sun. The more sun the herb garden gets the more flavor will develop in the herbs. Try to place your culinary herb garden as close to the kitchen door as possible. This will ensure that the herbs will be used daily.

Basil (A)
This is the plant that most people want year round, but it is a heat loving plant that only thrives during the warm summer months. We can lengthen its growing period by starting seed indoors and transplanting well-established plants into the garden when the weather has warmed, and we can bring the plants in in the fall. But ultimately, the plant knows and it simply stops. We encourage you to try basil varieties that tolerate cool weather and grow a little longer in our coastal climate; Thai and Cinnamon basil are the first plants that we offer in March and April, with the cold sensitive Sweet Italian coming along in May. For More Information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basil Care: Transplant into a warm, sunny part of the garden or into containers. Keep well watered and protect from snails, slugs, and other garden pests.
