Introduction Most small hiatal hernias don't cause any problems, and you may never know you have a hiatal hernia unless your doctor discovers it when checking for another condition. But a large hiatal hernia can allow food and acid to back up into your esophagus, leading to heartburn and chest pain. Self-care measures or medications can usually alleviate these symptoms, although very large hiatal hernias sometimes need surgical repair. Signs and symptoms Most small hiatal hernias cause no problems. But larger hernias may cause heartburn, belching or chest pain when stomach acids back up into your food pipe (esophagus). These signs and symptoms tend to become worse when you lean forward, strain, lift heavy objects or lie down, and they can also worsen during pregnancy.

Imaging Findings
CT of the abdomen
Computed tomography (CT) images demonstrate protrusion of the colon through the posterolateral left abdominal wall ( arrows ) representing an incisional hernia. There is no evidence of retroperitoneal lymph node enlargement. Liver, spleen, adrenals and the right kidney are unremarkable.

DEFINITION OF A HERNIA A hernia is defined as the protrusion of an internal organ through a normal or abnormal opening in the body wall. Most hernias occur in the abdominal wall through congenital and/or acquired defects. Congenital defects are opening in the body wall from the time of birth that fail to close, or re-open over time. Congenital hernias often appear in the groin and umbilicus (navel). Acquired defects occur after vigorous straining or injury causes tears in the body wall. Acquired hernias may appear in the groin, flank, or at the sites of old surgical incisions.

LAPAROSCOPIC HERNIA REPAIR
(Excerpted from Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons' Task Force on Patient Information)
A pproximately 600,000 hernia repair operations are performed annually in the United States. Many are performed by the conventional "open" method. Some are performed laparoscopically. Laparoscopic hernia repair is a relatively new surgical technique to fix tears in the abdominal wall (muscle) using small incisions, a patch (mesh), and special cameras to view inside the body. It frequently offers a more rapid recovery for the patient, less postoperative pain, and a quicker return to work and normal activities.
What is a Hernia?
A hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall, in which the inside layers of the abdominal muscle have weakened resulting in a bulge or tear. In the same way that an inner tube pushes through a damaged tire, the inner lining of the abdomen pushes through the weakened area of the abdominal wall to form a small bubble or balloon-like sac. When a loop of intestine or abdominal tissue pushes into the sac, severe pain and other potentially serious complications can result. Both men and women can get a hernia. Some hernias are present at birth (congenital), while others develop over time. A hernia does not get better over time; a hernia will not go away by itself. Hernias most commonly occur in the groin ('inguinal hernias'), around the belly button ('umbilical hernias'), and near the site of a previous surgical operation ('incisional hernias').

Umbilical Hernia
What is an umbilical hernia?
The umbilical cord is a strong, flexible pipeline. It carries a mother's lifeblood to her child, and anything that might harm the child is removed by her mother . This conduit enters the baby between the two rectus abdominus muscles of the abdominal wall. These two muscles (which we later try to keep firm with sit-ups) are connected by a white line of tough fibrous tissue called the linea alba . The umbilical ring is a small hole (about 1/2 inch in diameter) through which the umbilical cord passes into the belly. Usually, after the umbilical cord is cut and the stump begins to wither and fall off, the umbilical ring closes and the linea alba becomes a smooth, unbroken band.
If the umbilical ring is still open, the child has an umbilical hernia. The belly button "pooches" out, and gets bigger if the baby is crying or straining. Sometimes it looks almost like a balloon. When the baby is relaxed, this balloon can be gently pushed back into the belly only to reemerge a few minutes later.
Umbilical hernias
are quite common. They are found in about 10 percent of all babies, and as many as 90 per cent in some ethnic groups. They are also much more common in girls and in
