  • Vedas Hindu mythology is a term used by modern scholarship for a large body of Indian literature that details the lives and times of legendary personalities, deities and divine incarnations on earth interspersed with often large sections of philosophical and ethical discourse. Despite connotations of fiction in common usage, the term myth , in theological and academic studies, does not necassarility imply that a narrative is untrue. It must be noted that many of the topics that thus fall under Hindu mythology are cherised beliefs of Hindus and have been proved to be historical accounts. The mythological literature is intertwined with the ethos of ancient Vedic religion and Vedic civilization , and fundamentally constructed with Hindu systems of philosophy.

    Definition and Misconception
Though they are often classified as 'Hindu' or 'Indian' 'mythology,' the label does not capture the centrality of religious and spiritual affiliations of the texts that ring true today for most Hindus. They are replete with long philosophical discourses and are often seen as sourcebooks for Hindu ethics and practice. It is also to be noted that historical evidences of many acts or places of Hindu narratives have been found, establishing them as historical facts rather than just 'myth' or beliefs.

Itihasa
(Redirected from Hindu mythology Itihasa Sanskrit thus verily happened ) refers collectively to the epic Hindu scriptures , detailing the actions of divine incarnations on earth while interspersing them with often large sections of philosophical and ethical discourse. A parallel would be to term the Old Testament 'Christian mythology'. The most important of these are the Ramayana and the Mahabharata , of which the Bhagavad Gita is part. They also include a voluminous group of works known as the

Vali (Hindu mythology)
In Hindu mythology Vali was the monkey-King of Kishkindha, a son of Indra and the elder brother of Sugriva . He was killed by Rama , an avatar of Vishnu He was famous for the boon that he had received according to which anyone who came before him lost half his strength to Vali, thereby making Vali invulnerable to any enemy. Hence Rama slew him with an arrow in his back. At first, Rama was troubled by the performance of this dishonorable deed, but was later persuaded by Sugriva that it hadbeen right. Vali had been known as a good and pious monkey-king, but had been too arrogant to listen to Sugriva after his brother had accidentally sealed the entrance to a cave in which Vali was fighting a demon. Thus, when Vali had emerged, he'd found that the entrance to the cave was blocked (not a problem for his strength), and had then discovered Sugriva ruling in his place. Sugriva had thought that Vali was dead, and so had ruled in his stead, but though he'd tried to explain the situation to Vali, Vali would not listen, and had driven him out of the kingdom. Finding Religious Sites On-Line
This site is designed to help you navigate through the vast quantity of religious sites on-line. In creating this site, we at the Flint Public Library make no judgments as to the validity of these faiths. If a group identifies itself as a religion, we have taken that as sufficient reason to include it here. Wherever possible we have included the official site registered to a religious organization in preference to other sites on that topic. We have also included a number of general sites that you can use to explore further on your own, as well as sites on mythology, which is a component in many faiths. General Sites Beliefnet

Sometimes the astra is descriptive of the function, or of the force of nature which it invokes. The Mahabharata cites instances when the Nagastra (Sanskrit: Nag =snake) was used, and thousands of snakes came pouring down from the skies on unsuspecting enemies. Similarly, the Agneyastra ( Agni ) is used for set ing the enemy ablaze, as the Varunastra ( Varuna ) is used for extinguishing flames, or for invoking floods. Some weapons like the Brahmastra can only be used (lethally) against a single individual.
Apart from the astras, other instances of divine or mythological weaponry include armor ( Kavacha ), crowns and helmets, staffs and jewelery (
