History of mathematics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing The area of study known as the history of mathematics is primarily an investigation into the origin of new discoveries in mathematics , to a lesser extent an investigation into the standard mathematical methods and notation of the past. Before the modern age and the worldwide spread of knowledge, written examples of new mathematical developments have come to light only in a few locales. The most ancient mathematical texts available are Plimpton 322 Babylonian mathematics ca. 1900 BC), the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus Egyptian mathematics ca. 1850 BC), the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus (Egyptian mathematics ca. 1650 BC), and the Shulba Sutras Indian mathematics ca. 800 BC). All of these texts concern the so-called Pythagorean theorem , which seems to be the most ancient and widespread mathematical development after basic arithmetic and geometry. Egyptian and Babylonian mathematics were then further developed in Greek and Hellenistic mathematics , which is generally considered to be one of the most important for greatly expanding both the method and the subject matter of mathematics.

Need of Mathematics
If a school student is asked of which subject he is scared, the general answer to this is mathematics. Really, mathematics is a peculiar subject. But thee are a few people who loves mathematics and finds it a fun to practise the same.It is surprising to know that mathematics is the oldest form of all the other kinds of scientific studies . Probably mathematics had originated from the basic need of mankind
When was this mathematics invented
The time , since when men living in jungles started forming groups, they needed to know the number of members belonging to their group. At that time they used to live on hunting and needed to divide the prey equally among the members of the group. So from those needs of every day life actually the concept of counting came into use. But how was counting done in those days, that could not be known from anywhere.

"The Millennium Problems" from: AUD$25.99 PERSEUS GROUP
In 2000, the Clay Foundation announced a historic competition: whoever could solve any of seven extraordinarily difficult mathematical problems, and have the solution acknowledged as correct by the experts, would receive $1 million in prize money. There was some precedent for doing this: In 1900 the mathematician David Hilbert proposed twenty-three problems that set much of the agenda for mathematics in the twentieth century. The Millennium Problemschosen by a committee of the leading mathematicians in the worldare likely to acquire similar stature, and their solution (or lack of it) is likely to play a strong role in determining the course of mathematics in the twenty-first century. Keith Devlin, renowned expositor of mathematics and one of the authors of the Clay Institute`s official description of the problems, here provides the definitive account for the mathematically interested reader....... Riemann s zeta function and the Prime Number Theorem.
    http://www.freewebs.com/history_of_mathematics/
The role of Riemann's zeta function in the analytic proof of the Prime Number Theorem
Possibly the single most important problem in Analytic Number Theory, and certainly the driving force behind many of its' results, is the question of the distribution of the prime numbers. The proof, at the end of the nineteenth century, of what is now known as the Prime Number Theorem is one of mathematics' greatest achievements, representing the culmination of the work of some of history's finest mathematicians. Although the Prime Number Theorem has been proved in many different ( but all essentially equivalent ) ways, every analytic proof to date relies on properties of the Riemann zeta-function, illustrating the pivotal role this function plays. The distribution of the prime numbers, like so many other areas of mathematics, was first investigated by Euclid, who proved that the number of primes is infinite. However, the more immediate origin of Riemann's work came in a series of investigations by Leonhard Euler who proved, in 1737, that the sum of the reciprocals of the primes
    i.e. 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/5 + 1/7 + 1/11 + ........... is a divergent series, indicating the greater density of distribution of the primes than, say, the squares ( the sum of 1 + 1/4 + 1/9 + 1/16 + ....... being a convergent series ) . Euler also observed that this sum of reciprocals of primes, not exceeding x, seems to be

    3000 B.C.
ARISTOTLE-DEDUCTIVE LOGIC (340 B.C.E.) Aristotle wrote a book called "TOPICS" which started out with a discussion of deductive logic. The whole world reestablished this book starting with the Islamic translation on through time. THALES, FOUNDER OF GREEK GEOMETRY (585 B.C.E.) The birth of Greek astronomy has been attributed to Thales of Miletus. Thales brought from Egypt a number of fundamental geometric principles. Thales, an Ionian (western border of Asia Minor) who was active near the start of the sixth century bc has been credited with a number of geometric theorems. 1. A Circle is bisected by its diameter. 2. Angles at the base of any isosceles triangle are equal. 3. If two straight lines intersect the opposite angles formed are equal. 4. If two triangles have two angles and one side respectively equal, the triangles are equal in all respects. Thales was also well known for forecasting the solar eclipse, so he was also considered a scientist. SIEVE OF ERATOSTHENES (276-196 B.C.E.)
