From LoveToKnow 1911
HUNGARIAN LITERATURE In 1908 a parting of the ways between the younger and the older generations in Hungarian letters was definitely marked when some of the younger poets published the new songs of the new time in two volumes under the title The Coming Day, and founded the periodical West which, enlarging itself by the adoption of a political programme, was made their organ of progress. The most complete expression of the new revolutionary spirit found itself in lyrical poetry, which attained its full maturity in the poems of Andreas Ady (1877-1919). Ady's lyrics display a Hungarian language rooted in the remote past and awaken the old tones of the peasant-crusader ( curuczok) poetry of the 16th century and of the Protestant Bible, but transfused with a new idiom personal to himself. His language is submerged in the twilight depths of the soul, battles against the narrowness of middle-class morality, and revels in sensual love. His outlook on life attracted him towards the Socialist and Pacifist schools of thought, and he thus became the representative of those SocialDemocratic phrase-mongers who, in the autumn of 1918, led Hungary along the path of destruction. His poems were published in 9 vols.: - New Poems, Blood and Gold, By the Chariot of Elijah, Ye Must Love Me, Elusive Life, Self-love, Who Saw Me, From the Poems of Primeval Secrets, At the Head of the Dead.

Hungarian Literature Hungary
The Pre-Reformation Period The pre-Reformation period, which in pre-Christian times, up to about A. D. 1000, produced chiefly popular epics, and after the introduction of Christianity, works chiefly of a religious character, such as legends and hymns, mystic meditations and lives of the saints. Amongst the latter the most noteworthy is that of the Hungarian princess, Blessed Margaret. Almost all of these were the work of religious, such as Temesv¡ri Pelbart and R¡skai Lea. Contemporary with these are the sagas of the heroes and the chronicles. These latter are mostly in Latin and show especially the influence of the Renaissance, which was promoted largely by King Matthias Corvinus (1458-90), whose court became a centre of humanistic culture (Archbishop Vit©z; Bishop Janus Pannonius; the magnificent Bibliotheca Corvina ). Culture and literature were suddenly brought to a standstill by the invasion of the Turks and the consequent devastation of bishoprics, monasteries, and schools, and later through the divisions and confusion of the Reformation.

Hello Jim and others,
Something is fishy with this site, at least with their Hungarian titles.
Each of the titles on http://worldlibrary.net/Hungarian_Literature.htm are
copies of documents from the Hungarian Electronic Library (HEL), an effort of the Hungarian National Szechenyi Library: http://www.mek.oszk.hu/indexeng.phtml These titles are available for free, without registration at HEL. Worldlibrary.net did not even care to give new call numbers to these documents, they simply used the directory and file name structure of HEL. I've just asked for clarification at HEL. Happy researching, Janos Bogardi / Radix. wrote: http://worldebookfair.com/ http://worldebookfair.com/ http://worldlibrary.net http://worldlibrary.net ... http://worldlibrary.net/Hungarian_Literature.htm This thread:

var s_account="msnportalencartaau"; Print Hungarian Literature Article View On the File menu, click Print to print the information. Hungarian Literature II. 16th to 19th Century The first important period of Hungarian literature began with the great 16th-century Reformation, when the Bible was translated into Hungarian, first in 1540 and again in 1590 by G¡sp¡r K¡rolyi. Outstanding among the poets who flourished during this period were Baron B¡lint Balassa, an imitator of Petrarch's style, who wrote patriotic and religious poems and who is particularly noted for his love poems; Sebastian Tin³di, who wrote historical chronicles in rhymed verse; Mikl³s Zrinyi, author of the volume of verse The Siren of the Adriatic (1651) whose work reveals the influence of the Italian Baroque and particularly of the poet Torquato Tasso; and Istv¡n Gy¶ngy¶si, among whose works are the epics Mur¡nyi Venus (1664) and Cupid³ (1695) in the style of the Latin poet Ovid. Numerous works written in Hungarian during this period deal with law and philology; some are religious polemics. From the 17th century to the beginning of the 19th, the Habsburg rulers attempted to make Hungary part of a great Germanic empire. They encouraged the writing of books in German or Latin and suppressed the use of Hungarian. During the late 18th century the Hungarians, influenced by nationalism and the European Enlightenment, rebelled against the political and literary policy of the Habsburgs. The period was marked by the formation of societies for the cultivation of the Hungarian language, the founding of a number of publications, among them the first newspaper in Hungarian, and experimentation with poetic language.

Please note that there may be some price differences between Blackwell Online and our Retail Shops The main object of the author, himself a Hungarian, has been to impress the reader with a vivid picture of the chief currents and the leading personalities of Hungarian literature. Magyar literature is too vast a topic to be fully treated within the very limited space of a small essay like the present. By introducing the comparative method of historical investigation and analysis, by means of which Hungarian works are measured, contrasted to, or compared with works of English, French, German, Italian or the ancient classical writers, the reader may obtain, it is hoped, a more life-like idea of a literature hitherto unknown to him. There are chapters on the nature of the Hungarian language, on the writers of the Middle Ages, 18th and 19th century. Originally published in 1898.

Hungarian Literature III. 20th Century The development of Hungarian literature during the 20th century was greatly influenced by the literary review Nyugat (The West), founded in 1908. Outstanding among the poets of this generation were the political revolutionary Endre Ady, noted for innovative themes and techniques in such works as Blood and Gold (1907); Mih¡ly Babits, also an essayist; and the poet and short-story writer Dezs¶ Kosztol¡nyi. Zsigmond M³ricz, generally considered the greatest Hungarian novelist, is noted for his novels Gold Nugget (1910) and Butterfly (1925), for his historical trilogies Transylvania (1935) and R³zsa S¡ndor (1940), and for his short stories Seven Pence (1909) and Barbarians (1935). The satirical works of the humorist Frigyes Karinthy include Travel Around My Head (1937; trans. 1938). Perhaps the most famous of modern Hungarian writers is the playwright Ferenc Moln¡r, author of Liliom (1909; trans. 1921).
