What are Hurricanes?
Most people associate twisters with tornadoes, but in fact tropical twisters come from hurricanes. Hurricanes are what scientists call "strong Tropical Cyclones". They are formed when large areas of the ocean become heated, and the air pressure over that area drops. This causes thunderstorms and strong surface winds. Cyclones develop over tropical or sub-tropical waters (for example, in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa, or in the Pacific). As they travel long distances gathering energy from the ocean, they are likely to be classified as strong Tropical Cyclones. When the winds of a tropical storm reach 74 mph, then the storm is classified as a hurricane. One of NASA's most important missions is to develop an understanding of the total Earth system and study the effects of natural and human- induced changes on the global environment. To achieve these goals, NASA has developed satellites and ground programs which study and monitor hurricanes and other climatic events. ESE Kids Only Home ESE Homepage NASA

Natural Hazards - Hurricanes
Hurricanes bring destructive winds, storm surge, torrential rain, flooding, and tornadoes. A single storm can wreak havoc on coastal and inland communities and on natural areas over thousands of square miles. In 2005, Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma demonstrated the devastation that hurricanes can inflict and the importance of hurricane hazards research and preparedness. More than half of the U.S. population lives within 50 miles of a coast, and this number is increasing. Many of these areas, especially the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, will be in the direct path of future hurricanes. Hawaii is also vulnerable to hurricanes. USGS Hurricane Related News (USGS Newsroom)

Expert Assessments ... NOAA PRESS RELEASE NOAA: 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook Issued: 22 May 2008 Realtime monitoring of tropical Atlantic conditions
Realtime monitoring of tropical East Pacific conditions
The 2008 Atlantic hurricane season outlook is an official product of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center (CPC), and is produced in collaboration with scientists from the NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) and Hurricane Research Division (HRD). Interpretation of NOAA’s Atlantic seasonal hurricane outlook 1. Preparedness
    • This outlook provides the public with a general guide to the expected overall nature of the upcoming hurricane season. It is not a seasonal hurricane landfall forecast, and it does not imply levels of activity for any particular region. Hurricane disasters can occur whether the season is active or quiet. Residents, businesses, and government agencies of coastal and near-coastal regions should prepare for every hurricane season regardless of the seasonal outlook. NOAA, FEMA, the NHC, Small Business Administration, and the Red Cross all provide important hurricane preparedness information on their web sites. It only takes one hurricane (or even a tropical storm) to cause a disaster. This outlook may serve as a guide for large businesses, corporations, financial markets, governments, and industries to better prepare for and manage the potentially significant risk posed by hurricanes.

    KEY DEVELOPMENTS
    • On September 8 and 9, USAID/OFDA delivered emergency relief supplies to Puerto Cabezas, in the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN) of Nicaragua, via three airlifts, including one by a U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) C-130 cargo plane. USAID/OFDA coordinated the distribution of relief supplies with local authorities, DOD officials, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), Catholic Relief Services (CRS), and the Nicaraguan Red Cross (NRC). The relief supplies, which included 580 rolls of plastic sheeting, 875 blankets, and 480 hygiene kits, have been distributed in 11 municipalities in RAAN. The relief supplies also included 1,000 tenliter water containers, which U.S. military personnel delivered filled with water to four municipalities in RAAN, and 100 body bags, which were delivered to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The USAID/OFDA emergency relief commodities are valued at $296,714, including transport.
    • DOD continues to provide air support in Puerto Cabezas to transport emergency relief supplies and humanitarian staff to affected areas. As of September 12, two helicopters and ground staff continue to support a multi-national airlift in RAAN.

    75. How To Make A Pat O'Brien's Hurricane
Pat O Briens is the ultimate place to have fun in New Orleans, Cancun or Orlando. Home of the world famous Hurricane.
    http://www.patobriens.com/hurricane.html
The Original Pat O'Brien's Hurricane A visit to Pat O'Brien's is not complete without a world-famous Hurricane! How do you make a Hurricane? Served in a Pat O'Brien's logo glass and garnished with an orange slice and a cherry, the fruity red concoction was created during World War II when liquor such as whiskey was in low supply. In order to purchase just one case of these liquors, liquor salesmen forced bar owners to purchase as much as 50 cases of rum, which was plentiful. In an effort to use the abundance of rum that Pat O'Brien's acquired, the recipe for the Hurricane evolved with the help of an eager liquor salesman. The name came soon after when a glass shaped like a hurricane lamp was used to serve the fruity rum cocktail. The Pat O'Brien's Hurricane glass is one of the most sought-after souvenirs in New Orleans. Many New Orleanians have one or more in their possession, and as for what they do with those glasses once they get home, one Pat O'Brien's patron pointed out, "A Pat O's Hurricane glass can hold exactly $10.00 in pennies." Excerpted from article written by Jennifer Lange, December 1995.

Harder A hurricane is a powerful, spiraling storm that begins over a warm sea, near the equator. When a hurricane hits land, it can do great damage
    http://42explore.com/hurricane.htm
    The Topic:
Hurricane Easier - A hurricane is a very powerful, sometimes violent storm with strong winds and heavy rains. Harder - A hurricane is a powerful, spiraling storm that begins over a warm sea, near the equator. When a hurricane hits land, it can do great damage through its fierce winds, torrential rains, inland flooding, and huge waves crashing ashore. A powerful hurricane can kill more people and destroy more property than any other natural disaster. Hurricanes are given a different label, depending on where they occur. If they begin over the North Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, or the Northeast Pacific Ocean, they are called hurricanes. Like storms that occur in the Northwest Pacific Ocean west of the imaginary International Date Line are called typhoons. Near Australia and in the Indian Ocean, they are referred to as tropical cyclones.
