In the mist of most countries going tits up Iceland has quietly become one of the leading economies in the world and this has been done without almost anybody noticing. The beginning Discovered by the vikings back in the middle ages Iceland has been quite happy to be ruled, first by the Njordics and then by the Danes. The two first real influential people of Iceland were a Norwegian viking called "Eric the Red", who its understood got this name through either his red beard or his bad temper. The latter sounds more appropriate me thinks because apparently old Eric had to flee Iceland because he chopped a couple of people up and ended up discovering Greenland whilst on the run! The guy was Chopper Eric's son Leif Ericson. Old Leify followed in his angry Dad's footsteps by travelling to the West and become the first European to discover North America (Newfoundland). Unfortunately he couldn't get settled over there because his crew were lacking in the muscle department and were shoe'd off by natives.
