NOME, Alaska - Lance Mackey couldn’t shake four-time champion Jeff King and his faster team. So Mackey pulled off a stunt at the Elim checkpoint — 123 miles from the Nome finish line — that proved to be the turning point en route to winning his second consecutive Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Wednesday. Mackey arrived at the Elim check point Tuesday three minutes ahead of his rival, drank coffee and made a show of settling in for a nap. He told checkpoint volunteers to wake him in an hour and — with King snoring — sneaked out of the checkpoint 70 minutes ahead his opponent. “I just beat the best musher in the world,” the 37-year-old throat cancer survivor said after he crossed the finish line under Nome’s burled arch. Fans mobbed Mackey along the final 10 blocks, whooping and cheering and slapping his hand while chanting his name.

Check out the Gallery for pictures from this years race as well as photos from previous races. The Primary focus of the Web site is designed around the activities of the 28 volunteer pilots who fly for the IAF and the 6 load coordinators. However, we do our best to share stories and pictures from the many other volunteers that are involved in making the Last Great Race a reality.
The IAF provides flying support of the Last Great Race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. This years 1112 miles of race route through Alaska promises to hold much excitement, not only for the 97 mushing teams, but for all the race volunteers as well. This is what brings us back year after year Our 29 volunteer pilots collectively bring 731 years and 365,000 hours of flying experience to the table. These credentials speak highly of a dedicated group of pilots that are about to make a lot of things happen. Move over 537 dropped and scratched dogs back to Anchorage or one of the hubs.

PROJECT BACKGROUND ... THE PAST National Trails Day - June 7, 2008 National Trails Day is a celebration of trails that evolved from the report of President Ronald Reagan's President's Commission on Americans Outdoors. In 1987, the report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes, be on trails that wind through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing steps. The recommendation, dubbed Trails for All Americans, Read more about the National Trails at the American Hiking Society web site...

Lance Mackey of Kasilof, Alaska Wins
Lance Mackey won the 35th annual Iditarod, checking in to Nome on Wednesday, March 13th, 2007 in an elapsed time of 9 Days, 5 Hours, 8 Minutes, 41 Seconds with 9 dogs in the team. Congratulations Lance!
The Iditarod: Commemorating the 1925 Emergency Delivery of Diphtheria Serum to Nome, Alaska
The Iditarod is run each year to commemorate the emergency delivery in 1925 of diphtheria antitoxin to Nome, Alaska. Nome in 1925 had changed from a booming, boisterous turn-of-the-century gold-rush camp into a small, quite town of about 1,500 people. It was fifteen years since the end of the gold-rush, but Nome remained an important settlement on the Seward Peninsula.
Nome, Alaska in 1925
Dr. Curtis Welch
The First Signs of an Epidemic
It was a normal mid-January afternoon in Nome. Doctor Curtis Welch, physician and director of the US Public Health Service, was doing paperwork in his office at the Merchants and Miners Bank of Alaska building. An Eskimo man came into the office asking the doctor to come quickly, his two children were very sick. Dr. Welch raced to the Sand Spit Eskimo settlement, west of the Snake River on the fringes of Nome.
The children's temperatures were dangerously high, and their breathing was labored and shallow. Dr. Welch asked the mother how the children had become ill and what their symptoms had been. She replied that they had been sick for about three days. She thought it was a bad cold because their throats had become red and sore. Dr. Welch tried to examine their throats, but they could not open their mouths far enough for him to do so. He tried to comfort the mother and then returned to his office.

The Iditarod becomes a natural extension to my " Around the world in 36 Weeks " unit.  I begin the two - three week unit with an overview of the history of the Klondike Gold Rush. I read excerpts from books and show pictures taken from the internet.  I found it interesting that large dogs were often stolen and sold to goldseekers to carry loads and show them Jack London's book The Call of the Wild. I made up a maze which uses some of the areas in the Klondike trail and some of the difficulties which were presented. You may wish to have the students make up their own board game which can incorporate some of the hurdles faced by the thousands who joined "the rush". One site with easy to navigate pictures and accompanying sentences is Writing Den: The Klondike. Another site with plenty of interesting information is The Klondike Gold Rush.

Iditarod
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, usually called the "Iditarod" and known as the "Last Great Race", is an annual dog sled race in Alaska, where mushers and teams of dogs cover more than 1,000 miles (1,600 km) in less than two weeks, frequently through blizzards causing whiteout conditions, and sub-zero weather and gale-force winds which can cause the wind chill to reach -100º F (-75º C). The trail runs through the U.S. state of Alaska, from the city of Anchorage in the southeast, up the Rainy Pass of the Alaska Range into the sparsely populated Interior, and then along the shore of the Bering Sea, finally reaching Nome in the northwest. The teams cross a harsh but starkly beautiful landscape under the canopy of the Northern Lights, through tundra and spruce forests, over hills and mountain passes, and across rivers. While the start in Anchorage is in the middle of a large urban center, most of the route passes through widely-separated towns and villages, and small Athapaskan and Inuit settlements. The Iditarod is regarded as a symbolic link to the early history of the state, and has many traditions commemorating the legacy of dog mushing, most famously the diphtheria serum run of 1925 which saved the children of Nome from the "black death". The race is also associated with the spirit of "America's Last Frontier", including the traits of perseverance, testing one's own limits, and an adventuresome spirit.
