Women, Islam, and Hijab A mong Muslim women, the debate about hijab takes many forms. Many believe that the veil is a way to secure personal liberty in a world that objectifies women. Several women have argued that hijab allows them freedom of movement and control of their bodies. Understood in such terms, hijab protects women from the male gaze and allows them to become autonomous subjects. Others have argued that the veil only provides the illusion of protection and serves to absolve men of the responsibility for controlling their behavior" (from "Women, Islam, and Hijab"

Holi
Holi is a festival of colors celebrated in spring in Northern parts of India. There are many legends concerning the orgin of this festival. One of the popular one is related to Prahalad, the god-fearing son of a wicked demon king Hiran Kashyap. Prahalad infuriated his father by praying to Lord Vishnu who was considered an enemy by Hiran Kashap. Hiran Kashap made several attempts to stop his son from worshipping Lords Vishnu. When all his attempts failed, Kashap tried to kill his son. Lord Vishnu saved Prahaad each time. Finally, the king ordered his sister Holika, to kill his son. Holika, who was immune to fire, captured Prahlad and entered a fire to kill the prince. However, Prahalad was saved by the god and Holika was burnt to ashes. The good triumphed over evil. Today

Home Contact us Embassy Holidays Photo gallery ... Right to information Cultural Indian culture enjoys considerable popularity in Bulgaria. In modern times, right from the days of Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to Bulgaria in 1926, the Indian culture has been well received which is evident by the popularity of not only the Indian classics like Ramayana, Mahabharata, Vedas, Upanishadas, Bhagvat Gita and Panchatantra but also such well-known modern Indian authors like Prem Chand, Mulk Raj Anand and Amrita Pritam. Some of the eminent Bulgarian poets like Hristo Botev, Hristo Smyrensky and Nikola Vaptsorar have also been widely translated to Indian languages. All these have contributed to the better understanding of each other’s culture and philosophy. Indo-Bulgarian cultural relations have been given an institutional framework by a Cultural Agreement, which was signed in 1963. Since then our cultural interactions have continued under the framework of biennial or triennial Cultural Exchange Programmes. So far, we have signed 14 CEPs and the last one was signed in September 2001. The last CEP signed for 2001-2003 has been extended to 2004 or till such time as new CEP is signed between the two sides. In Bulgaria, there are sizeable numbers of Bulgarians who are extremely close and friendly towards India. There are several institutions/organizations connected with India who are involved in promoting Indian culture, Indian music and dance, Ayurveda, Yoga etc. These are the two Friendship Societies namely ‘Friends of India Club” and East-West Indological Foundation’; Indology Department in Sofia University and two schools named after our former Prime Minister Late Smt. Indira Gandhi – Indira Gandhi High School in Sofia and Indira Gandhi Kindergarten in Pravetz. There are about 1200 students in Indira Gandhi High School where Hindi is also taught to students from Grade IX-XII. The Mission maintains close contacts with these institutions/organizations and organizes various activities with their support like the World Hindi Day which is being celebrated since 2006.

http://www.k12academics.com/india_culture.htm
Home Study Abroad India India has a rich and unique cultural heritage, and has managed to preserve its established traditions throughout history whilst absorbing customs, traditions and ideas from both invaders and immigrants. Many cultural practices, languages, customs and monuments are examples of this co-mingling over centuries. Famous monuments, such as the Taj Mahal and other examples of Islamic-inspired architecture have been inherited from the Mughal dynasty. These are the result of a syncretic tradition that combined elements from all parts of the country. Indian music is represented in a wide variety of forms. The two main forms of classical music are Carnatic from South India, and Hindustani from North India. Popular forms of music also prevail, the most notable being Filmi music. In addition to this are the diverse traditions of folk music from different parts of the country. Many classical dance forms exist, including the Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Kathak, Kuchipudi, and Manipuri. They often have a narrative form and are usually infused with devotional and spiritual elements. The earliest literary traditions in India were mostly oral, and were later transcribed. Most of these are represented by sacred works like the Vedas and the epics of the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Sangam literature from Tamil Nadu represents some of India's oldest traditions. There have been many notable modern Indian writers, both in Indian languages and in English. India's only Nobel laureate in literature was the Bengali writer Rabindranath Tagore. India is the third largest newspaper market in Asia with an estimated circulation of at least 66 million copies daily in 2003.

A PORTRAIT OF INDIA
The Delhi , Agra and Jaipur region lies at the geographical heart of North India . Its strategic location along the north-south and east-west routes has given it a focal position in Indian history and many great empires have been ruled from here. What we see today is a dynamic blend of the old and the new, a proudly traditional social structure within a modern liberalized economy. This landlocked region is enclosed by mountains to the north, the desert and the forested Aravallis to the west. To the east are the agriculturally rich riverine plains, with vast fields of sugarcane, wheat, mustard and lentils. Southwards, these flat plains dramatically metamorphose into the earth pillars of the Chambal ravines, a rugged landscape once inhabited by fierce bandits. Invaders, entering the subcontinent from the mountain passes of the northwestern frontiers, conquered this region centuries earlier and made it their home. The Legacy of the Past The earliest civilization in this region was the Harappan culture in the second millennium BC. However, it was the Aryan settlements in the next millennium that provided the region with its philosophical moorings, epic literature, such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and its early Hindu kingdoms. In the first and second centuries, the area was the center of a Buddhist empire when the Kushana emperors who ruled from Taxila (now in Pakistan ) made Mathura their second capital. After the decline of the great Hindu and Buddhist empires, powerful Rajput rulers seized control of parts of North India . Many of the magnificent forts from which their feudal kingdoms were ruled can still be seen today.

Kerala also follows this system to some extent, in that its female members control the decision making process in a family.Slowly with westernization nuclear families are introduced.
