Culture. India is a secular country, which has traditionally absorbed and given birth to a variety of religions and religious sects.
    http://www.salestraining.de/sov2/culture/india_culture.htm
Culture India is a secular country, which has traditionally absorbed and given birth to a variety of religions and religious sects. The majority of present-day Indians are Hindu, however, and this is reflected in many aspects of the shared culture across the country. Hinduism itself has, over centuries, absorbed and evolved a number of different philosophies and approaches, from the philosophical Advaita of Shankara to the devotion of the Bhakti movement. The coexistence of significant minority faiths with the majority faith of Hinduism has by no means always been peaceable; Hindu-Muslim and Hindu-Sikh tensions (often fanned by motives other than religious ones) have, in the past, resulted in many deaths. The Ramajanmabhoomi movement, whose demands to build a Hindu temple on what they claim to be the birthplace of Rama in Ayodhya resulted in the destruction by a mob of the Babri Masjid (a mosque which they declared to have been built after the destruction of a previous temple) in 1992, has clearly been able to generate considerable popular support. Such developments pose a serious threat to the future of secularism in India. It could be argued that this recent so-called Hindu "fundamentalism" (a contradiction in terms, as Hinduism has no defined fundaments) is an effort to forge a singular national culture on religious lines from rich and diverse traditions. The inculcation of such ideas has been facilitated by the widespread access to television, latterly satellite television, and its powerful cultural messages. The same media have also spread another value-set which to some extent has served to dissipate the call of religion—that of a Western-style consumer society.

    INDIA
    CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
FAMILY The family is the primary focus for the average Indian employee. All other tasks in a routine day are tied to the family somehow. Whether providing food, or perhaps just a small gift, an Indian worker's life revolves around his or her family. Family also provides connections for jobs and even aids religion in determining social standing. EDUCATION The educational level of Indians, as seen in the Statistics section of this website, is very low. Not many fields of employment in India are very technical, and those that are highly technical employ very few workers. Those few workers gain the vast majority of the education the Indian government is capable of providing. The rest of the workers of India must make due by learning on the job, or learning from friends or family members. ECONOMY The economy of India is rather poor. Rather than sitting back and waiting for foreign aid, however, the Indian worker goes out and makes a living with what he or she can. When the job market is depressed and jobs are unavailable, the poor usually do favors for the wealthy or influential in the hopes that their religious beliefs of kharma will indeed deliver a return for them. POLITICS The realm of the rich and powerful, politics is limited to a few very elite families. The vast majority of India does not have the benefit of running for political office, no matter what the official form of government may be. To do so without the permission of local politicians is seen as disrespectful, and is usually met with strong reprisals.

India, sixth city of the World, the Paris of the East! and the New York of the West!
India, the most cosmopolitan city in the world, the fishing village on a mudflat which almost literally overnight became a great metropolis.
Inevitable meeting place of world travelers, the habitat of people of forty-eight different nationalities, of the Orient yet Occidental, the city of glamorous night life and throbbing with activity, India offers the full composite allurement of the Far East.
Not a wilderness of temples and chop-sticks, of jade and pajamas, India in reality is an immense and modern city of well-paved streets, skyscrapers, luxurious hotels and clubs, trams, buses and motors, and much electricity.
Less than a century ago India was little more than an anchorage for junks, with a few villages scattered along the low, muddy banks of the river. What it will be a hundred years from now is a test for the imagination. Principal gateway to India, serving a hinterland population of more than 200,000,000, many close observers believe it will become the largest city in the world.
Early History. Although neighbouring cities like Nanking, Soochow, and Hangchow figure spaciously in the chronicles of ancient India, India is very rarely mentioned. It undoubtedly formed part of the Kingdom of Wu (B.C. 513), a great feudal state that embraced the modern province of Kiangsu, in which India is situated, but the connection is not recorded. The earliest reference to what is now India is placed at approximately B.C. 200, when it was called "liu-tuh" and known as a fishing station. From that remote date until A.D. 1280, when it acquired the name of India ("Above the Sea"), there is a marked hiatus in the historical record.

Alliance For Security - What do we know about Shi'ism? Shi'ahs are regarded as Muslims , for they accept the same guiding principles of faith, which are the belief in Muhammad as the Messenger of God, in the Qur’an as the most sacred religious text and in the five pillars of faith. Shi’ah hold as sacred the martyrdom of Ali and Husayn; Shi'ahs revere “the five holy ones” as the Prophet Muhammad , his daughter F¡tima al-Zahra, the Prophet’s son-in-law Al, and the Prophet’s grandchildren Hasan and Husayn; http://www.allianceforsecurity.org/shiah
    Untitled
The Shi'ah account of the nomination of ' Ali by the Prophet Muhammad , pbuh, to be his successor. Many of the Shi'ahs have carried their veneration for ' Ali so far as to raise him to the position of a divine person, and most of the sects make their Imams partakers of the divine nature. (2) The Shi'ahs have a profound veneration for the Khalifah ' Ali , and some of their sects regard him as an incarnation of divinity, whilst they all assert that next to the Prophet, ' Ali is the most perfect and excellent of men.

FAQs Espa±ol Fran§ais Dutch Italiano Portuguªs German Culture of India It has been said that India is less a country than a continent, and it holds as many variations in religion, language, customs, art and cuisine as it does in topography. For the traveller, this cultural feast is India's great strength. Indian art is basically religious in its themes and developments, and its appreciation requires at least some background knowledge of the country's faiths. The highlights include classical Indian dance, Hindu temple architecture and sculpture (where one begins and the other ends is often hard to define), the military and urban architecture of the Mughals, miniature painting, and mesmeric Indian music. Of course, India's creativity continues to thrive, its most lively contemporary expression being filmi culture. The latter is difficult for Western ears to immediately appreciate, but it doesn't take long to get a feel for it. Clothes in India
Light cotton clothes are useful almost anywhere in India at any time of year. It is a good idea to have some very lightweight long sleeve cotton and trousers for evenings, preferable light in colour, as they also give some protection against mosquitoes. Between Dec - Feb it can be cool at night even on the plains in N and E India, and at altitudes above 1,500m right across India some woolens are essential. Dress is rarely formal. In the large cities short sleeve shirt and ties are often worn for business. For traveling loose clothes are most comfortable.
